I've already tested Mieru on Fremantle with the updated componnents package and it seems to work fine.

As for uploading do Extras-devel, some packaging work is still needed. For example, I need to present non-CSSU users with the old interface, as last time I tested the intreface was horrendously bugged with the old Qt & PySide versions. Also my N900 is already on CSSU, so I don't really have an easy way of testing on plain Fremantle. :) Would need to install the Maemo SDK + Xephyr combo probably.

A small note about Ovi store availability - I fixed a mistake in country-selection, which prevented Chinese users from downloading Mieru. :)

Mieru on the HP Touchpad@WebOS@chroot

http://www.modrana.org/touchpad_chro...006_medium.jpg

I have succeeded in running Mieru on the HP Tuchped, under Web OS in Chroot.

It is using on-device compiled QtComponents (version from git, with libmeegotouch and other unnecessary dependencies disabled in configure, don't forget to change the hardcoded 854x480 screen size) with Blanco theme copied from MeeGo SDK. Other dependencies (Python, PySide, Qt) were readily available in the Ubuntu repositories.

It is unfortunately not very usable due to very slow and laggy page panning. Might be still quite usable for fit-page-to-screen reading though.

Android port
As Mieru is not very usable in chroot under WebOS (see above), I'm now trying to get run natively under Android, using THP's PySide port.

You can track my progress on the Android porting page on modRana project wiki.

Web OS native port
There has been some early work on a native Mieru port for WebOS. I don't consider it a priority at the moment - much more stuff would neet to be compiled + ported (Qt compile, Python compile, PySide port, QtComponents port) and WebOS seems to be going down the drain, at least for the Touchpad.

Packages from the Mieru OBS repository should work on CSSU with Fremantle.

Unfortunately, the new QML interface doesn't work very well with on Vanilla PR 1.3 Fremantle. As I don't want to upgrade all users of the old Clutter based interface to a new broken one, I need to make sure the Clutter UI is still working (shouldn't be very difficult as Mieru is designed to support many different GUI modules) and do some sort CSSU or Qt version detection, that would launch the Clutter UI for PR 1.3 users and the QML UI for users on CSSU.

After this is in place, I'd like to do regular releases to Extras, as with modRana.

BTW, some features that were recently added (and are available in the package from OBS):
  • localization support
  • Czech, German and Russian localization
  • manga mode
  • improved paging feedback
  • code cleanup

Main planed features: online repository support, Flattr button & whats new pop-up on significant updates.

Installed deb from OBS repo, but needed to install libzip1 as package depends on it.

Works great, only needed to blacklist the app on transitions.ini because i use forced rotation and it messed the app rotation.

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

One problem I have with Mieru on the N9 is that, sometimes, I accidentally tap in the borders and move the comic backward or forward. For example when I'm changing the zoom level.

Would it be possible to implement a next/previous page by swiping from the borders? This could be optional and keep the tapping feature (for those that prefer it) by default.

When you are in full screen, you could disable global swiping in order to use the gestures for page changing, and re-enable it when showing the menu bar.

Ok, why not. :) I have created issue 49 on Github to track this proposal.

BTW, do you have some experience with and/or examples for handling swipe gestures in QML ? :)

Great!

You only need to define a QML Gesture Area and implement onSwipe method (with desired angle) as a trigger to launch the next/previous page action.

Beware that if the are is near the borders, you need to disable global swipe gestures in fullscreen more to avoid the "swipe to menu" feature while you are reading pages. You can reenable it when showing the toolbar. Check this post as an example, although it might be other ways to handle that.

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

Mieru V2.4.1 has been released - to Extras devel !

Yeas, really, up-to-date Mieru is now available directly from Extras devel. :) So please test & report any issues that might come up.

Whats new since last Extras release
Code:

* brand new QML GUI
    * its FAST :)
* proper Unicode support
* touch screen paging
* a What's new dialog
    * launches after significant updates
    * informs about new features & fixes
* manga mode
    * can be enabled in Options
* improved paging feedback
* localization support
    * full Czech, German and Russian translations
* improved donation support
    * Flattr and Bitcoin were added
* new packages for _Maemo@N900_
* many thanks to:
    * Tempura-san (l18n support, German translation, manga mode, paging feedback)
    * ZoG (Russian translation)

To get the new QML GUI, you need to have CSSU installed. If you don't have CSSU installed, Mieru falls back to the old, fully functional, Clutter based GUI.

If no serious issues are reported, I'll also push an updated package to Apps for MeeGo & Nokia/Ovi store, probably after the weekend.

