Isn't Smoku the same one that was all upset with Nokia over the PSX stuff?

I sorta went on a 140 character mini-rant about how close-minded and close-mouthed the N950 privileged developers are and how holding their respective projects so close that ultimately they're crafting a truly avoidable but rather idiotic situation of where once they release something, while not building any type of hype nor marketing, they're just going to develop an app for an audience of zero.

It... makes no sense to me. Let me start in on my app. The world is gonna know about it if I want it to get out and be adopted.

Almost like it's the cool thing to have the most esoteric, unpopular application on the most niche OS out there.

Meanwhile, some jerk gets to produce a high-budget movie based on the Battleship board game... and it will be released to a world that DOESN'T WANT IT TO BE RELEASED. ;)

It's around that price for the shipping, Msia to US rather far you know ;)

with forums there's lots of personalities and people in general believe they are correct. the majority of us will act on here as we do in person (mostly) but there will be people who use these tech forums to feel superior, to outshine someone with their abilities of either technical skills, whit, spelling or ability to quote things that sound clever. lots of people have problems with socialising and interacting with people and by arguing or trolling they are getting attention they need. many don't know how to get the communication going with people any other way, or they try and fail and return to just provoking. some are bored and it kills time. some are just plain arrogant and look down on the whole world.

i often dont agree with people or have a different perspective, and there are many times i would love to rub things in and prove someone wrong but it won't get me any satisfaction, and it just makes you look like an arrogant prick. i hate being wrong but i will always accept when i am. i also try to look at things from different angles. part of my job is analysing and figuring things out, looking at things differently. i've been described by the M.D of the company i work for as a strange thinker. i'm supporting people who have spent 5years college doing engineering master degrees and 5-15 years experience with these machines, telling them how to fix things, explaning problems and fixes etc.
Take into account i know no programming languages, have installed and played with linux since early debian and redhat but know next to nothing about using it properly. never been to college, did average in school. i'm a prime target for being looked down on and not being liked by those who have these skills etc.

but as marxian said
Quote:

there is more to the success of a project that the technical attributes
jalyst, the best way to deal with people like that is to not respond as if they insulted you. if you act like you either didn't read it or realise they were being richardheads, then it will annoy them. thread carries on and they can't do anything about it. your enthusiasm and passion invites these from people though. many people are not happy with the n9 so people want an excuse to lash out.

The negative things like destroying, breaking, looking for flaws, hating, putting things or people down or only looking at the bad. All these things are easy, very easy. but they don't provide anything. they just take away. being positive is hard and it is even harder nowadays. but when you look past the flaws like you would your gf/bf/wife/husband/partner/bro/sis/mother/father etc you don't always point out their flaws and miss out on the good?

i'll stop writing as i'm rambling now and i don't proof read what i type cuz i'm lazy haha so woops i i don't make sense.

ps i agree with jalyst and with jnack95. one problem is too many UX's trying to be different. and another is not enough choice. a balance between the 2 would be nice.

actually very nice...

It has all I need for a phone: Good browser, excellent email and messaging, excellent calendar, excellent social media and rss integration, excellent maps and navigation, excellent screen, and of course good phone.

Found some small bugs from Skype app but not too disturbing. I hope those will be fixed soon.

I would almost agree with you except that the context and the curt tone of the reply made it sound more dismissive than constructive--and that seems to be common there.

I actually do. I don't use the phone like most of you guys though... Twitter, Gmail, weather, calendar, some stupid photo effects on a photo I didn't like anyway, maps, Google Voice, a few IM's, Google Analytics, calculator, Evernote and an alarm.

Oh, and wifi tethering... and Pulse.

I'm good. N9 makes it easy to do most of the above, and do it even more simple than my Mango updated Dell Venue Pro - but with much better battery life - and I'm game. If I wanted updates, I still have my Xoom.

Wow. That was actually sad to read.

