[Announce] Hildon desktop portrait mode

Please keep in mind that this is still work in progress :).

Main features of this modified hildon-desktop are:
- auto-rotation of the desktop
- widgets also rotate
- widget postion is stored separately for portrait and landscape mode
- when you enter portrait mode for the first time, you will probably have to arrange widgets in the way you like it
- each widget added to portrait mode is available also in landscape and vice versa.
- almost forgot about desktop edit mode in portrait :)

If you found a bug, please report it here.

Any suggestions and feedback welcome! :)

Video by F2thaK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP81TshvC0A

Package is based on the latest cssu hildon-desktop package, which means new features like:
- improved task navigator by freemangordon
- do not change from portrait to landscape when device lies on a table by freemangordon
- added configurable saturation for blurless by David Fries
- included transitions.ini in deb configfile to retain user settings by David Fries

After installation remember to reboot system.

Latest version: available as a part of the CSSU

Re: [Announce] Hildon desktop portrait mode

Sounds awesome! Will have to try it right now! :D

EDIT:
Just to be sure: this works without CSSU or is it still needed for this package to work?

Don't know if this is the correct place, I would like to suggest/request an Enhanced Orientation Lock applet, which holds the name of selected programs not to lock in landscape/portrait; i.e. exception for a list of apps.

Example: Not to lock Phone app, calculator, photos and already portrait apps like some player, ncalc etc. to landscape or portrait mode.

Instead those apps are excluded from the locking process.

p.s. sorry for my english.. i'm not a native english speaker.

at this moment, i would like the camera apps, blessn900 and media player should always stay as landscape mode.

That was suggested long time ago. I think it's in development, but I'm not sure. It's popularly known as the "blacklist/whitelist" feature.

I think it's fairly easy to do that but case is default background image size is optimized for landscape. If rotated the background would be cut to middle and there would be black borders at the top and bottom. Or possibly force it to fit to screen but I don't think that would be better.

You need to install this with xterm...

#root
#dpkg -i /file path/package name :)

working great

Re: [Announce] Hildon desktop portrait mode

How about a background widget? Could support two different pictures, goes to the bottom layer of the desktop and detect rotation and turn accordingly. Default background then can be set to black so it wont take any resources, and parallax is set to '1' so the scrolling is continuous.

using filebox is the best way if you dont know the full command...

open filebox...go to where you downloaded the hildon desktop files...once you at that folder press the upper right icon...it will popup some menu...look at bottom left, you will see open terminal here...press it then x-term will open...
once x-term is open then just type this...

dpkg -i hildon-desktop_2.2.142-13_armel.deb

remember enable the root access on filebox first if you want it to works...

It's not possible. It'll break CSSU instalation :).

Re: [Announce] Hildon desktop portrait mode

Couldn't there be two backgrounds images, depending on the orientation??

The same way there are two positions stored for widgets and icons?

that's what we have started to discuss buddy ;)
share your thoughts ;)

eefo 2011-07-16 16:28

Re: [Announce] Hildon desktop portrait mode

taking godofwar's concept further ..
for this purpose we need to measure the portrait desktop's height and width and then to use it as stored positions of widgets and icons

will installing this lead to problems with CSSU-Updates?

I want to try it but I am afraid it will break the CSSU installation, does it backup the current hildon-desktop before replacing it? in case I want to roll back to CSSU version of hildon-desktop

It shouldn't break your CSSU installation. Here's about restoring original CSSU hildon-desktop: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...postcount=4069

have anyone notice that once you install this hildon desktop then you try...

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

on x-term you will found that you need to upgrade this hildon desktop?
is this hildon desktop is not the latests or just this hildon desktop is a down version that what we have before???

the version should be 2.2.142-13, not 2.2.143-13.
I suggest to type:
# dpg -i hild<TAB>
and it will autocomplete the filename.
