Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

Just a short notice - a new Mieru version with a Qt Components GUI will be released in the coming days.

It will first be released for Harmattan (N9 & N950) and then then for Fremantle (N900), once some Fremantle Qt Components issues are resolved.

A few highlights:
  • more fluent and touch friendly UI
  • improved kinetic scrolling
  • on screen paging buttons
  • pinch zoom on Harmattan

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

Release announcement repost from the other Mieru thread on forum.meego.com.

I have not yet really tested this new Mieru version with Qt Components based GUI on Fremantle, but it should hopefully run without requiring many changes.

It is my pleasure to introduce Mieru - a flexible manga and comic book reader.
Mieru (見える) is a Japanese word that can be translated as to be seen, to look or to appear.

As the Qt Components (a major dependency of the new Mieru UI) port has seen big improvements recently, I will be getting to this shortly.

Also:

Testers needed ! :)
Mieru is one positive testing report away from entering the main Apps for meego repository.
What needs to be done ?
If want to help, just follow the Apps for MeeGo testing guidelines and fill in the test form on the Mieru testing page. Don't forget the Should the application be in this application catalog ? checkbox! :)

Thanks in advance !

Thanks for the vote !

Also, thanks to all the other testers ! :D

Mieru is now in the Apps for MeeGo main repository and can be easily installed using the Apps for MeeGo client ! :D

Or even easier, just scan the attached QR code and press Download (you need to have a QR code scanning application like MeeScan and the the Apps for MeeGo client installed for this to work. :) ).

The new version looks really nice, But since I "only" have an N900 I can't use it (yet). So any news about a N900/Fremantle Version ;) ?

Please add page fitting for Harmattan version.

OK, noted. Should be quite easy to add (a selector in options & the paging pop-up menu). :)

How about not having a settings page but:
- Fit to screen in portrait and to width in landscape automatically.
- Lock minimizing when whole page is inside the viewing area (portrait) and when page width equal to screen width in landscape. (no blank area around the page)

btw I think I found a bug.
1. Read a manga chapter
2. Quit Mieru
3. Delete the manga chapter using filebox
4. Now in Mieru open anything, it will only show the first page with chapter size (1/0).
to fix:
go to history and remove the deleted chapter

I have added support for multiple page fitting modes, including your suggestion - I called it "orientation specific". Other than that there is "1:1", "custom" (it just remembers the scaling factor), fit to width, fit to height, fit to screen and "show the most" (this tries to show the largest part of the page and minimize scrolling).

Thanks! Should be fixed in the new version. :)

Also a friend of mine tried to run Mieru with new Qt Components based GUI on his N900 with CSSU - after commenting out a single line, everything works with very minor issues (a missing icon, some unaligned labels, no minimize button) and the performance is reportedly really good.

Kozzi 2012-01-29 00:49

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

the orientation mode is awesome, thanks alot.

- When in settings page, rotate the phone from portrait to landscape and back make on/off sliders disappear.
- Having statusbar activated cut part of the suggestion popup.

I got mieru.py error when I use the new version fir the first time, but it's gone now.

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

Time for an official release post. :)

Mieru 2.2.3 has been released !
The main improvement is the support for multiple page fitting modes, Mieru no longer gets stuck when the current chapter is deleted and reads files with Japanese/Chinese and other Unicode characters in name without a hitch.

Changelog:
Code:

V 2.2.3
* fix switches in options vanishing after orientation change
* fix notifications overlapping with status bar
* fix image overlapping during page transition
* add direct links to FMO and TMO threads

V 2.2.2
* add page fit support with multiple available modes
* add rotation lock button to quick menu
* fix Mieru getting stuck if currently open chapter file is deleted
* fix Mieru not opening chapters with Unicode characters in name
* various minor fixes and improvements

Thanks to Kozzi and others for reporting bugs (so I can fix them :) )!

Me too. I'm still using cbrPager and I would like to see new alternatives in the N900.

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

Everything works fine now, thanks very much. i haveöthe latest version but there is only fmo link in the info page.

Is it possible to have "new release" notification for mangas in the library ? Having library in list view with cover image and chapters and volumes separated like it's done in Tv-series section in Xbmc remote would be awesome. Images can be found on mangafox as well as info whether there is new chapter.

I'm working on it right now. :) Most things are working already but there are still some glitches. Also, for some reason things that don't need modification on Fremantle with CSSU break quite horribly on Vanilla (PR 1.3) Fremantle. Might be due to older Qt (4.7.0 vs 4.7.4 in CSSU) and PySide.

I plan to support both - looks like the version for Fremantle CSSU can share the same QML files with Harmattan while Fremantle Vanilla needs separate "forked" files due to specific Qt Components namespace (org.maemo.fremantle) and all the glitches.

I would say that at some point it will be unavoidable to need CSSU for developing new applications. Imagine when Qt 4.8 becomes available, so I would suggest you not to bother with vanilla PR1.3 but at least try to keep it in good shape with Stable CSSU.

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

Updated package for Maemo 5 Fremantle with CSSU
So I finally worked out most of the quirk for running Mieru 2.x on Fremantle and made an installable package. :) It's manual installation only for the moment though I plan to also properly update the package in Extras in due time. This package also basically requires CSSU - you can install it even without it but quite a lot important things (like page fitting) just don't work properly, most probably to old & broken Qt/QML/PySide version.

