It would be very nice of them if they did release it... :)

Re: PETITION to Nokia to release the full source code of the Maemo OS to this Community.
I don't regularly use these forums and have a "basic" N900 with a few apps installed, and am fine with it. I thought others would like to know what I heard today, given that I heard about it from someone who doesn't even own an N900.
I was talking with my cousin today and she asked me about this very poll (I didn't know what she was talking about until I came on here to see it). Amazingly, she said that she had heard about it (she doesn't own an N900, but knows that I do) from her chiropractor as her chiropractor's son is a programmer for Nokia who had worked on the N900 for over a year. She said that after hearing that his son worked for Nokia, that she mentioned that she had a cousin (me) who owned an N900. She said that her chiropractor said that his son mentioned during a phone conversation last night that he first heard about this poll in a department meeting two days ago, as it had caught the attention of several department leaders who sometimes read these forums, and that it was "the buzz around the office". Supposedly, assignments were handed out to see what could be done to "release the N900's software" (her words). A follow up meeting dedicated solely to this subject is supposedly going to be scheduled sometime next week, with the actual meeting taking place sometime within the next month. Out of curiosity, I look on the forums to find out what she is talking about and see this thread! My cousin only sees her chiropractor once a month, so I might not get an update on the situation until then (maybe towards the end of next month?). I'm almost inclined to injure my back somehow so that I have a reason to see her chiropractor, but that's not going to happen (she lives about 4 hours from me). I will keep everyone updated on what I find out. |

Don't blame me for being skeptical because my aunts veterinarian daughter works for Nokia as well and she said that this is a bunch of bull :)

How embarrassed will i be if this turns out to be true, i am going to have to stop putting so much faith in my aunts veterinarian daughter who works for Nokia.

Ok she's just a Nokia phones promoter, but that doesn't change the fact that she works for Nokia and we cannot doubt her creditability. Let's start a pre-debate on creditability issues of any single employee in Nokia on confirmation of rumors before we debate on the creditability on Uber_L33t_Hax0r. After that we could continue debate on whether abill_uk's poll has any economic values. We haven't had enough fun on debating. |
Re: PETITION to Nokia to release the full source code of the Maemo OS to this Community.
abill_uk,
To state this very very clearly: * Nokia is actively funding a team working on DE consisting of Nokia employees and subcontractors. I am one such subcontractor. These people can work on the closed source parts due to the contractual relationships. * Our goal is to provide a solid foundation for you and everyone to help build a phone OS on top of with base use cases already working (hw adaptation, calls, sms, browser, camera). If you believe in community's power to create brilliance you should love this. * We take hardware support things such as BME, make them work under MeeGo and publish as binaries under redistributable licenses. We also if possible, open source some things. This is not always possible due to third party IPR, patents or whatever, but we do our best. * Anything non-hardware specific contributed is usable on all other MeeGo devices. * No, we're not going to touch the Maemo5 UI code. It is a dead end. We do Qt, Qt Quick, not dead end GTK+ mixed with Hildon. * As a final side note, you keep saying MeeGo isn't being built for N900. It is. Having lower end hardware working fine makes a lot of sense as value. |
