N900 Vs. Iphone (4)

Hello people, I know this has been talked about a lot, but I wanted people's opinions on this. I have four (yes 4) N900's, and I will never own an iphone (or any apple product for that fact). Basically all of my friends have the iphone 4, and everyday we meet I get more and more disappointed in the iphone product. Here are my reasons why the N900 is way way wayyyy better:

1- Software (Firmware): "Say what? But the ios is so amazing". Fact: it is not. Personally, I love maemo for so many reasons, I do not know where to start. The interface is so lovely, and the fact that the firmware (maemo) is linux based (open source) makes it so much better than the iphone's "non-open source" OS.

2- Unlocking/"Jailbreaking": The N900 comes factory unlocked, while nobody is able to unlock the Iphone via company (meaning via either AT&T OR apple) which KILLS ME!!! I am a mobile software engineer, so I have come across so many cases of unlocking. And I have never ever failed to get an unlock code from the carrier or the manufacturer. When I buy a device, I should be able to sell it whenever, to whoever I want, and that is what companies understand, except I guess AT&T and apple. I just dont get it. People still buy the phone, try to unlock it by going online, and often BRICK the phone because of a glitch in a process that some 12 year old made and uploaded online! Come on!!!! I have come across SOOO many people who have bricked their iphones while trying to unlock it. Jailbreaking: So let me get this straight. To be a "SU", or to even start to enjoy the iphone's abiilites, you need to "jailbreak" it. What does that mean? Well, apparently it (again) means going online and bricking your phone while trying to get SU on it. On the N900, it takes about 2 seconds to download rootsh and you are all set for life!!

3- Hardware: I do not know where to start. I would be sitting in a bar, changing the channels on the TV above me, only to hear this dude by me who has an iphone ask me "Do I have this app? What is this app called?". I guess they dont have an app for "everything" afterall, because their hardware is indeed, weak. Also, My KILLER FM Transmitter gets that question as well so many times. But then there are those who have so much faith in their iphones. "Dude, I bet you somebody has made an app to do that". GOOD LUCK!. So that is about the hardware on the N900. Hardware on the iphone: Well I wanted a pic that my friend took of me, so i asked him to bluetooth send it to me. He could not. Apparantly it is not possible, really???? I really hope I am wrong on this one, because if I can remember, my 1998 cellphone can do that. So that would be a shame.

This is already a long thread, and I am still missing so many things, like the crappy itunes and how people cant upload anything unless it is THEIR own licensed itunes.... Please let me know what you think about this, and give your opinion, which I will respect :) !

You should compare the N900 Vs. The HumancentiPad.

That is a think one.

Grettings.

N900 only compares to iphone 3G hardware wise.
and software wise iOS is still kinda behind. Close the topic now.

What do you mean? Are you saying that the Iphone 4's hardware is much better than the N900's?

Yes iphone 4 hardware wise is above Maemo. Its all over the Web. living under a rock ? but jokes apart..yes..it is.mainly the less ram on N900 is the main bottleneck..

Dude, iphone 3G has 320x480 resolution and N900 has 800x480 resolution. It also has a crappy ARM 11 processor running at 412 MHz while N900 has ARM A8 running at 600Mhz by default and it overclocks to ~1Ghz.

Iphone 3GS's processor is by default as fast as n900's, but it doesn't overclock like n900's and the screen is still crappy.

Iphone 4's CPU is approximately as fast as overclocked n900 and it has little bit better screen.

So I would compare N900 to Iphone 4, if we are talking about hardware and speed.

how did he win? the n900 camera is better. Same MP's but better quality. Did you have live any of the apps/plugins to edit the settings?

okay let's see. "Yes iphone 4 hardware wise is above Maemo." Iphone 4 is the name of the phone, Maemo is the name of the software. So that doesnt make sense. "Its all over the Web. living under a rock ?" " I saw it on the web , SO IT MUST BE TRUE!". The iphone lacks fm transmitter, IR, and so many more things that the N900 has. RAM/Processor: have you tried overclocking your N900??? I ran 45 apps on it yesterday (1 ghz) including an astounding Need for speed undercover game. All at once. Come on!