I just want a simple to use phone. Android is getting a bit too complex, but I'm used to it. I just have to actually concentrate while using it (read: no driving and texting). WP7 is simple as hell, all the stuff is at a glance. And iOS... meh. I had the first 3 iterations of iPhone, don't see myself going back.

That could have been followed up with details or at least a pointer to something constructive itself--If that had been intended as a genuine suggestion and not just a dismissive, mind you.

Damn, that is a lot cheaper than here in the cold north. ~418€ in Malaysia as opposed to 570€ in Finland...

Re: N9 [Shipping]: It's finally here [for some]!

This thread has almost half of this subforum's total posts. It has almost as many posts as the "Software > Design" and "Software > Themes" subforums. It has more posts than the top 2 N900 threads combined. No wonder Jalyst is trying to make people post in other threads...

I wouldn't even be surprised if the whole forum stops working because it operated under the assumption that page numbers could be represented with only 10 bits.

All of this, more demand for the N9 than there is supply, and MeeGo is still dying phoenix style to rise from the ashes as something else. There is something wrong here but I just can't put my finger on it...

First update release is complete, we will be distributing fruits of it to developers soon and end users a bit further down the road.

Improvements are a legion. This is due to the fact that many teams stopped the sales release work already in spring time and set their sights on the first update release. I counted around 3500 improvements (fixes or features) to be in the release.

Sounds like the launch delay was because of hw issue.....

Off topic but I totally agree with Kontorri, I think it would be fantastic to combine Harmattan's swipe ux for home screen/task switcher + WP7's panorama app view....

List of official N9 distribution has been adjusted, Greece cancelled, so you may stop waiting and start importing.

Has "get_iplayer" been made available for the N9 yet?

I know you need to be root to use it, and the Aegis situation could be a problem.

That alone will decide whether i get the N9 or stick with my N900.

Really, I dont think he had one at all, & it seems most others in this thread agree.
He launched straight into a direct attack* in a thread created to inform the wider community about what's proposed, & get their feed-back.

Up until just after my post, many were freely expressing their thoughts/Qns of the proposal, & how that relates to sister F/OSS projects.
And the vast majority of that expression was of a non-technical nature, as that's clearly what the thread's intended for, engaging the wider community.
So I don't see how what I posted was totally out-of-context, or uncalled for, at all.

What was the point of asking him to clarify? It was clearly a direct attack, & totally off-topic.
The only purpose it served, was to "big note" himself in front of others....
It looks like it earned him some slaps on the back too (judging by the thanks he got), so no doubt his pattern of behaviour won't change.
I responded to a offensive post, with an offensive post, tit-for-tat, fair's, fair...

Anyway I'm over it.....
I've come across plenty of people in my time on the internetz that are simply arse-holes, or going through a bad time, for whatever reason.
So there's no point dwelling on such things....

*& yes it was, please don't try to suggest it wasn't.

Not sure on the agreeing part, as his post gathered more thanks than either your original one or your answer to his (for whatever worth this metric is).
Not sure on the direct attack either, he was "freely expressing his thoughts of the proposal", just from the developper side:
  • "people working on their free time do work on whatever they fancy (regardless on what they should do, or what is usefull for other people)"
followed by
  • "But you can try to convince them to fancy working on the same thing"
This is clearly not wrong, neither OT. Although I really find Smoku's communication skills abysmal, your reaction also seemed out of the line for me.

ps: I don't mean to be aggressive or anything, just saying that not everyone agrees on smoku's full responsability on this.

Yes, indeed, the fever to secure the 64GB version took hand over the reason. Faster and (a little) cheaper.
I must say Nokia -and speaking for myself- Nokia is doing a good job in creating artificial shortages to boost sales.

Same strategy was used by HP recently. Especially Pre 3 sold out at reasonable sales prices to people fearing they might not get it.
That said, my Pre 3 is catching dust for the moment together with 2 spare N900
