Something isn't working here.....
 

Anyone know what would cause an application to shut down before starting? This originally started with PyRadio for pandora, and I thought it was just the app and it being stupid.

Then it hit my Swapolube which was working just fine for a while and since not using it for a while, I decided to run it again to make sure all was well. Now every time I start the app, it loads or says its loading and then it goes back to the home screen. Never even gets me into the App. I tried restarting and restoring but nothing worked.

So I left it alone, until now when I tried installing Call Blocker and PyCallBlock. Both apps did the same thing, they would load but never start.

What is going on here guys!

run from terminal and see if you are getting segmentation faults, then your file system might be corrupt. Just reboot your comp or do a force check of filesystem using bootmenu and it should work.

try to run any app through xterm to know whats wrong, e.g : /opt/pyRadio/pyRadio.py
or any other app depending on where its installed

And how does one do that haha. I have only been able to navigate through Xterminal with the instructions of members

Sudo Gainroot, than what? Do I just punch in the line you wrote with spaces and all?

example: /opt/Nokia N900/Swapulobe.py

in the example i gave you above you don't have to type (sudo gainroot)
just type :
/opt/pyRadio/pyRadio.py
the app won't run as you said but xterm will give you a record-like log where you will be able to know whats going on, just copy the results and paste here

/opt/PyCallBlocker/PyCallBlocker.py: not found

not sure what folder it is in exactly and maybe I need to find it first, but I can't view the folder through the normal file explorer.

Or I can try Resetting all of my settings but I would want to refrain from doing a complete flash unless it is necessary. I feel like some of the old power kernals that aren't even running anymore are effecting my phone.

Ok now this is pissing me off. The one game I play while in the bathroom(findmine) isn't working either. I can click it, and it will go to a blank screen with Findmine Loading on the above bar, and then it all goes away and back to the main screen.

Do I have to do a reflash(and I am not that confident in doing it without messing it up) or is there something else I can do first?

I will flash if I have to so if that is the only option than so be it.

Resetting settings won't help with missing files. I vote for reflash.

Don't worry, many of us did it tens of times. Go to the wiki, follow each step and you're golden. You can't brick the n900 permanently. At the very worse, you'll be phone-less for a few hours.

Make a backup, and do a full reflash. I'm thinking bad /opt.

Woah there nelly. Before you reflash, wind it back a few steps and do what was first suggested. If you need to go deeper into the File system than the basic File Manager allows, download FileBox which will let you explore your system in depth. Once you have found the programs you want to run, then follow Agog's advice.

"sudo gainroot" makes you root. Think of root as "Administrator", if that helps. You don't want that here.

You're diagnosing why applications won't run properly for you, "user". You want to run the applications from the command line as user, not root, so you're properly replicating running those applications by tapping their icons. You're only using the command line in order to see any error messages the applications may generate as they try to launch. Other than that, you want to keep the situation the same, so the solution you reach will fix launching the applications from icons.

If you run the applications as root, you're changing too many variables in the experiment at once. Not only does root have unlimited access to every part of the system (unlike user), there's a chance your applications will use entirely different sets of configuration files when run as root. Root and user have different default directories for storing files. So, error messages you would see when running applications from the command line as root may not match the errors that are occurring when you attempt to launch the same applications from icons.

In short, save "sudo gainroot" for when you absolutely need it.

He did, 2 posts above, he's missing files (this is what I understood).The programs could be reinstalled and they might work, but they never solve the issue that killed the files in the first place.

Better he makes a backup and fixes the system than to have neverending issues and end up on one of those hate threads. It's no big deal and system is guaranteed stock.

haha thanks guys, and NDI I think I will be re-flashing. Is the WiKi up to date with the links? I want to update it properly and not have to do anything more or less.


Also, what should I backup, the normal stuff with the backup utility(contacts, messages, calendar, etc) or is there something else I should backup further?

Thanks for the replies guys. And no hate thread from me, if my N900 breaks in half for any reason, Or if the firmware melts down the god damn phone I will still look to buy another one!

Too much backing up and you restore it to a nonwworking state :P

I'd go with sms and contacts only. I usually like to redo settings myself. Also, a lot of ballast is lost if you manually reinstall apps instead of restoring all. I'm too much of a pack rat to uninstall, but too lazy to install trivial stuff, so I end up with a slimmer phone each time.

Ok I went through the steps of flashing the phone, and I completed the first step(firmware) and went on to the second step(emmc). Instead, the phone never gets recognized and all I get stuck with is "Suitable USB device not found, waiting."

I can flash the firmware just fine(USA) but then when I go to flash the EMMC it just hangs up on the Waiting.

I am using the LibUSB since I am running windows 7(x86) and cannot figure out why this wont work.

I sounds to me that you had problem with either python or Qt since you mentiond only python programs giving trouble, reinstalling those might have solved the problem or experimenting with different versions, for that you might want to check the thread of the relevant app. It might be too late for you though. :(

All I meant that you might have not needed a flash just to check your Qt and python packages on your device, but if you already flashed it's late to stop you from doing so.The binary files part I didn't get either... besides I didn't see anyone mentioning Notepad on this thread before...

haha I thought I was the only one.

