[ANNOUNCE] FourCircle: A FourSquare client for Maemo
 

Hello,
The first version of my FourSquare client is in the extras-devel repository.
You can use this install file for easy install.

It is far from feature complete. At this moment you can checkin, and see where your friends are. More features will be implemented over time.

Donations are welcome, since I have already put an huge amount of time in it, and donations will motivate me for more updates (=features).

The problem with Barriosquare is that it works via oauthV1, while FourCircle works with oauthV2.
Oauth v1 will be unsuported on August 1st, 2011. So barriosquare won't work anymore.

Barriosquare is currently unmaintained, and I don't like programming in python. And I think it is a lot of workto migrate from oauth1 to oauth2.

It's pretty nice, but far from complete. What I'd really like to see is the ability to comment on friends's checkins. It's what we've been lacking.

And maybe, when functionality is really good, maybe some graphical interface, maybe some foursquare colors etc.

Don't get me wrong, it's a start !! And since I announced the API expire date (barriosquare's death) I'm glad someone is developing a new one !

Wow, I'm glad these will come in the future !

What I really like about this app is it's speed: it's FAST everywhere! BarrioSquare is so damn SLOW. Slow when you load it up, slow when you search, slow when you check it.

Anyway, keep up the good work !

That was one of the reasons to start a new project.
I'm not completely satisfied, some screen are still to slow (like the venue details), but I will improve that.

wow! I just went to repository yesterday and saw FourCircle. Happens to be the day it was released =D
I liked it! Better than BarriSquare, but I couldn't find a place to add value. This would make this app perfect.

Nice Work! I don't know if it's possible, but for me the greatest feature of FourSquare is the Specials Listing (Like the iPhone App) "See 30 Specials Near You"
Right Now I'm making my first donation and will make a bigger (as promised) one when the app becomes ready.

Nice work on this client!

Is it possible to reduce the amount of venues loaded as well as information per venue in order to reduce data wait times? I suspect loading the current mayor display picture is what the largest chunk is, since the rest is simply text to be parsed.

I suspect those images are not very heavy anyways. Probably 2-3 KB per image which is not that much. We also have to take in consideration server loads etc. Most FourSquare apps take 2-3 seconds to display a venue.

The amount of venues displayed when searching is currently static, but I can make that configurable if there are more people who want that.

I will look into loading additional venue (like mayor information and such) info in the background when selecting an venue, this will make the 'feel' of the app faster.

I will also look into the issue with character decoding. I have no venues at my home with non-alfabetic character, so I have never noticed it ;)

Im using this app right now!

The Pros:
- Its fast
- Its easy/simple
- It has a leaderboard :)
- Portrait mode!

The Cons:
- The looks are a bit dull (still better then Barriosquare imo)
- The "search" button is close to the "back" button (pressed the wrong button couple of times)

Anyways sofar so good and alrdy like it more then Barriosquare!

Okay, so I did some research of FourSquare apps on both the iPhone and Android devices and I've seen some features that can be, more or less easily, implemented.

1. When you search venues, you could maybe add some information about the distances of nearby venues, and their address. I don't use TIPS that much but they could be added in the Venue Search as well. Maybe you could link information. For example, in the venue search, before you check in to a venue, you should be able to click to see information about it's mayor.
2. After you've checked in to a venue, if other friends have checked in, the message with the points information should also say something about checking in with your friends.
3. The comments feature, which I already requested on previous pages and you said is coming with next updates.
4. The Photo Upload feature - the same as no. 3.
5. The ability to add venues, because the community is in a continuous expansion.
6. Maybe you could "look at" designs of the FSquare apps from other platforms and use their design and appearance. The Friends and Nearby buttons at the above, etc. Look at these other apps and see what can be done.

I'll think of more aspects as things evolve. Again, we can't thank you enough for developing this app and hopefully it'll be as successful in the MeeGo App Competition as it is here amongs us, it's users.

as regards @geojoking's list above, The only other thing I can see that is missing is that the message after checkin should also include the information that "you are x days away from being Mayor .

Yet another bug report :)

Attaching a message in Russian with checkin returns question marks instead of letters. Latin letters are ok.
Both messages with question marks are on foursquare & facebook.

Sounds like another character encoding problem.
Did you use version 0.0.1-5?

Got the new version and thanks for replacing the "search button"!
I also saw the icon when I downloaded it but it doesn't show up when installed even after a reboot!

Anybody else who got this issue?!

Wow, I just LOVE this app!

I'm a big FourSquare junkie and I was starting to really feel like the N900 was going to limit/eliminate my FS options. BarrioSquare (as pretty as it is) is laggy and requires constant manually refresh commands. Cotchin is a web service that can go away at any moment.

But FourCircle is great! It's fast, simple, fast, easy, and Fast!!!

Even modified the .desktop file to point to an standard FourSquare app icon to bring the feel of finally having a great FourSquare app on my N900!

Great job, man

Your application works perfectly.

With the upgrade, the characters like à, á work very well.

The only problem I had was that the application's icon does not appear.

Any suggestions how to solve this problem?

The icon is commented out in the .desktop file. I also grabbed a "stock" Foursquare icon and stuck it into my theme's "app" folder.

New version available in extras-devel, with the following changes:

The ability to add venues, because the community is in a continuous expansion.
Added the suggestion from br1zer; about the notification how many days before you become mayor.
Fixed some minor issues.

Adding of venues can be done by searching for venues, and selecting the last entry in the results ("Add venue"). I will add an icon or something to make clearer this is not an normal venue.

I've just updated to this last version! Awesome! The back button on bottom is much better, and also the "add value" option. Great! But I think is missing the categories on the "add value". This is very important, because each diferent category gives you extra points!

You can add tips to venues now, and the image and extra info of the mayor of a venue is now loaded in the background.

This bug is fixed now.

Last little bug is 'Seach venue' on main screen should be 'Search venue'. All other things seem to work :)
