Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
Now all it needs is commercial app support! I don't care if it doesn't get supported by Nokia, I just want to have many great apps!

Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
Why buy it when I know that Nokia has abandoned Meego for Windows? When I know that it has no future? Yes I love my N900. For sure N9 will be great but....

Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
This looks great, but let's not pretend it will get any support from Nokia or third party devs. I'd rather wait for a year or so 'till it has a community properly supporting it like the N900 has. It'll be a lot cheaper by then too. Besides, I want to see if it really is the successor to the N900 both in terms of hardware, software and community support.

Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
This just looks too Symbian for me. If this is really Harmattan... I really have a long way to go to accept it.
I thought when Marko Ahtisaari talked about new OS UI paradigms, I thought WP7 was going to be a soul-sister in design language and innovation. Peter Skillman was hired by Nokia and he soon went on to say he hates "Clutter, clutter, clutter.", which S^3 was said to be the prime example of. The leaked UI powerpoint thing however unlikely to be ever implemented played on the dark and cool colours of Maemo5, just took it to the next level. Now it looks like Android. I mean the platform that's version releases are named after pastries. Pastries are cool for overweight engineers that find Stephen King and cardboard partyplates with red, yellow and blue as high art. And its visible in how completely uninteresting the UI on Android is. I thought Nokia's MeeGo was going to start something new or just be very different. Just like the N900. What's happened here? If this is it, then my God, was it dumbed down. Or perhaps my expectations were raised too high, but I think for good reason. Heavens above, imagine someone sees you using this in the street and asks you if its Symbian! Nightmare! :S |

Re: N9 hits FCC???
Paused the video where you see multiple windows open and if you notice the user swipes his hand to the right of the screen and they come up. This reminds me of how microB behaves. So that screen isn't the multi tasking window but perhaps the different browser windows open?
A little disappointed that we couldn't see multi tasking being demonstrated. |
Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
Only thing i can see similar to Symbian are the icons? Or do the icons make the UI? Harmattan UI and Symbian where meant to live together so it's not much of a surprise that the icons are very similar and to some of us who listen certain rumor sources like bible, almost known. ;D
So far looking better than i expected honestly. That multitasking looks perfect imo and that you bring it by swiping from left to right. Just holding my breath for certain specs like HDMI out etc. |

Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
Well icons is the only thing we've seen so I can't really comment on whether icons make the UI in this case.
But like I said, I think I had reason to believe we'd be moving away from widget filled desktops and iconlists of apps. These are not the entire UI, but I do feel it tells us something about the way the UI functions overall. In WP7 they thought of something new in place of this two-part UI (desktop & icon list). I thought this was going to be something radically different. Maybe I just took Ahtisaari too seriously. :F |

While it looks neat and all, I've got my eyes on LG for what they come up with. Unless the n950 has an open bootloader and is generally user replaceable OS friendly. (you know, for upgrades to later meegos which nokia will surely forget once they're sold.) |

Aaaaaargh announce the freakin' device, can't wait anymore!!!

Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
Usually people sneer and guffaw at the size of my N900 'brick'.
Can't wait to see their faces when I slip out this James Bond style N9 and say, "Oh yes...it's the new Nokia." hehehe |

There is also a part where he swipes to the left and it opens gallery. Could be that it's something you can assign or opens last app you visited. Because that would rock. |
Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
I just like being fairly unique, and working with and around a (usually) fantastic, warm, friendly and appreciative community. I wonder if developers for other "ecosystems" could say the same thing?

Maybe it's just the wrong date on the device... Maybe it loses the date&time when you remove the battery :)

Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
Just finished watching the teaser vid, and remembered why they call them teaser vids.. you see something just not very much and definitely not enough. Irritating! I can't really form an opinion to be honest, looking forward to the conference to hear some more :)
The music cuts very abruptly at the end as the singer begins to sing "Jessie's Girl"... just squeaking out the "J.." There must be a longer version (or else the audio might have been added to the video afterwards) as it doesnt fit right, Im assuming whoever Nokia hired would have done a more professional job with the sound. Well done to pocketnow.com for the scoop  |

the resolution looks pixelated, lower pix density due to larger area and keeping the res 8x4.8 ...
suspect, but again nokia is in bad shape, so its probable. |
Re: N9/N950 image gallery
From Electric Pig website :
12 megapixel camera spotted (0:11) Skip to 11 seconds in and you’ll get a quick glimpse of the camera sensor on the back of the Nokia N9: it’s a 12MP Carl Zeiss jobbie complete with auto focus. That’s music to our ears and eyes, as it means it should match the Nokia N8 for stunning mobile pics. Ovi Maps is coming to Meego (0:17) This was likely filmed before Nokia’s big branding switch this week to drop the “Ovi”, but Nokia’s excellent mapping service is present on the Nokia N9 MeeGo’s menu screens. That should come as no surprise given that it was also present n the Maemo powered Nokia N900, but that lacked turn by turn navigation. Which brings us to the next curiosity: Ovi Drive (0:44) Yeah, what the hell is Ovi Drive? It’s possible it could be a cloud storage service, Dropbox style, but the icon appears to suggest road traffic. Perhaps it’s the turn by turn part of Ovi Maps broken out into a separate app, as Google Maps Navigation is on Android. Card based multitasking (0:24) As a successor to Maemo, we expected multitasking with panes showing the live state of an app, and that appears to be what you get, as you can see in shots peppered through the clip. A non-broken onscreen keyboard (0:28) The Nokia N9 appears to have a slide out QWERTY keyboard akin to the Nokia E7′s, though this has been known about for some time. What’s more of a relief to see is an onscreen QWERTY keyboard that isn’t Symbian’s, whichh we’ve cursed on regular occasion for its grid like layout. Here, the lines are slightly asymmetric, so that they all line up in the centre. Excellent! |
Re: N9 hits FCC???
the first preproduction n900's went around if i am not mistaken at a maemo summit lets keep our finger crossed for a few n9/50 at the approaching meego summit /conference

Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
What annoys me is that the UI must be 'shopped in. Nothing Nokia ever produced was that smooth and responsive. Have you seen that baby? Reminds me of N900 commercials where people just drag video over twitter over browser over notes. Yeah. We all know how that goes on a 600 MHz.
Oh well, looks promising (though it is IMO uglier than N900). Though I can't really picture it being that smooth and fast. If it is, I'm all over it. Also, does it come in black? :P |
Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
It looks definitely like MeeGo.
So now we can just guess if it's meego or hamattan with a meego handset like ui ontop of it. But I'm nearly sure that it is hamattan because nokia doesn't work with meego since they have that silly relationship with ms. |
Re: N9 hits FCC???
1 Attachment(s)
Well, this confirms that it's a 4-row keyboard. The left-down-right cursor buttons have to be below the up button. And what is that slot on the side? It doesn't look like a micro-USB, and they wouldn't put a micro-SD slot there, and it's too big for a microphone...
So it must be the right speaker! Attachment 20175 |

This device will never go on sale ask @zehjotkah he said its only for developers, there is second device coming for end users
EDIT: so get your arses to MeeGo Conf b/c thats probably reason why they needed FCC clearance to give them out there to participants in US. |
Re: Nokia N9 Teaser - is this meego or harmattan?
Who cares what it is running when we have Gods among us who go under such names as Smoku and Cordia Project!!! Nokia can send us whatever OS/UI they want, we will tweak it!
