Can anyone of self proclaimed developer status list the MOST important packages for license change request? I.e. No one gives a sh|te about 'sketch' or 'marbles game'.

For example could you choose the 5 MOST important packages from this list (or add more) that you would want. Joerg, Mohammed, Nicolai ETC I am looking at YOU.

As far as I can see the most important pieces are BME, MCE and flasher. To a lesser extent, details of the 'bin' format used for flasher.

When we have a list of the MOST necessary files, some of our more eloquent members (mentalist traceur, myself (whatever)?) can start crafting a bulletproof set of letters that can be copied/modified/distributed among ALL TMO members and emailed from their personal addresses to the people it concerns (eflop, klapper, qgill, texrat, each individual member of the council, nokia toilet cleaners, nokia support, EVERYONE).

?

I know it seems somwhat hopless, however I believe it is worth a shot.

Nokia is a company out there to make profit, it's not developing new products and what not just because it has nothing better to do. Therefore, just because people on the forum sign a petition for Nokia to release the full source code it is highly unlikely that Nokia will even do so much as consider releasing it. On the other hand if you were to pay for it, that would be a different story. So I just felt that the petition was pretty useless which was why I picked no, the other people that voted know probably thought the same way.

I'm sorry, but every company that invents something important also carries a responsibility before society to carry it forward to its logical conclusion. This is not a case of "it's my cake, you can't have it". Maemo is an important step forward in mobile computing and should be treated as such, not put under a paperweight to be forgotten.

If we had this patent etc ownership system thousands of years ago when the wheel was invented, would you still be defending the person that would say: "Sorry, I invented it and I don't see any way to make money off it so now nobody can use it."

By your logic, we should be using sleds or tracks for driving on roads. Unless somebody would patent those too.

Any initiative to bury development that will hinder progress should be considered unlawful and all such patents null and void.

they didnt support the n900
the ovi store is empty. the app manager is full.
and now they are releasing meego for developers only.
and why?
so n900 users develop for other mobiles.
99% of the support is from the community and 1% from nokia.
i think they should release the source code as they dont support the n900.
thanks to the community support the N900 is a great device.

TO both you and Ykho your reasons do not figure because what your in fact doing by saying NO is supporting Nokia and not the very Community you are members of !.

If this Community had access to even half of the code the CSSU would simply take over from Nokia and give you the much needed support with all the knowledge needed to do so.

Support the Community it is seperate and nothing to do now with Nokia and as we all know full well what Nokia has done the only support the N900 will get IS from this Community.

Your all entitled to your views but i still do not see a sound reason for NOT giving the source code of the N900 to the CSSU of this Community.

I'm not sure if nokia will make it open-source, but i will support the initiative.

Sry to say I'm moving to Samsung Infuse, as i don't have AT&T 3G band with my N900.

I like this idea, but I do imagine a couple of reasons why Nokia might decline this to be fair.

Nokia may not want to put the time/effort/money into monitoring the activities of a select few hobby coders.

And as we know the CSSU guys are doing this in their free time, so Nokia could hold a reluctance to entering into a contract with people who may loose interest or are affected by outside influences after a few months and sit on the code with no further progress to show for the rest of the contractual term?

OK so I don't really believe the last part myself but with the enlisted help of the maemo council, they could take the position of a "CSSU governing body" to and report back to Nokia with updates such as...

• developing the scope statement;
• selecting the planning team;
• identifying deliverables and creating the work breakdown structure;
• identifying the activities needed to complete those deliverables and networking the activities in their logical sequence;
• estimating the resource requirements for the activities;
• developing the schedule
• gaining formal approval to begin work

This could provide Nokia with a more structured offer in return for handing over their code?

This is just a suggestion really, don't know how possible this or a similar idea would be accepted. I will end my babbling now :)

We did pay for it... most of us bought this multi-hundred dollar device, which had the cost of R&D figured in. That's the part most people here aren't getting. I understand the desire to keep things closed if there's code that's being used in future generations, or exposes "trade secrets". But blaming it on cost or "potential support issues" for a device they're no longer developing or supporting is bogus.

As for the petition, I'll be adding this little "financial incentive" statement in to mine:

Not releasing this code, in what is now an end-of-life development line, will be a clear sign to me that Nokia is using the Roman tactic of poisoning the well. If that happens, Nokia devices will be far less desirable to me. It would likely influence my future purchases, where I would strongly lean away from purchasing future Nokia products.

If they get that message often enough, it may just sink in that how they treat past customers will affect future sales.

Really, if they don't open-source the N900 and the future "N950" when/if it comes out has the same deal, how many people will avoid buying it because of that? How many more sales of the N950 (and the N900) would they have (had) if they were to open key parts? There are several people here that didn't buy the N900 strictly because of problems with getting support and/or source for closed components in the N700/N800 product lines (and were quite vocal about their reasons... isn't that right gerbick? ;) )