MartinK,

Thanks for keep working on this app.

I think you are mixing up your apps this time :D

Code:

cat /usr/bin/mieru
#!/bin/sh

cd /opt/modrana
python mieru.py -p maemo5

starting /opt/mieru/mieru_fremantle works fine.

screenshots for N9 version? Is it possible for Mieru to remember and load the right page when the chosen file in file manager has same credentials as the one in History?

Oh, thanks ! I was adapting some file from modRana packaging and it looks like I forgot to change this. :) I already pushed a fixed package (2.4.3).

BTW, could someone interested with vanilla PR 1.3 (eq. wotuhout CSSU) check out if the old GUI fallback really works ?

Code:

cd /opt/mieru
python mieru.py -p maemo5 -u hildon

Any you can also try how the QML GUI behaves without CSSU, when you are at it:

Code:

cd /opt/mieru
python mieru.py -p maemo5 -u QML

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

It is starting fine now on Maemo 5.

Can't test without CSSU for you, as I have it installed :(

A small remark about the layout: in portrait mode, info -> about is not centered correctly, making some letters not visible.

No big deal, and I would not bother about it, if fixing means too much of an effort.

Ok, let me explain. For example I was reading One Piece chapter 675.rar till page 10 and decide to read something else, the progress for this file is now in History and I can resume reading using History page. The problem is that if I open this same One Piece chapter 675.rar using builtin file manager Mieru starts showing at page 1 instead 10 like recorded in History. Is there a way to fix this?

Oh, now I know what you mean. I guess it will not be difficult to compare the newly open file, if it already is in history & restore the path. The only question is if this is the expected default behavior. :)

BTW, I'll be away for the weekend. But don't hesitate to post question & feedback, I'll reply as soon as I get back. :)

well, it's what I expect when I open a file as the history page is getting quite long to browse and search. :)

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

I've been testing latest mieru and new version works very fast, the only major problems I've had are when switching back to hildon version

e.g

1. when I set page to custom in QML (I don't know what it does) and then use hildon version, I get this

Code:

/opt/mieru $ python mieru.py -p maemo5 -u hildon
All modules combined 450.00 ms
options: profile path: /home/user/.mieru

  File "mieru.py", line 162, in _loadGUIModule
    self.platform.guiModuleLoaded()
  File "/opt/mieru/platforms/maemo5.py", line 26, in guiModuleLoaded
    self._addAppMenu()
  File "/opt/mieru/platforms/maemo5.py", line 86, in _addAppMenu

  File "/opt/mieru/platforms/maemo5.py", line 153, in _getFittingSelector
    touchSelector.set_active(0,lastUsedValueId)
TypeError: an integer is required

but I fit to width/height or original size, hildon version works again.

2. Paging in hildon version just doesn't work anymore, when I press p I get this:

Code:

/opt/mieru $ python mieru.py -p maemo5 -u hildon
All modules combined 450.00 ms

Mieru quiting

this could mean that non CSSU users have the hildon version broken too, but I only have a CSSU n900 to test with

as for QML specific problem, just minor: I can't access hidden folders (so can't go to .documents) and buttons don't works (but I guess it's designed to be touch only)

other than that, really speedy, the design is very classy and reading comics on this app is very pleasant :)

hi
I've just updated mieru and have a few problems now.
I'm using CSSU Stable

In hildon mode:
-paging doesn't work
-while reading, it becomes unresponsive after a few pages. I have to kill the process.

In qml mode:
-doubletap doesn't work ( and I use it a lot :( showing the toolbar, clicking it, clicking the fit size,choosing it and closing is damn too long )
-keys don't work: uio to change page fitting
-volume keys don't change pages
-It crashes. segmentation fault.

This is a limitation of the QML FolderListModel used in the file selector. Looks like the list of filters for the underlying QDirModel is missing the QDir::Hidden filter to show hidden files.

Recompiling the Qt just for this (and breaking the API in the process) is out of question. One possible solution is to reimplement the FolderListModel implementation in Python, that returns hidden files (and exposes also all the other filters). There would be an added benefit in dropping the dependency for Qt.Labs, that provide the FolderListModel.

Regarding zoom/volume button paging, it seems that the old GTK based method can't be used and I've only found a C++ example so far.

Basically, you first need to "grab" somehow the keys and then you just listen for the F7 and F8 keycodes. Once the "grabbing" is figured out, the listening part is trivial.

I've added click & doubleclick support - it works by clicking the screen middle when screen edges paging is enabled as it would interfere with the default screen-half paging. You can now also configure what actions should be triggered by the click or doubleclick.

