Re: [Council] Council_Update-July_2011
Nope? Nothing? Nobody wants to explain the contract's definition of what the "community" is?
|
Re: [Council] Council_Update-July_2011
I suppose that "the community" is that thing, that will become official in late 2012, if it (the "thing") decide that it (the "thing") want to. Then, it will become officially registered organization ;)
Any irony above was *not* put there on purpose. // Edit @ next post - Eh, You know Nokians Execs, everything is top secret there, so we can only suppose. Still, i don't think it's most important thing now... |

Everyone here should just fight Nokia for these damn N950's!
I want one. Dual Core goodness! :D I plan on getting one with my tax return! :D It would be nice if Nokia just gave up some of the closed parts of maemo. They don't need it all! Just release what we need or can we just upgrade maemo to run the newer *.36 kernel and gsm/3g modules out of meego? Make a FrankenMaemo http://icons.iconarchive.com/icons/p...stein-icon.png |

Re: [Council] Council_Update-July_2011
Still, I think that we should focus on things that we can do, instead of wishful thinking what Nokia should do. Sorry, Nokia won't do. To be honest. I think not many will miss them post-2012.
Don't get this post as offense against Nokia workers - I know that MANY great people worked on N900 and Maemo, then on Meego, then some of them remained, released N9 and much be f****n irritated by state of things now on Nokia internals. So, by Nokia/Nokians I mean execs and him-whose-name-should-be-forbidden-and-forgotten ;) Still, we have "things to do". Lets just go ahead, like civilized divorce. It's fine that Nokia invested in Maemo, and released N* tablets and N900. Yea, for long time our relationship was hard/becoming hostile, so lets just say "goodbye", and continue live of *our* project (maemo/meego) without correlations to Nokia, and saying again and again "Nokia this, Nokia that". That's just the past. |

1. Preservation of Value What else of maemo.org do we need to keep? What could be allowed to slip away? For instance, in my view, Brainstorm is an easy first choice for the chopping block. I'm thankful to Nemein for the work they put into the tool, but unless someone has ideas to repurpose it, its value has gone. Talk is Reggie's baby on Reggie's server. Is he interested in continuing his work on the system? For how long? If the Nokia funding goes away, would he take the site back to being ad-supported? Did those ads ever fully pay the bills? From following IRC discussions of Garage, I've gained the impression that the tool is a maintenance headache, and as I understand it, Gitorious is the preferred location for new projects. Are there many still active projects in Garage? Can they, should they be encouraged to move to Gitorious? How difficult is that? The features list for Gitorious doesn't include a bug tracker. If that's correct, that's one clear feature mismatch between the two tools, and how do Gitorious projects handle bug tracking? What about all the mothballed projects in Garage? License permitting, should their code be preserved somewhere if Garage goes away? Neither Extras nor Websites in Bugzilla see much activity anymore. Is it expected that use of the Extras classification will pick up again as community MeeGo Harmattan + Maemo 5 projects get underway? If not, what then? What of MXR? What else? 2. Plan for the Future What is the goal of keeping maemo.org going? Is it simply to maintain resources for a slowly dwindling group of people who continue to use their Maemo devices? (Even without accidental damage and the lure of new devices, we have whitescreen death, fragile USB ports, and SIM card recognition issues depleting our number.) Or is it to attract and provide resources for a new, expanded audience? Do we aim to become a popular, non-official, alternative MeeGo site with a different culture? Do we expand in a different direction, embrace Android, and try to carve out a space among the many sites already catering to Android users? Do we try to become a community serving all mobile device users? Something else? In any case, how do our existing maemo.org services need to change to fit the new goal? What new tools should we offer to attract new users? Who will do the work? How will it all be funded? |
Re: [Council] Council_Update-July_2011
If you want to keep Maemo alive then i suggest more is done to gain the much wanted code from Nokia so to enable more development to take place on Maemo and then make it more appealing, that with MeeGo running alongside should keep interest in this site.
Failure to do this and Maemo will be no longer sadly to say. Development on Maemo is now at an all time low with only a handfull of dev's left doing any work at all. Your last post is the most desperate yet and sad to read. If other handset users are brought onto this site it will just turn into a huge battle i feel. |