If you spot some bugs or other issues, please let me know. :)

How to install ?
First, you need to became root.
Then, install all the needed dependencies:
Code:

apt-get install qt-components-10 libzip1 unrar python-pyside.qtgui python-pyside.qtdeclarative
Uninstall the currently installed mieru package, just to be sure (all your settings/history will be untouched by this):

Code:

apt-get remove mieru
Download the package somewhere:
Code:

wget http://m4rtink.github.com/mieru/packages/mieru_2.2.27_armel.deb
And install it:
Code:

dpkg -i mieru_2.2.27_armel.deb
How to return to the old interface:
Just uninstall the package and install it from Extras-devel:
Code:

apt-get remove mieru
apt-get update
apt-get install mieru

How to go to the task switcher ?/ How to minimize Mieru ?

Tap the upper left corner. :)

How to shutdown Mieru ?

There is a Quit button in the main menu.

Nice !

Rm-rf-ing the /opt/mieru folder should be safe as all user data is stored in ~/.mieru anyway. :)

I'll try to reproduce the issue (eq. installing the package over the version from Extras) tomorrow and find a fix for it. :)

I get it too - doesn't seem to cause any harm though. The line it points to is just the instantiation of the main QApplication, nothing special.

BTW, anynone else get those startup errors, this how you can start Mieru directly, without the startup script in /usr/bin/mieru:
Code:

python /opt/mieru/mieru.py -u harmattan -p maemo5

This is great!

However, it's time to start thinking about applications depending on latest CSSU. Right now, you won't be able to promote this package to Extras, and that rule should be overridden.

One remark and one question :)

Question:

Is it my imagination, or could I zoom with the volume buttons in the previous version? Maybe I am mistaken and it was never there...

Edit: it was for turning pages. New method is even better.

Remark:

Could you add an icon to the latest installable deb file? It is missing now.

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

Might be a silly comment, but: why is the japanese set in a serif font when the regular name set in sans-serif on the splash harmattan splash screen? lol

MartinK 2012-03-01 19:12

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

I have found and (hopefully) fixed the installation issue. Quite interestingly, it was caused by old byte compiled python (*.pyc) files remaining from the previous version overriding new files, leading to those "argument not found" errors.

Updated installation instructions
First, you need to became root.
Then, install all the needed dependencies:
Code:

apt-get install qt-components-10 libzip1 unrar python-pyside.qtgui python-pyside.qtdeclarative
Download the package somewhere:
Code:

Well, I would say that a big part of users has Extras-devel enabled, but still a good point. As Mieru really doesn't have any exotic dependencies, this issue should really be solved.

I have investigated how to use the volume buttons from a Qt application and found this:

Maemo 5 zoom example
Example on Maemo Wiki

Not really sure how to do this from Python + PySide...
Some sort of an utility/wrapper written in C/C++ might be needed. :)

IIRC, I typeset the English text first and then found that the font won't render kanji, so I found other roughly similar font and used it for the Japanese part. :)

There is an icon in the deb file, but it does not show. It could be some setting on my device (I use categorize), but I doubt it. It shows up in the menu on your device?

Here is what I did to make it show on my device:
- Resized the icon to 64x64 and put it in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64/apps.
- Moved mieru.desktop to /usr/share/applications/hildon (from /usr/share/applications) and changed the reference to the icon.

Now it shows the icon in the menu, but maybe it is a specific issue on my device after all.

I have the same problem:D

Well, the package is bit of a hack at the moment. :) Currently its the same package as for Harmattan that in its postinst detects if it is running on the N900 (using /proc/cpuinfo) and does some Fremantle specific modifications (copy the icon to other folder, add startup script, etc.).

This is a temporary solution I used to get a workable package quickly. A proper package is still needed:
  • that postinst hack is ugly and potentially fragile - you really don't want a failing postinst script :)
  • different icon size - 80x80 for Harmattan vs 64x64 for Fremantle
  • different desktop file location
  • different dependencies - Fremantle has unrar in the repo but Harmattan doesn't so Mieru has to ship with an unrar binary
  • you can't place a startup script to /usr/bin/ on Harmattan or your package would not pass the Ovi QA - see the list of path name exceptions
  • Harmatan applications mostly use invoker for splash screens & single instance behavior in their Desktop files, making the Desktop files incompatible with Fremantle
Fortunately as I already have quite a nice & fast packaging setup comprising from:
  1. a bash script that pulls current source from GIT, sets version + changelog and initiates packaging (i really should finally clean this up a bit and publish it somewhere :) )
  2. a setup.py script that uses Khertans nice sdist_maemo module and builds the source package
  3. and a COBS repo that builds the actual installable package (the bash script automatically uploads the source package using osc once it's done with packaging)
Modifying it to produce a customized Fremantle package should not be that hard. :)

Mieru package in Apps for MeeGo updated - testing needed !

I have updated the Mieru package in Apps for MeeGo testing, so it is currently on the same level as the version in Ovi store. Please test (see the community QA testing guidelines) and then fill in the QA form. Don't forget to tick in Should the application be in this application catalog?, provided that you think Mieru is worthy of this, of course. :) Thanks in advance ! :)

What do I need to test applications in Apps for MeeGo ?

A new version of QtComponents for Fremantle is in Extras Devel. Would you try to upload Mieru to Devel depending on it?
