I asked abill_uk a couple questions some time ago that were aggressively dodged. Everyone says that "meego can't" and I'm asking "why not?"

Because there are closed bits in Maemo that, barring a miracle, Nokia will never release. MeeGo is fully open, and putting idle effort into a poll and demanding things that have not yet come despite far better, more well reasoned arguments just wastes time and effort better put into something else.

You want to improve things? There's a fully open project with N900 support right now that needs input, whether it's code, testers, graphical designers.

So you have a problem with us trying again to get this code released? Why do you have such a problem with this?

People are only saying that MeeGo can't replace Maemo ATM. Not never but just atm it cannot. That is why we want to just bug fix Maemo and get these open source replacements done quickly, and the source code would allow us to quickly get these replacements done.

If you have a look, you will see that in other threads and this one, I mentioned that we shoud use the open source code for the N900 adapatation of MeeGo as fundamentals such as SMS sending and recieving and the database implementations within Conversations, as well as the Phone application is going to have similar if not the same code that is within the closed source maemo version.

Thanks, that link was really helpful, most of the ref was about Maemo 4.1, but what the hey, I was honestly interested in what specific parts of Maemo 5 were closed.

I understand why companies have closed stuff, I work for Schlumberger D&M, aiming for a job in R&D, so the idea of closed source isn't a new one for me!

Also I wasn't having a go, Nokia have the right to protect their own source and ideas/code, I was honestly interested in why their is such a debate over this, and was going to say, even if we had the source would it make much of a difference.

Don't be so quick to say "those who don't know or understand what closed is", I was honestly interested in specifics, if no-one can be bothered to answer then fine, but just say that or point me to a decent ref point where I can read for myself.

And this is the whole big reason why Meamo followers should really consider adapting any linux os to the N900. By the way I see it, its really not about resurrecting a nearly dead horse, its about raising several ponies. I had enough with Apple ios bs and then Android on the same path.

This would be a nice view to me.
A smallprint KDE ui or even a Netbook Remix launcher, which would save a lot of screen wear, faster user interface, less errors, saves battery by not scrolling a lot,etc.

I don't think so. Showing your support is also a way to get things improved.

Or just move along with something that you don't get a damn.

While you actively wasting your own valuable time on attacking things that you don't like, wasting the time that could otherwise be spent on getting a lot of work done you think that could improve things that you support.

I don't really like MeeGo at its present stage, but I wouldn't spend all my days on attacking it. I see that you don't like Maemo and Nokia, but I think it's time you move along with your life when you finally find something else that draw your attention and dedicate your effort on. I have read everyones points onhere so far and i cannot help myself to reply to some....

JOHNLF says "it aint happening get over it move on" Ok your point is clear BUT we are talking about a Linux based OS here and it is crazy to suggest Linux is no good when it has a place in almost every industry in the world, saying to forget it and move on is just not the answer.

Wmarone still goes on about the driver argument i talked about yonks ago in this forum referring to all the closed components on the N900.
One of his replies was MeeGo already has BME....... REALLY it has been released to Carston and not to the CSSU team?.

I asked stskeeps to verify this but i have not got an answer yet.

What is going on here it seems is Nokia does not want anyone to work with Maemo as they have a preference of MeeGo and as stskeeps and wmarone are hell bound to get MeeGo up and running is really the reason they are both completely ignoring Maemo and anything to do with its future.

MeeGo is A joke considering Nokia have released closed code to Carsten because if this is the case and they do have the code, we are asking the release from from Nokia, then something IS very wrong here.

Now wmarone would you like to tell everyone here once again that stskeeps does have even BME ? when the CSSU team do not, here is your chance to explain YOURSELF ok.

I would like a Moderator to look into how the voting is handled on a Poll because it needs to be corrected as it appears you can vote for BOTH answers.
This is wrong and should not be like this.
