2 billion reasons not to buy a N800

OK I've nicked Thoufgtfix's 100 million skype users thread but...;)
Serious point is estimated audience for live earth was 2 billion and although it was one of the internet largest audience it was impossible to watch it on N800.
The n800 can do live TV streaming so why not in this instance? Bearing in mind the appliance is sold as Internet table you would expect it to do what it says on the box.
Nokia issued a firmware upgrade couple of days previously so we cant use old technology as an excuse.
So what went wrong and more importantly are Nokia in a position to rectify the situation in the near future?
The concept of the N800 is good but if it main strength and sales promotion is internet use I think it only fair that it has no major failings in its target area.

Quick answer:
Show me a device that does Internet nearly as well as the N800 under $500 and smaller than a subnotebook.

Re: 2 billion reasons not to buy a N800

 Tats only 4 reasons but back to the main point still the n800 kicks a*s with the 329-400$ price tag and its open scource. But Im not going to make a few programs not working turn me against the n800. The only other tthing thats the n800s price in the usa thats comparable is the palm lifedrive. Thats what i came from face it its evolving into a great device with a few minor setbacks get over it dont bash the device.

Re: 2 billion reasons not to buy a N800

Still I can say that the n800 is a great device for the price and what it does. The new firmware has actually in my opinion made the device more useful to me.

Internet Tablet is a vague term like Media Player is. There are many devices that are called media players and do not play every media type.

 Heck.i am surfing the net,on my bed listening to financial advice on the radio function of the n800. All the reasons you list have no effect on me. the firmware upgrade made this device much more user frienddly by fixing the touchscreen.

Like you all I want it to succeed and keep me reading some interesting and informative blogs;) but somewhere along the road someone is going to have to take decision to up feature list or it heading towards cul de sac computing land

I can't yet, but I will very, very soon. The Palm Folio and other "copy cat" phone companion devices will be great. I can do VASTLY(!!!!) more on my windows mobile device than on my n800. Granted the update was decent, but I still cannot view a word document on the n800 (I know . . . . I know - it is not supposed to be for that but I think the "it's an internet tablet" excuse is overdone), cannot use citrix, cannot view www.howardstern.com or www.seamlessweb.com (two sites I look at everyday), cannot stream sirius radio, and there are many, many more. I can do all of these in a second on Windows Mobile devices. The only thing that cuts against my Motorola Q in comparison to my n800 is the quality and size of the n800's screen. Just wait, I hate to say it, but Nokia will be crushed eventually. The n800 is a nifty gadget, the people on this forum are incredibly dedicated and helpful to people like me that have a hard time using the n800, but it will die within about 2 yrs. If the vadeem clie were updated for example, who would want an n800.

All this said, I for one will probably buy the n900 when it comes out :)

I didn't even know of this Live earth business till now. Way to make a statement. Your not going to get the N800 for a stupid *** live stream of bad pop stars. Give me a break. I think the earth will be better off if you don't watch dumb as pop stars thinking they are making the earth better by jumping up and down on stage. Did they walk to the concert to save energy and the environment or drive with huge tour buses. You are trying to save the earth, thats not the way, through pop idols, if anything save it from bad music and live streaming concerts and Mr "Thinks he knows it all" Al Gore. Get a Mac book to watch your concert - i'm sure that'll make your environmental friendly hippies happy.

I do agree that the n800 will probably die in 2 years but really, what is the life cycle of any gadget, computer, cell phone, etc? Even if it's still working by that time their should be new devices with new technology in them like faster cpu or maybe even multi core, faster and higher mem capacity, better and faster UI, etc.

But yes the n800 has some shortcomings now that i'd hope get fixed soon (a2dp & sync) but i knew the n800 didn't have them when i bought the device.

Re: 2 billion reasons not to buy a N800

I am excited about the Linux based Intel MIDs, but am guessing they'd hit the market at the $750 point. It could give an N800 a run for it's money, but would have to go way above and beyond to do so.

The N800 shouldn't die in 2 years. If it can still connect to the internet, play my games, etc, I see no reason not to keep using it. Will others buy the successors? Surely. But unless I get one free, well... :D

God, what a bunch of disingenuous crapola. Nice work buying into the live-like-there's-no-tomorrow oil-only status quo.

The Live Earth event has been all over the news lately. One would have to live in seclusion not to know of it.

As for the view that the artists involved should be Luddites, that's naivete at its worst. Anyone who took the time to shed their cynicism and sarcasm and objectively investigate the event would know that techniques were employed to minimize energy consumption and pollution. Artists interviewed, such as John Mayer, acknowledged the critics but made the valid point that this was an awareness campaign, and that included broadening their own.

Any campaign is going to consume resources, no matter what its goal is. And I have to wonder if you hostile critics are slamming the notion of concerts in general, which definitely consume extraordinary amounts of power, or if you're just hungrily and foolishly scavenging for hypocrisy among the folk who make you uncomfortable by tacitly pointing out your egregious lifestyle.

Something in the conservation movement hit home?

Good. Brace yourselves: it's gathering momentum.

amen Texrat.

I am sick of my fellow hob-nobbing corporate-consumer Americans pissing into their own cup.

News media blabbing on about the "only reason people buy a Prius is because it is vogue" nonsense.....

It all boils down to what each and every person is doing to reduce carbon emissions......acting locally and thinking globally.

Screw big oil pharmaceutical media conglomerate.

Screw the Bush Administration.

...........but I repeat myself.........

Look out, I've modified a quote... This is the main reason I really don't watch tv that much any more. I didn't even know about it till the other day when someone was complaining about not being able to watch it on the nokia. I only watch a couple shows on cable, Mythbusters, techy shows on the discovery channel, and the new yankie workshop, and this old house on pbs on the weekends. Anything else comes off the apple tv or dvd. Unless they're delivering lines in a movie or song, I don't really listen to musicians/movie stars. They all have an agenda, and it's mostly about making them selves look good, or making even more money.
