Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
What makes you think there is an upcoming next gen nokia?
|
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
lack of evidence is proof of existance? :)

Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
Start searching for the patents... that's how news broke about the N800.
|
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
I, for one, hope they focus on the N800 (patches, features, etc.) for the next 1.5 years and worry about a new version then. I really want to see them get the most out of the current hardware before talk of the next gen comes up. There are still plenty of things to be developed and fixed on the N800. I am happy with the N800 and look forward to what the device will become with future OS releases.

Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
It would be crazy of Nokia not to have the next version already in the works. It would be equally crazy to treat the N800 as the 770 was. There have been some improvements on the latter, but still some way to go.
|
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
Indeed. If they would abandon the N800 directly as soon as a successor is around the corner, many people would lose trust in Nokia. I didn't buy a 770, so i dont feel the 'pain' of those buyers. But i can imagine it perfectly.
When the N800 is capable of all the promised features and doing them as they should do (not like now that YouTube movies only play well after they are downloaded, that's crap), then it's time for a bigger step. Although i can imagine they are being busy with developing a N900, 'cause of the market demanding other kinds of technology (in the (near) future). But first make the N800 good please. |
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
There is already Nokia N95 :)
|
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
How can u compare it :)
|
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
my ideal device is the n800 size and form factor but with a much stronger cpu and memory. basically a n800 sized iphone but without the phone off course and the multitouch technology. i still find the n800 a tad bit slow and would like it to be snappy. i do feel that its the second best pocket internet available. the first being iphones safari.

Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
My guess is that they almost certainly have some samples of the TI OMAP 3430 processors, and are working on the OpenGL ES 2.0 hardware support, at the very least insofar as is would be useful for Cairo and basic compositing.
But all that would be more in the research project phase rather than as an actual planned product in development, especially since the 34x0 series represents a (relatively) large departure from TI's previous omap parts. In addition to watching patents, you could probably also watch OMAP-related linux kernel git submissions. It's shorter notice, but it's also probably a significantly stronger indicator. Of course, all this is wild conjecture, so take it with several mol of NaCl. |

For those of us with a yen for linux games and emus in the pocket, the 3420/3430 would be a dream come true. We might be looking at over 3x the perormance of a N800 with comparable power drain. Even without the ancillary chips, this would mean snappy websurfing on even demanding websites. Ajax and flash. Straight unoptimized ports of a plethora of x86 linux games and emus.... If the device allows left thumb on dpad and right thumb on gaming buttons (the keyboard in the preview might do the trick), this will be a must-buy. I can't wait for spring 2008! |
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
Whatever it is, i hope to see something like this, with the slider case for durability, better dpad and rhs buttons....

Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
I think multitouch is more likely than additional hardware buttons.

Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
regarding backwards compatibility IIRC i read that the next two generations of the OS will be backwards compatible - sure I read it linked somewhere but I think the original post was on the dev mailing list

Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
Arnim, I'll buy your 770 clone over Thoughtfix's N800 clone any day :-)

Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
I would like a bigger brother of the N800 (twice the size) with additional battery-power but most of all a bigger screen with the same resolution. Because at 100% zoom news items are often too difficult to read as is now. And at 100%+ zoom the characters of items go funny (no separation between words, even sometimes overlapping, etc.).
I say brother, not successor, because I know lots of you go for the compact size too. But mine stays indoors close to my WLAN connection and I wouldn't mind holding a machine twice as big as the N800, which otherwise is the perfect machine for me. |
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
I think it's in Nokia's best interest to truly platform the product, and have, say, 3 or so distinct variants out at one time.

Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
Well it'll probably be another 6 months at the minimum. Until then bring your 770s and N800s everywhere and generate some word-of-mouth sales for Nokia :))
There's also omap 3410. Given TI's attitude towards open-source, I doubt us 3rd party folk would get much access to the multimedia features, so core and memory speed is what counts for us. A usable OpenGl would also be huge, as it accelerates 2D compositing in addition to 3D, and the API is usable out-of-the box for many desktop apps. The availability of the PowerVR GPU is also a boost to the linux/maemo side of things, since the framework exists there (compiz/beryl for the WM, OpenGL for apps), but not for Symbian or Afaik Windows Mobile. Putting say, a webpage window onto a compiz opengl window means you can get smooth scaling and scrolling with little effort. Same goes for images in an image viewer. Want to take a phone call or answer an IM while watching a youtube video? No problem, just minimize it and you can still see it playing while you do whatever else. The cool factor does sell devices, and the great 800x480 display coupled with a smooth, slick accelerated graphical interface would be the kicker. fingers crossed... |
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
Nokia need to think seriously about continuing with OMAP devices if TI continue to withold vital development information from the open source community - maybe Nokia should look to Samsung for alternative ARM-based SoC. There is precious little freely available information covering the TI DSP, IVA (video) or MBX (PowerVR) hardware all of which could be useful if the proper documentation were available to allow people make use of them.
"Cool" features won't appear or won't be viable due to decisions Nokia made before the release of the 770, the mistake being to partner with the open-source unfriendly TI. Intel based MIDs with well understood accelerated 2D/3D, video and DSP hardware will get all the "cool" features while the Nokia tablets slog away getting the CPU to do everything (sluggishly) while dedicated hardware is ignored. |
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
6 words: It is going to be cool. Eventually. :p
|
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
one thing i'm hoping is whatever the cpu is, that it doesn't run hot and make the unit have to have a fan to blow out the heat. that would suck for so many reasons.

Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
I want a device that runs this http://www.sun.com/software/javafx/mobile/index.jsp
with slide under keyboard (throw in a touchscreen if you like), built in WiMax, WiFi, GPS, SDHC... If we're gonna dream ;-) |

Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
Hi
I really miss not having a qwerty keyboard - Had one on my mobile phones for the last 3 years... Any successor needs to have HSDPA also for a browse anywhere internet experience. It should also have a 400MHz samsung proc - much faster for the MHz than the StrongArm equiv. I'd also like to see a mobile video chip and a 1024x600 screen Nigel |
Re: any news on any upcoming next gen nokia?
Thanks for linking to the post on Engadget, although QWERTY is not what I want most.
The next gen will have WiMax (but not HSDPA) which means no more searching for WiFi hotspots. Does not need Samsung proc, but it could benefit from improved HW video processing. Of course, higher resolution is always nice, but the current display is still better than most. |