I have no idea how to check Qt or the Py packages and if it isn't something I can do with instructions, than I couldn't do it.

But flashing was simple enough for me until this happened, and now I have a stock N900 full of files and such. None of the apps I had are installed but I can always guess that it would still be corrupted?

If the problem still presist, you should check the thread of the application in question, maybe someone else had the same issue. I had simmillar issue with Ansela after flashing to 1.3 global, rolling back to previous version of Qt have however solved the problem. I think there is solution for this on both pyradio and ansela thread. I'm sorry I'm too lazy to look it up now ;)

Not a problem, I'll download the apps later tonight after class and see how it flows, but the issue was that it affected more than just one app. It was like a domino affect, one after the other but not over the same period of time.

Here is the code for the solution if it's Qt related:
apt-get install python2.5-qt4-common=4.7.4-maemo0 python2.5-sip4=4.10.5-maemo0

Edit: This should downgrade the version which should result in solving any incompatibility issues.

ran the code, no go. It removed all of my previous python apps and installed the version to downgrade it. Then I proceeded to download PyCallblocker(since the script had removed it for me) and same **** happened.

It will go to the black screen with "PyCallBlocker" on top and the loading sign, and then it all closes and goes back to the home screen.

Did you try XP Mode, or VMWare player? I do that' I'm on W7x64. Or a friend with a computer.

I'm on windows 7 X86 not 64, I was told running it in windows XP mode is not compatible. I flashed the firmware yea, but that's all I did according to the wiki,

All my friends are mac fools or have upgraded to windows 7. I am in Ann Arbor for school so I can't ask my friends from ohio.

XP mode is not restricted to x64. It can't EMULATE x64, so the guest is restricted to 32 bit. The hardware virtualization support has been lifted as a requirement in 2010, so all you needs is W7 Pro or better (here and here get it here).

It's like VMWare, with way fewer buttons. Painless to set up, but with fewer things to go wrong. Install, get flasher in the XP window, then after you connect the N900 by holding "U", go to USB > Attach.

I've tweaked the instructions in the wiki myself, you can't go wrong. ;)

I should have read further, Virtual PC mode is fine for W7, but you need Pro to run XP mode and I don't have Pro. Also, I don't feel like downloading a new copy and running it just for this feature.

So I will just assume that everything I downloaded(virtual pc/xp mode) is useless unless I have pro?

And what Wiki did you say you tweaked, the Maemo wiki or the Flashing Wiki? Thanks for the help either way mate!

Yes, you need pro or better. Get VMWare, that has no requirement. VMWare isn't free, but the player is and you can get that free.

XP in a window is cool to have for a miriad of reasons, not only flashing. VMWare player is small and last I checked it ran MS VP files. It won't let you edit the specs, but it's not much of a problem.

This all unfortunate, this would have been simpler if flasher would work with 7.

In your place, I'd get VMWare.

Ok so get the Free VMware player? and then what should I do, proceed to flash as if I were using the xp mode? I'll do all of this tonight as soon as I get home.

Hi Goliath, sry that the code didn't work I was quite sure that was the problem. If you wish to revert it back:

apt-get install python2.5-qt4-common python2.5-sip4

About the problem you are having with W7... Why not try to install WUBI? http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer

You install/uninstall it like any other windows app. Easy, simple and free. You just need some bandwidth... Or you could dl any live cd from an other distro if you wish.

Google VMWare and go to downloads for Player.

Once installed, mount an XP kit you get from ... wherever and install as from a CD. Else, you can import the XP mode HDD image you got from Microsoft, but I never did this myself.

There are tons of XP images, bare or full, over the net. Just start them up and use them like normal XP. Flash normally.

If you are already doing some nasty things with your device:

What would happen if you:
1. Install Leafpad
2.Run commands
and change first line from
to and repeat the process for /opt/pycallblocker/callblocker-daemon.py:
and replace the first line to the same as previously.
3. Try to run pycallblocker normally?

If it's the case of using python instead of python2.5 in scripts' code, a massive facepalm tsunami is expected :P

ok ok sorry guys but too late, got it installed finally.

My buddy brought me his notebook and asked me to reformat it and install a new* copy of windows. So I figured why not give him the Ultimate and while at it, flash my phone.

Everything went better than expected and now I have a fresh new phone and all my goodies work just fine, including PYCallBlocker!


Thank you guys for all the help but sorry I couldn't get this figured out for anyone else if they get the same issue. It was much easier to do as recommended and just get a pc with the proper operating system!

Glad to hear it worked out.

Also, it's a bit late, but for 7, Ultimate is kind of a waste of money, all the features there are corporate in nature. Pro has all the features anyone needs for a significant cut in price. Unless, you know, you have a use for bitlocker. ;)

no Idea what a Bitlocker is, but this college kid knows that the way he got it will mean ANY version is good enough lol

but I will keep that in mind when I go to reformat my PC. Should I not use the Ultimate for my wifes netbook? She is running Vista and I HATE it!
