[Announce] Enhanced lockscreen

This is actually a work in progress, the UI isn't final but it's something I've always wanted :p

v0.2:
http://i53.tinypic.com/302xagz.jpg

Open to suggestions (UI or features), I wanted a slider instead of a button to unlock the device, but the default Qt slider looks crappy at best.

Devs: The package actually contains some system backends (which I plan to add MeeGo/Harmattan support to later on, something like Qt Mobility, but for stuff like the mediaplayer/profiles etc).

Also, I need to add notifications support (missed calls/messages etc.)

It should be in -devel soon (20 minutes max), package name is enhanced-lockscreen.

Me and Venemo are planning a Nokia Bubbles rewrite, just thought I'd say that :p

Any chance of copying the N9's double tap to open as another forum user as just requested?

Good grief. I waited for a long time for someone to make this. You're the best MAG. I demand nokia that they should hand a N950 for you so that meego's future will looks brighter :)

Yes, the hardware is there in the N900 (as joerg_rw or ShadowJK pointed out), it's in the accelerometer (detecting taps, as on the Nokia E66), but the driver doesn't have support for it, and I'm not qualified to write/fix the existing driver.

Re: [Announce] Enhanced lockscreen

MAG, if you manage to make the unlock button a slider and also increase the size of the media player buttons, then it should be possible to control playback "blindly" (with the phone in the pocket for example).

How does that work with a resistive touchscreen? Wouldn't you risk accidental unlocks?

yes, the accelerometer can detect taps and even double taps, but need configuration for the 2 (3) parameters tap direction, tap strength (threshold), (and double tap time distance). The kernel driver in stock maemo kernel doesn't support this afaik, I think it could get augmented for that without breaking the API - could go to powerkernel.

@Mag

I have a request..is it possible to make our N900 unlock screen showup on double tapping...its sucks to do a physical button action to bring up the unlock screen

the enhanced lockscreen looks awesome though..many thanks

Great, I've been waiting for this!
Just add notification support and I'm a VERY happy n900 user :)
(been happy ever since I got it)

Re: [Announce] Enhanced lockscreen

@MAG

suggestion: it would be nice if the play/pause and next/previous buttons are placed a bit more higher from the unlock bar..i end up accidentally pressing the unlock button while trying to change the track..

otherwise its perfect..thanks

Re: [Announce] Enhanced lockscreen

Hell, I wish a single tap on the power button would trigger properly so that this unlock screen was actually useful.

In order to "get around" the issue with the resistive screen detecting false positive taps (while in a pocket or bag), why not poll the proximity sensor before allowing the screen to power on to ensure it's deliberate?

Great work @MohammadAG, just read yor tweet.

Just one comment, shouldn't the clock use regional settings?

Quick launch for camera for e.g. Would be awesome. As well I love that unlock on android where u have half circle u spin one side to unlock and other side to silent mode( btw silent mode option would be nice) and pull down for program of your choice. Does it support portrait?

Re: [Announce] Enhanced lockscreen

Can you style the button so that it's a black, 50% 70% transparent box with text that says "Unlock" or better yet, a customizable text string in gconf.

http://goput.it/hp4.png
Here's my idea! The pause button turns into a play button when the song is paused, and vice versa.
The wallpaper should probably be configurable too ;)
EDIT: The buttons turn blue when you press them, similar to the default Media Player.

EDIT: And oh, double-tapping on the now playing unlocks and goes to the music player. The "Now Playing" bar doesn't appear when there's no music playing. Same goes for the bolded text on notifications, if you double tap the "unread messages" it goes to Conversations while if you double-tap the "missed calls" it goes to the call log.

EDIT2: Notifications!
http://goput.it/2ht.png
MAG, if you're doing this, the notifications bar should probably have a fade in from up animation, similar to the yellow notification bar in Hildon-desktop. Same can be done for the "Unlock", "Date+Time" and "Now Playing" bars if you wake up the phone's screen while locked.

EDIT3: Let's put it all together!
http://goput.it/xw9.png
If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to tell me.

EDIT4: As per the suggestion of merlin1991 on IRC
http://goput.it/wwa.png
Should make it easier to use one-handed while using landscape.

EDIT5: At MAG's request, a lock slider. The text should probably fade out as the slide gets closer, a la iPhone.

@MohammadAG
Perhaps you add lockscreen setting in phone settings so it's more user friendly to change the lockscreen image?

Re: [Announce] Enhanced lockscreen

@Hurrian
The sliding/unlocking button should be placed in slighly higher position.IMHO N900's resistive screen isn't the most responsive at it's edge.

Wow! Something which I've always wanted to see on the N900. Thanks a lot! You're the man!

Just a couple of suggestions:

1.Is it possible to make the clock font look blgger, bolder and prominent like the Android lockscreen?

2. Is it possible to hide the "Now Playing" notification when Media Player is closed and reappear only when Media Player is open? This would add a more polished look. Just my humble opinion.

3. Is it possible to change the default maemo look of the lockscreen and bring in a meegoish or android like theme or like the concept suggested my one of the members here using transparency?

4. It would be cooler if album art was displayed near the Now Playing Notification or even cooler if Album Art would replace half of the Background of the lockscreen while a track is playing.

Please dont feel that its a lot of questions and suggestions. Those were just a few suggestions and you can always ignore them if that isnt your strategy. I just asked as I know you can do anything with Maemo! You're the greatest! :)
Great start with the lockscreen and hoping to see more updates and beautifications. Will we be seeing this in the CSSU? Keep it going!
Thanks again!

Cheers! :)

Thats what I was about to say. The slider looks quite ugly and out of place at the bottom and thats a long way to slide in landscape mode.
I rather prefer MAG's concept of tapping to unlock.

The 3rd EDIT or the 4th EDIT looks better in my opinion. And the clock could have looked bigger and more prominent like in Android for example. Its just a suggestion.

The best part being its MAG's project. So we can see great results when this project matures. :)

I'll never buy another Nokia or the N9 considering where Nokia stands today. But if Nokia would grant MAG an N950 free of cost courtesy of all the work he is doing to keep Maemo alive when they couldnt, I'll consider buying the N9 instead of maybe switching to android if (Hope not) my N900 dies of old age.

Thats what companies should do. Recognise developers. If I remember right Samsung just gifted a Cyanogen developer a free Galaxy S II recently. Hope Nokia notices all that in between their busy relationship with Microsoft.

Like this?

The slider movement isn't so smooth with the horizontal slider, I assume the same will happen with the vertical slider. MAG will probably find a way to fix this though.

IMO, a long press (1 whole second) on the unlock button should be good enough.

Re: [Announce] Enhanced lockscreen

Is it possible to leverage selecting the notification and then unlock in order to launch the relevant application?

Example; Tapping "3 unread messages" would change the text color to indicate it's been selected and after unlocking, Conversations would be given immediate focus.

I also think %ARTIST% - %SONG% might be a better display, or possible to make the variables selectable by the user?

That would be great. Although I think double-tapping would be better, so that we'll avoid "accidental" app launches.

It would be near complete if you could manage to squeeze in a small thumbnail of the album art beside the song playing and also icons beside the Notification events like missed calls & message.

Another suggestion would be to include the name of the contact and a small contact thumbnail for the last 3 events.

cheers! :)

Re: [Announce] Enhanced lockscreen

I go for number 2

I don't think there's too much worry about accidentally having taps cause we still need to press the power button to access that first right? unless by implementing this, tapping on the screen also shows this unlock screen
