Could Symbian OS be ported to n800? What would the effects be?
From the past I have had experience with the Symbian OS and I found it to be a much more fulfilling operating system than the n800 OS 2007, is there any way to port over Symbian and if so, how would that effect it's functionality, I am suspecting that this would make a mean n800 if possible?

Re: Could Symbian OS be ported to n800? What would the effects be?
You are probably correct about a more fulfilling user experiance, but I suspect that the majority of people on this site will say that the benefit of the n800 is the linux based o/s because it is "open source" and can be developed.
After some time on the market since the release of the 770, there really are not many apps that a novice can easily install and use (IMHO). Granted I have a pda and business application orientation (palm o/s and windows mobile devices), which is not what the n800 was made for, but the n800 is a computer that COULD do a heck of a lot more than the present software permits so I would prefer any o/s to the one on the n800. The DOS on my HP200LX pretty much let me do more on that device than I can do today on the n800! |
Re: Could Symbian OS be ported to n800? What would the effects be?
i think... it would be great... if we could have dual boot... .for both symbian and linux.... would please everyone..... and the n800 can be advertised as a common man's internet tablet..... and a good side effect of this is that .... more and more people will try out linux.... ultimately.....

If Nokia did port S60 to the N800. I strongly believe that a lot of people would purchase units.
After all the iphone is a very closed OS and they sold over half a million in 3 days. So the closed OS moaning is hardly worth anything. |
Re: Could Symbian OS be ported to n800? What would the effects be?
Oh course they would have to leave out the phone functionality and replace it with something else. Like skype or Google talk and an IM client.

Re: Could Symbian OS be ported to n800? What would the effects be?
i loved my nokia 7710 with series 90. Although the resolution and screen size were nowhere near to n800. It was the first large screen phone with touch screen. And that was way back in 2004. Now apple sayst that their touch screen phone is path breaking technology!!!! How ignorant can they be??

May I revisit this same question anyone can give a real answer?
|
Re: Could Symbian OS be ported to n800? What would the effects be?
"Could" it be ported? Yes, but only by Nokia and there's absolutely zero chance of them doing that (all of Nokia's Symbian branches are for phones).
So, the answer to your actual question ("Is there any chance of Symbian being ported to the N800?") is a resounding "no". |
Re: Could Symbian OS be ported to n800? What would the effects be?
Hi. I guess your question is "Could the N800 hardware run Symbian OS", right? (That's the only sensible question, really).
Well, N800 runs OMAP processors, as do Symbian phones, and it is a very capable piece of hardware. But as Aflegg already says, Symbian OS is for phones and N800 hardware has no such capability. Plus about the touch screen... The UIQ UI on top of Symbian does support touch screens, but there are no touch screen S60 UI phones currently on the market. So the answer really is no. (And even if the answer would be something else, it would make no sense at all, on so many levels, so no. :) |

Sorry, I read .... as long pauses in sentences. So if you've ever seen someone making fun of Capitan Kirk on the old Star Trek shows, you'd know what I was talking about.

Nokia's version of Symbian (s60v3) doesn't support touchscreen. Why because they are lame like that. None of the s60 applications works with the touchscreen. There is nothing wrong with the current state of Linux on n800, except a decent word processor suite.

and a set of good usb drivers to really take advantage of 3g data connections of course