This sounds right. Except, you can overclock the N900 to more than 800 Mhz, beating the Iphone 4. But remember, hardware doesnt only mean processor speed, what about all those amazing features such as FM Transmitter, FULL bluetooth (which the Iphone lacks), IR.. But good point :)

Zooming? iPhone doesn't have moving parts in the lens, so it can't actually zoom any better than the N900 can.

The N900 can actually physically change its lens' focal length though, unlike the iStuff. *Shrug* Wrong way to compete.

It's not a matter of proof. They both have different bits of hardware, with each device having the better hardware in some categories.

C'mon man.. you know right..if you put Maemo on a Iphone4 Hardware ( the screen and all ) provided the drivers and all work flawlessly... it'll be win right? and seriously what good is a FM transmitter when you cant charge simultaneously while transmitting. X-/

I thought the iphone 4's A8 was running at 1Ghz? Anyway the N900 can beat it in CPU speed at least in some cases and it has better connectivity, but iphone 4 has faster graphic-card and better screen.
N900
  • 600-1200 MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor

I'm fine with the N900 screen honestly, but I wouldn't exactly mind better resolution. More ram of course would be nice, can't argue with that.

I forgot about that little limitation on charging and transmitting. I believe there's ways discovered by now to disable that little "feature". I believe it's a matter of grabbing one of joerg's patched fmtdx binaries and replacing it.

Okay, so... what? If you're actually doing that, you mean to tell me you're reading forum threads while operating a two-or-so ton highly mobile metal object? (Though I suppose you could be a native speaker of one of those languages where "drive" is also used to mean traveling-as-the-passenger-of-the-vehicle.) But seriously, it's one thing to rub in the versatility of your device, it's another to be doing that in a way that can put people and lives in danger.

A friend of mine has an iPhone 3 with iOS 4 , she told me SMS ringtone can not be changed and it took her ~1 hour to find an application that does this and the tutorial with a lot of steps (cutting the ringtone , syncing itunes , installing the app for itunes , setting the tone on phone then setting it on itunes , etc.) . Almost everyday I hear another shamefull thing about iphone .

stop being a fan boy and respect what each phone was made to do.

the iPhone was made for the masses. the N900 was made for us, if any of you let your friend try to do anything with the N900 I promise you they will get frustrated and give up. sure knowing a bit of shell syntax isn't a big deal, but to people who don't use Linux or even a command line it is. and just because something is open sourced doesn't make it automatically better.

am not an apple fan boy far from it, but I know the N900 has its shortcomings and I work around them.

by the way most iPhone jailbreak fine...someone should shut this topic.

If you can't be a N900 fanboy here, where do you suggest?

The OP likes his N900's and I like mine.......I'm looking for another one. As far as hardware comparisons go, the measurebaters can compare all they want, but I find the hardware works fine, as is. It's simply enough to speed things up if required.

I can also carry a spare battery, expand my memory simply and swap those handy little micro sd's at will.

The included AV cable, gets me plugged into a motel TV to watch my collection of DVD's, in any backwater I visit.

The N900 rocks! It plays everything I throw at and controls all my old infrared interfaced equipment!

I really want another one!

I mean really. we know people like this phone/computer/super thing or whatever you want to call it. just stop spamming it, because we know, its like people constantly mentioning justin biebier in youtube videos that don't matter, like metallica videos, its a piss take and ruins a good thing.

I think you are missing the point. I understand and respect what you are saying, but here is why it is not what you are thinking: Look at how many people have iphones, vs how many people have N900's. According to my original post, which you have not contradicted by giving examples, the N900 is a better overall phone, so it is STRANGE that people either dont know about the N900, or im not sure the reason. Which makes this topic very valid. thanks, and please, if you dont like the topic, hit the back button.