Keyboard shortcuts are not yet implemented for the QML version, for volume keys support see above. :)

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

Official Mieru 2.4.6 changelog

Code:

* fix Hildon GUI paging dialog
* fix Hildon GUI not starting with custom page fit mode
* load state from history when opening known manga paths
* history can now be turned ON/OFF
* screen middle click & doubleclick support
 * only active with screen edges paging
 * independent actions for click and doubleclick
 * can be used to activate temporary page fitting modes

Translations
Mieru currently has full Czech & German translations. There are also Russian & Chinese translations that are 85+% complete. Further translations are welcome !

Mieru translation howto
There basically two ways:

Mieru project on Transifex
Mieru has a translation project on Transifex. Looks like the only prerequisite is a registering & logging in to Transifex. I should get notified about translation updates and will pull them to the Mieru source code repository.

*.ts files & Qt Linguist
You can also just grab the *.ts files from Github, translate them with Qt Linguist and send them back to me (or if you are on Github, you can just send a pull request :) ).

Anyway, thanks in advance to any parties or individuals interested in the Mieru translation endeavor ! :)

It happens easily. I don't really know if it's while in background or while switching to another app. Same problem with version 2.4.6

Here is the sequence of event:
1-I open another app. In my case, opera.
2-I open mieru in full screen. and turn a page
3-I show the lower bar
4-I click on the page number to open the menu.
5-I press ctrl+backspace to swith to another app
6-In opera, I scroll up and down.
7-I go back to mieru and turn page
8-repeat 3 to 7 a few times after 30s I get a segfault

Here is more information about the hildon mode becoming unresponsive.

I get a lot of
"under pms threshold stopping"
"edge stopping"
in the console output.

When jumping from one zip file to another,
I sometimes get 2 images overlapping. It freezes in that state. I can't turn pages, I can't scroll.
I can swicth to another app but it takes a lot of time the n900 seems really busy.
see screenshot attached.

@segfaults
I have just uploaded 2.4.7 that might fix the segfaults. So please upgrade and report back. :)

@up-to-date Mieru package for Harmattan
Is available from the the Mieru OBS repository. It should show up at about the same time I submit the package to Fremantle autobuilder and sometimes earlier.

BTW, an updated Ovi store package is already in the QA. :)

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

I found Mieru while looking harmattan apps on transifex and translated it to Finnish language. There are probably some translation errors so I hope that other Finns will also fix those when they notice them.

Link for the Finnish translation on transifex: https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/mieru/language/fi/

Thanks for the great app. Finally I can read Iron Sky comic I bought long time ago :)

Thanks a lot !
:) I've already integrated and released the Finnish translation (together with a Vietnamese one that also surfaced on Transifex) and will do the same for the Dutch one right away ! :)

UPDATE: Looks like someone is working on French translation at this very moment on Transifex. :D

BTW, would someone also be interested in translating the package description ?

Code:

Mieru is a flexible manga and comic book viewer.
NOTE: page turning works by tapping the left or right half of the screen
Mieru supports all common manga and comic book storage formats including
zip and rar archives and plain images in a folder.
* automatic previous/next chapter loading
* history of last open titles
* elegant and touch friendly interface
* pinch zoom support
* reopens on last open page and page region
* rotation lock

Debian packages support localized descriptions as do some repositories (Ovi does, not sure about Apps4MeeGo) so it would definitely come handy. :)

I've created a translation page on the wiki (Czech & simplified Chinese translations are already done) - but just posting it here is also fine. :)

Re: [Announce] Mieru: a flexible manga and comic book reader

I updated the wiki page for dutch.

One question/remark: I added "if supported" in brackets after the pinch zoom support. I did that because I suppose you are referring to a multitouch gesture zoom function? If so, it is not supported on the N900. It could be I misunderstood what you meant by this, than I will change the wiki text again.

Swirl gesture for zooming in Fremantle would be a killer feature.

Good point - you are absolutely correct. Mieru currently supports only the multi-touch pinch zoom, which of course doesn't work on resistive screen and other single-touch devices.

Of course, I'd like to add some other zooming methods that work on single-touch devices in the future. :)

Yep, that would be one possibility - the only problem is that if I'm not mistaken, the swirl zoom detection algorithm is a part of the closed MicroB UI and would have to be reimplemented from scratch.

Other options:
  • on-screen zoom buttons
  • zooming with keyboard keys
  • press the screen for 1 second -> you get some feedback (notification/vibration) -> and then you can move your finger up to zoom in or down to zoom out
