Do you have to have 'advanced power kernal' for OC'ing?
 

I went to this site " http://theunlockr.com/2010/04/05/how...ur-nokia-n900/ " which many people used to overclock but they dont say anything about the advanced power kernal so im wondering do i even need it for overclocking my N900?

Plus has anyone used this way of overclocking?, reason why i ask is becuz this site posted this well over a year ago and will it work if im using PR 1.3?

You cannot overclock with the stock kernel. You need any one of the power kernels but I strongly recommend you use the latest v47 power kernel from Pali - see his thread.

I strongly recommend you DONT use version 47 from DEVELOPMENT repositories.

Just get good 'ol regular power kernel version 42 from maemo extras repository and you can overclock away.

Read this, it is probably one of the better guides to OC, ignore stuff from off site.

You may also wish to check out this thread..http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=63208 I use this along with qcpufreq (extras repository) so I can switch on the fly as I don't always keep mine oc..

The overclocking from that third-party site should work, but it is worse than using the power kernel.

I find version 47of the power kernel from the DEVELOPMENT repository perfectly reliable, but you can avoid it if you wish.

because devel repository is not for everyone. You should understand the risks of using that repository, you can mess up your phone if you don't know what you are doing and blindly following advice from others who may not have all the info they need to give the advice correctly.

In summary, if you are a noob, stay clear. Then again, if you are a noob, you probably shouldn't be overclocking in the first place...

That certainly is true.
But what I meant was that I haven't experienced any (real) problems so far with the .47 kernel, and I think that the average user wont either. As long as he doesn't go and mess with the scripts manually and just uses the Qcpu (or alike) programs to boost his processor speed a bit (up to 805MHz or so) he should be quite save. And if he messes up the kernel he can always reflash his device, there plenty of simple documentation on that. Or am I seeing this wrong? :)

Serious problems with using programs in devel are rare, and hysterical warnings about using them are common, I find.

Knowing how to flash should be something every N900 user has in his bag of tricks.
