I have a question to ask, how much would you value the ability to display transaction records? MaeMony has it, but I rarely use the feature because I don't have that many real investment to check and I don't care about the details, I just need an overview of cost/value/gain. In Stocona
he data is readily available in Stockona, the data are readily available, but if transaction records are not a valued feature, I can put it to low priority and disable the query to save network traffic.

A new release (0.1.2) has been pushed to extras-devel. This release contains several bug fixes:
1. Fix the chart link bug reported by MyNokiaN900.
2. Portrait mode news link.
3. Portfolio description parsing.

Plus, again there is an easter egg somewhere in the app. It should be easy to find!
The feature is still under development and is not function-complete, but you get to try the UI flow. Suggestions are welcomed!

I have bought shares once before and took a screenshot of the transaction page to be added to my transactional Goolge page later. I do have all my transactions recorded. I think it would be useful, but would go on the basis of it being a "low priority" if no one else uses this feature.

I see the update and the fix to the charts. Amazing stuff Sony123.

An idea:

I love this feature and it's so quick to load the links and mini stories, but why can't you have the full website stay loaded in your app with icon overlays or shortcuts back to main page of Stockona or main page of Quote, rather than exit and open in my default browser. I would prefer it to load directly in Stockona that way there is no extra application open.

Is that possible? (perhaps an option in Menu to use default browser or Stockona as browser).

Charts definitely work for me and they are the right charts, as in they match with the quote price. (Version 0.1.2.).

I have studied this... the solution is to instantiate a WebKit view inside the app. It should be easy from the info I gathered, the only thing I am not sure about is how to tune the font size.

I decided, well, since it's not too difficult, I will push it to some time later and work on the local portfolio support first. Seeing that there is indeed such need, I will make WebKit integration the next feature to be added.

there is one stock in the portfolio and that is BHP Australia Symbol which shows me the correct price but says chart is not available.

Cool I get it. It's the conversion function... I didn't map ASX to AX because yahoo doesn't provide ask/bid price info so I thought there's no need to do the mapping. The function is called when request chart from Yahoo but there's no mapping so the query is "BHP.ASX" instead of "BHP.AX." I will fix that in the next release..

Thought I would give an update on the development work...

I don't have much progress on local portfolio, as I finally have to dig into C++ side and the interaction between QML and C++ is more complicated. It is not bad, just that I have little experience with Qt so need some try-and-error to figure out how to get it done. I'm getting some progress but don't expect to see a mature local portfolio feature anytime soon.

Meanwhile, I have integrated webview into stockona to support in-app news viewing, as MyNokiaN900 suggested. However, I don't really like how there is little control to webview and how webview doesn't reflow the text properly. I think the integration is ok-ish now, but I will make it a configurable option in when I push the feature into extras-devel. Before that, I plan to publish a test release on Nokia Developer's website to get some feedback. Hopefully this will be done in the next few days.

I'm experiencing performance issue (scrolling not smooth) and I have no idea why. I'm trying code change using techniques from QML performance guide, but don't have much luck so far....

As a result, I have merged some of the bug fixes back to 0.1.0 and it looks ok. That version is without news webview, so if I couldn't get the development version working satisfactory this weekend, I will just release this special bug fixing version.

By the way, Stockona has been selected for the community device program! Thanks a million for everyone's feedback!

Thanks, ... and here's the good news! I was able to improve the scrolling so in the earlier test build it's smooth like 0.1.0. But I have made some changes since, so need to try on device tmr to confirm the speed is still there.

A new release (0.1.4) has been pushed to extras-devel. This release contains:
- Numerous bug fixes
- In-app news view: Directly view related news within app. This is a configurable option in the setting menu.
- Performance tuning to reduce the number of elements in the memory.
- Cosmetic tweak to progress bar.

There are many code changes in this release so be aware of bugs. Enjoy!

Any new features planned. What abt feature to add stocks directly from the app and a small widget which just shows stock name and the price only. on clicking the widget it takes us into the stockona app for more info

Thanks for testing and the praise, that's a great compliment because that is what I set out to achieve.

Yes, local portfolio creation is under developement, it'll take a while. I don't know about desktop widget..... first of all, there's MarketToday for that. Secondly, Harmattan cannot use it. Lastly, Stockona is using javascript to do the loading & parsing now, and this might incur too much system load when running as a widget.

So, local portfolio is near-term feature and C++ rewrite of backend is something I'd like to do longer term.

Hi sony123, is it possible to make a view which has very minimal info abt a stock so that more stocks are viewable on the screen estate.

like you can have the stock code then the stock price and the % change which can fit in a single slim row of the size of a single excel sheet row.

