portrait keyboard

Hi,

Who can make a new portrait keyboard for maemo?
I have heard about Fastsmsevo, but its more a new text message app than just a basic keyboard.
the idea is to make something like Iphone, Opera browser 11 keyboard:

and:

Thanks!

Graag gedaan!

Like the option of showing a layer when pressing a key. This makes it clear which button is pressed . . . just like the opera keyboard.

If you install CSSU (maemo community update) the use CSSU Features configuration and enable force rotation.. This will let you use qwert on screen keyboard in portraid mode.
Try it and post results.

I use fastsmsevo because there's no alternative, but it's far from perfect. Besides being incredibly slow (yes it is much faster after the initial load but still frustratingly slow), the UI isn't good on it and it's caused a bug so when typing a number in the phone app itself it's invisble unless you tap in the box.
I'd love a decent UI portrait keyboard

likewise but also when using fastsms in conversations words become invisible. a fatal flaw. was ok on last cssu but on newest just bad...

Seriously, guys! Use the search function!

This has been talked to death and it is NOT going to happen, at least not anytime soon.

FastSMSEvo works and u can force rotate the standard QWERTY which is just about usable. The stock keyboard is CLOSED source meaning no portrait support can be added.

Also why not go and see if you can contribute towards FastSMSEvo with UI ideas ect. Instead of making a new thread on something that has already been discussed numerous times!

I think everyone knows about Fastsmsevo, as can be seen by the replies. But look through that thread and you'll see the reasons why it's slow and with its poor UI and that those are unlikely to change. So, for people who don't want fastsmsevo, this is a worthwhile thread.

The stock keyboard is closed, but fastsmsevo and 'portrait keyboard' in devels both overwrite it, so there's no reason this can't be done at all.

The developers of the 'portrait keyboard' were some of the better programmers that programmed for the N900. They couldn't make any real progess with this and NOBODY else has picked it up. Meaning nobody has time or can really be bothered to spend their time learning to program something that won't really help them in the future.

Also its not really a worthwhile thread as so far all people have done is ask for things. Maemo was killed by Nokia meaning people arent gonna willingly jump to develop for it. So if you want something done why dont you guys pick up the source code from Gitorious and then fix this keyboard urself??

They dont overwrite it they simply disable it and then change what opens when the particular DBUS message occurs.

Re: portrait keyboard

I wouldn't totally say that this feature must be forgotten, because the CSSU is changing a lot of things first deemed unchangeable.

For instance, I believe the open media player will force itself as default player (and uninstall stock media player?) by some somehow disallowing the closed source app to open, and open the open-s one instead? This is at least how I understood the explanation on how the Open media plyer will install.

So what if the same was made to the closed-s keyboard?

I'm no coder so I'm just talking out of my a** here probably.

Well the base is there. It just needs to be studied and then heavily modified in order to be at all functional..

Something that even if 2 or 3 people took on, it would take them months to even make a small amount of progress :(
