google maps doesnt work right (no info in bubbles above red dots on map)

i got youtube to crash in the second video i opened

honestly youd think they would try the firmware out against popular sites for a while to make sure.

id rather the battery last half as long as it used to, only if it would speed the processor up or something.

sh*ts weak

I'm performing a reflash now because ncurses-lib library is damaged, the update won't work. Can't be uninstalled.

Re: NEW UPDATE OUT!!!! Your thoughts on it..

Indeed

I've yet to upgrade my N800 but from what I'm seeing there aint much there to warrant the time and effort to upgrade right now :(

Any means of overclocking the cpu on the N800 as Garage eluded to . . . sort of

Looks like with Nokia dropping their Invitation Messaging VOIP software we really have no way do perform video calls with desktops anymore. That saddens me as I was looking forward to keeping in touch with a little video chat with friends and family whilst out and about.

So nothing new except a poor flash 9 implementation and skype ? everything else the update brings is either a fix or the official use of some hack (SDHC)

Whats the power management like now ? Does it max the brightness and keep the display on when cabled up and dim when disconnected ? Are there options for that ?

This is all based on hearsay atm; I'm gonna find a window to upgrade sometime later today. Anyone had any luck booting this off an SD/MMC yet ?

Kinda bummed out considering . . .

Ta

Dave

Biggest letdown for me are the non-working themes. I really like the 10 and 12 point themes (for example Nuvo and XP themes). These default themes seem to be for the visually impaired.

Is it the Hildon Theme cacher that's causing the problem? Any ideas anyone?

I can't believe it, trust me. Specially when they didn't make the H1 promise. If you miss the deadline at least deliver the product when its *REALLY* done. No webcam use and crappy flash9 support doesn't seems to be a finished release.

Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter...

I knew. In fact mine was a confirmation that there is no video support in this release of Skype (as someone was still asking about) and I was hoping to find it in the next release.

What is the meat of the browser plugin? Wondering if it is possible to yank it from the 800 and put it on the 770

Skype, along with MSN/AIM is one of the things I hate on Internet those days.
Why should I register to a all those proprietary services?! I don't need to register to Yahoo or GMail to exchange emails with Yahoo or GMail accounts!
I will start a SIP client development/porting of my own. If anybody has good advices of an open source client....

Is it only me or is this firmware update a little disappointing overall? There was such a hype about it, people kept dropping hints there'd be great things ahead... And now? SDHC support, improved touch screen handling. Maybe a few bugfixes, probably some new bugs. No more video chats. 2 new/updated proprietary applications. I would have hoped there would be something really, really big in it, something that makes me want to switch from 770 to N800 for good.... :(

Python works for me too, but I thought it stood in the way of Canola installing. I reflashed and installed Canola first. No problem. Strange.

@Benny: No it's not just you, I think the only good thing in this 'minor update' is a bug fix: the screen responsiveness seems to be good now.

O yeah, they included a chat client: Skype without video to me is just another chat client. It's a waste of good memoryspace, so no install for me.

Makes you wonder what some in-the-know Nokia employee from Texas was hyping about in his -o so funny- riddles...
A buggy Flash 9? Skype without video? Yippee-ki-yay, bud!

Well said. I couldn't agree more. It's a shame we now have Skype on the 770/N800 while the long awaited SIP support is still not available natively. (Of course, there's SIP-support in Gizmo...)

I'd be more than happy if somebody who can do the coding would try to do something about it. OTOH, I'm not sure if porting an existing SIP-client would be The Right Thing(tm) to do: To be really useful, the client should integrate with the telepathy framework. Google for telepathy sofia and sip - there seems to be slow progress on this and it might be wiser to join these efforts than to port somthing like linphone etc.: These clients do their jobs well SIP-wise, but they have the same drawback Gizmo has: they dont integrate with the address book and the rest of the IM framework.

My take is that the biggest feature is the Flash 9.

Talking about the video chat support, I never used/tried it before. What's my understanding is that it has not been removed... in fact it should have been improved! But to test that you need to make Gtalk call to another Gtalk user and after that you "should" be able to open the video. (I never used this feature... so someone who did please confirm this with this new firmware...) This is based on the fact that internal software testers were especially asked to test the video call feature of this new firmware... ;)

And the SDHC support, yes, it is there. While this is good I was slightly disappointed to notice that the transfer speed is about half of the speed that I had with old firmware and SDHC kernel patch. I assume in this firmware the bus clock speed is capped to 24MHz instead of 48MHz? Oh, and one more thing: The famous memory card corruption bug is claimed to be solved in this firmware... :D But we'll see...

Re: Flash 9 update

Nice idea. You should try it! :)

But my guess is that the plugin is optimized for the
N800's CPU (esp. soft float) and will thus not work
on the 770. But it's worth a try.

"A lot of work has been done into increasing the battery life of the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. Most of the improvements have been done around the wireless connection, resulting in remarkably longer online usages."

To me, probably the most important feature, especially if we start using the N800 for intensive telephony.
I guess we ll notice the difference after one day or so.

Re: Breaking News!

So far, pretty nice. I adjusted the screen sensitivity and it seems to work a bit differently now, but a slightly firm press will bring up the thumbboard reliably -- before it was too unpredictable (since the update).

Flash 9 supports webcams, so if there is a way to get it to see our nokia cams, we should be able to video conference using flash web apps (interoperable with all systems).

Nokia Releases Skype, Flash 9, 8GB SD Internet Tablet 2007 Update

Quote:

The long awaited upgrade has finally arrived. Nokia just announced the new Internet Tablet 2007 update v4.2007.26-8. Nokia N800 owners can now enjoy three new much anticipated features: Skype client support, Adobe Flash 9 browser plug-in, and 8GB SD memory card support. Battery life has also been improved on this update, as well as a better touchscreen sensitivity. Nokia however decided to end the beta version of the Call Invitation app by August of this year. Read more at Maemo.org. Download the new Firmware.

If you recall, the hints I dropped were about features the typical user wouldn't notice...

EDIT: to avoid eliciting more juvenile responses from another malcontent, the improvements I alluded to are in areas that developers will have more in interest in. I don't have specifics and never claimed to-- I am just aware that there were general changes that will suit software developers.

It's unfortunate that some are let down by the update. I did expect that, and said so. But I never said this was the end-all, be-all for the N800. There will be more updates for the device. Think of this one as a sort of... bridge to the tablet's future.

Nokia Internet Call and OS2007 Update

Many are complaining about the removal of the Nokia Internet Call feature from the latest update.

What I read from the maemo.org news page is:

"
Nokia Internet Call Invitation (BETA) application

Nokia Internet Call Invitation (BETA) trial period has ended. The invitation mechanism has been removed and service will not be accessible after 2007-08-31.
"

And that is a good news.
The "trial" is over. So it'll be soon out of beta and we'll be able to use it again after the summer.

I think they're ironing it out.

No I m dumb.
I ve been fighting with the settings of my N800 since purchase to extend power. I m curious to see - and measure- the improvement.

With the next updates it s going to be even more crucial to have excellent power management. unless Nokia ships new batteries.

Re: Nokia Releases Skype, Flash 9, 8GB SD Internet Tablet 2007 Update

When I run Gtalk and open the webcam, the camera shows up within Gtalk. Was it always so? And if so, is there a version of Gtalk on PC that allows webcams? (i'm going to a trade show and was kind of hoping to be able to place some video calls from the floor of the show).

you said this once, right. others didnt.

still, i dont consider myself a typical user. if i read the changelog, it seems what's new is very straighforward, aimed at the 'typical' end user. - well, maybe this is why i'm not impressed at all. ;)