Hi anismistry, I do see the value of such mode, and actually the other I feel the need to have such mode, too. I'm thinking I will overload the view button so it toggles between 'quote' - 'portfolio' - 'widget' mode.

Let me get the local portfolio thing to a more mature stage, and I will work on the "widget" mode next.

I have put another test build on Nokia Developer's page, the version number is the same at 0.1.5. (Go to the bottom of summary page to download.) Due to file format change please remove /home/user/.stockona before you launch the program, otherwise the application will crash during startup.

Only test this build if you know what you're doing and you know how to delete files on device. The developer is not responsible for any data loss or device breakage :D

The last build was really lousy... this build fixes the seg fault bugs and also the flow is a bit cleaner. I have also finalized the file format (I hope). The editing is still a bit inconsistent, some operation like adding and editing entry is immediately written to file. For deleting, currently deleting position is immediate but not portfolio, you need to press "=" to really save the change. I don't know which way is preferable... and if you have a preference let me know.

So again a summary on how to use local portfolio:
1) Portfolio: "+" to enter edit mode. In edit mode, "+" to add new entry, "=" to save change. Single press leads to position edit mode, long press and hold leads to editing the current portfolio information.
2) Position: Position view is always in edit mode, "+" to add new entry, "=" to save change (this is redundant in the current configuration since every operation in position edit mode is immediate).

So the idea of local portfolio is, you create a portfolio by entering name and description. You also select whether it is an Yahoo portfolio. If this is a yahoo portfolio, data will be fetched from Yahoo instead of Google. This is to deal with some symbols not available on Google. This setting is per-portfolio not per-symbol, because I fear the overhead in making query request per-symbol will cause UX issues... (The routine for Yahoo quote is not completed yet so it's not working in this build....). For a position, if this is a google portfolio and its stock exchange is NYSE/NASDAQ/AMEX, you can skip the exchange field. For yahoo quote, enter the whole symbol name as appeared in Yahoo
Finance and skip the exchange field (in the later release I will grey out exchange field when in a yahoo portfolio. Share and cost should be obvious, currently when displaying local portfolio, I haven't added the logic to calculate the value, gain, and return information so they are 0 for now. Stop price is for future development, I'm thinking of hooking into Harmattan notification area when stop price is met, but I haven't studied how so the info is not used anywhere in the app.

- Add widget-style view suggested by anismistry. This setting is just like portfolio view, you can either set it as default view in the setting menu, or you can cycle through 'standard' - 'portfolio' - 'widget' views by pressing the 'View' button.
- Add '5-day' option to chart view. Also add S&P 500 comparison chart by clicking the chart image.
- Primitive local portfolio support is activated. The file format is finalized, so the future improvement will be on the robustness and UX. Yahoo symbol support has been added, but the UX is still similar to the experimental build so please read the how-to from post #70.

Extras-devel seems to be not working now, so I only uploaded to Nokia Developer project site. I will push to extras-devel later this week.

I like what you are doing with the widget idea and can also tell you I am enjoying accessing the news articles withing Stockona.

Now the view displays 10 symbols (not counting the one blocked by buttons). I can tweak the font size and the spacing to squeeze one or two more symbols in... but I start feeling your eye sight is way better than mine!

I'm getting more busy at work so probably will wait till weekend to do the experiment.

hi
the app is crashing after the new update.
i tried to add a symbol from the app RIO.AX clicked on yahoo code and saved. After this the app crashed, now when ever i try to login it logs me in and crashes. I tried to unintall it purge from xterm and install but it remembers by details and still crashes. How can i prevent it from remembering my details after uninstall so that that i can do a fresh install. please help

Ah, sorry to hear that. Don't worry it's easy to recover (Can you do me a favor by pasting the content of the two files mentioned below?)

In xterm or filebox:
1) go to /home/user/.stockona
2) You should see portfolio.cfg and 0.pos.
3) Delete or rename them, say "0.pos.bkp." The app should start up fine afterwards.

I am thinking it's the position file that caused the problem....
The content should be something like:
[symbol name]:[exchange name]:[share]:[cost]:[stop price]:[reserved]

For yahoo only symbols, ignore the exchange field and type in the yahoo symbol name (in this case RIO.AX, notice that it's a dot) in the symbol field.

I think I know what happened. You put RIO:AX in it, but ";" is the delimiter for the file format, so effectively you add one more column and the program doesn't like it.

I will do two things, mask out the exchange field when in yahoo-only portfolio, and figure out a more elegant way to deal with invalid file format.

Just to let users know.... I found in landscape view, the chart cannot be toggled to S&P 500 comparison chart. I have filed a ticket and will fix it in the next revision.
