My guess is that they almost certainly have some samples of the TI OMAP 3430 processors, and are working on the OpenGL ES 2.0 hardware support, at the very least insofar as is would be useful for Cairo and basic compositing.

But all that would be more in the research project phase rather than as an actual planned product in development, especially since the 34x0 series represents a (relatively) large departure from TI's previous omap parts.

In addition to watching patents, you could probably also watch OMAP-related linux kernel git submissions. It's shorter notice, but it's also probably a significantly stronger indicator.

Of course, all this is wild conjecture, so take it with several mol of NaCl.

If I were product manager, i'd be extending hildon + kdrive to use opengl ES, with a snazzy iphone/intel MID like UI. Backwards compatibility might be tricky, but it's important to have a manageable way to move existing maemo apps to it.

Access is advertising a linux for 3430, for what that's worth.

For those of us with a yen for linux games and emus in the pocket, the 3420/3430 would be a dream come true. We might be looking at over 3x the perormance of a N800 with comparable power drain.

Even without the ancillary chips, this would mean snappy websurfing on even demanding websites. Ajax and flash. Straight unoptimized ports of a plethora of x86 linux games and emus....

If the device allows left thumb on dpad and right thumb on gaming buttons (the keyboard in the preview might do the trick), this will be a must-buy.

I can't wait for spring 2008!

Whatever it is, i hope to see something like this, with the slider case for durability, better dpad and rhs buttons....

I think multitouch is more likely than additional hardware buttons.

regarding backwards compatibility IIRC i read that the next two generations of the OS will be backwards compatible - sure I read it linked somewhere but I think the original post was on the dev mailing list

Arnim, I'll buy your 770 clone over Thoughtfix's N800 clone any day :-)

I would like a bigger brother of the N800 (twice the size) with additional battery-power but most of all a bigger screen with the same resolution. Because at 100% zoom news items are often too difficult to read as is now. And at 100%+ zoom the characters of items go funny (no separation between words, even sometimes overlapping, etc.).

I say brother, not successor, because I know lots of you go for the compact size too. But mine stays indoors close to my WLAN connection and I wouldn't mind holding a machine twice as big as the N800, which otherwise is the perfect machine for me.

I think it's in Nokia's best interest to truly platform the product, and have, say, 3 or so distinct variants out at one time.

So why don't you buy a Pepper Pad then? It's specs are exactly what you want. But better go for the 3, 'cuz the first model sucked.

I could very easily see Nokia eventually coming out with a two pronged sort of approach to internet tablets, possibly doing something like releasing two tablets per generation, one with beefier multimedia features and one with a more business oriented setup, so I suppose sorta like N and E series net tablets. Maybe they'd also make a really barebones version, or a version with the features of both the N and E tablet? As long as they don't pull a Windows Vista and give us more flavors of tablets than Baskin Robins has flavors of ice cream...
