Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
Hello!
I am swapping my Beagleboard RevC4 for a PandaBoard tomorrow :D My Beagle is sexy and fully setup (super-jumbo) and I'm swapping for a fresh new (brand new) PandaBoard!! http://www.pandaboard.org/ Anyone here have one?? Please let me know if there is anything I need to know or just some info? I know specs and basics.. I just have not met or spoke with anyone about these, yet. I have been a beagle fan for years, but I thought I'd like a speed upgrade and some new tech to play with (OMAP4 :D). Edit: For those not in the "know". This is a DUAL Core 1GHZ OMAP4 with 1GB RAM! :D  |

Damm this is a nice board.

Re: Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
Yeah man!! Looks great and for what I've seen on the net.. Damn powerful and fast! Heat was an issue on earlier builds... I wonder how the Optimus X2 is handing the heat on the OMAP4!

Re: Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
only thing missing is a faster storage, would prefer a sata ssd solution, or even just a CF card slot, they are pretty fast, before i bought SSD's like the vertex & vertex 2, i made my own out of 4x 266x speed CF cards giving almost the same speed as the vertex 2.
I saw a video of this board booting 11.04 and it was ok quick, but it would be seriously fast with a 600x speed CF with 32GB or more. |
Re: Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
I have my Panda!!
I have added a heatsink to the OMAP4 as it over heats pretty bad... Design flaw maybe... http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...t-TQSAVV-1.jpg http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...ent-JQBCVV.jpg |
Re: Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
Overheats as in crashes and stops working?
|
Re: Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
Well mine has not crashed, but it is hotter than my beagle was.
If you have a look around google there are many posts about people with overheating pandas... Mine "seems" ok.. Heatsink looks cool though... |
Re: Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
I'm just wondering about the use of the word "overheating" here. It might be running inside the thermal specifications. Like, typical Intel CPUs are specced to run up to 75C or something, and GPUs run up to 105C or thereabouts without problems...
(And then people go touch chips, depositing body fat in the form of fingerprints, screwing things up) |

Here are a few links about overheating and shutdown,

Re: Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
wtf it has no case?
|
Re: Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
That's why it's called a "board". Pandaboard is interesting in the sense that it has the current Omap4, and thus usable for prototyping OS/software for an Omap4 phone..

Re: Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
So what are your plans for the board?
Having a go to recompile MeeGo/Mer to it? Or how about something more mature like Moblin/ChromeOS/JoliOS/UNR? Do you plan on using Gingerbread for anything? Or a home diy robot with lazurs! |

I have a Pandaboard too. I never tested the heat it produces but a heatsink can't be bad. ;) |
Re: Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
... eBay!
Just basic VGA heatsinks.. I used to use these in my old xbox360 repairs. Gold ones: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Copper-DD...item231061884d Some freaking sweet ones!!!! http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Zalman-ZM...item51984de17c Your PandaBoard, how is it on your tv? I can't get a proper image... Tv overscan I think... Terrible... @Kangal: No plans. Just mucking about. I got my beagle board back, too! Family I back together! Beagle, panda & n900! I've been compiling a kernel and uboot for a while. Having some troubs with the configs.. Not working for me. I got the ubuntu kernel (from GIT) to compile but thats the only kernel which worked... |

On a TV wich supports 720p HD the displayed area was a little bit bigger than the screen. But I think this was a failure of the TV because when I connect a pc or notebook over VGA to it I got the same scary results. I will try it on a newer Phillips FullHD 1080p TV in a few days and post my experiences. |
Re: Just swapped for a PandaBoard - Anyone have one?
I remember reading someplace that the pandaboard was full of software bugs, so I figured on staying with the beagleboard for this sort of thing unless I needed the pandaboard's fancier capabilities.

They are the same heatsinks as mine.. Now... Software bugs? Where did you hear that? There is virtually no software on the board. It's all user compiled (I want to build all my own software from GITs). Routine: X-loader -> Uboot -> uImage. That's it. Any bugs are in either of those 3 pieces or software. Panda seems ok. Just so much more support for beagle.. But slot of the issues can be solved using beagle ideas/support. |
