to make the installation easy you should put it in /MyDocs and then in xterminal
sudo gainroot (then enter)
then
cd /home/user/MyDocs ( enter )

and then
dpkg -i and exact file name(hildon-desktop ......)

as i read your post you have filebox , just simply copy the file name by pressing rename option ..


and as the OP has updated the version the command will be
dpkg -i hd_18_07_2011.deb

MyDocs IS "N900 only". What you see in the stock N900 file browser and download menu as the "N900" is actually the /home/user/MyDocs directory.

I haven't installed Hildon desktop portrait mode yet, but I think I could design a 3200 x 3200 image, in such a way as the main design will stay roughly in the middle of the screen when desktop rotates, or have a cross like loop to both directions.

I am saying 3200 x 3200 because I assume there are 4 portrait desktops as well right?

its not 3200 x 3200 but it should be 1920 x 800 = 480 x 800 for each portrait desktop wallpaper....

I hate it to be honest as it makes me want to keep my N900 even longer, just when I was thinking about getting a new phone again!!!

The wonderful developers on here make me think that getting a N9 might be worth the gamble even if Elop is not prepared to allow Nokia to fully support it.

I don't think you're right about that but heck, I'll give it a try :D

Actually it's harder than I thought! I've tried combinations, sizes and shapes but I'm afraid tha it can only be done with two different image sets.

You see if the guys can make the background rotate, and in order for it to be loopable in both modes, the result is probably an impossible shape!

e.g. let's say we are in landscape desktop 2 (800x480) and rotate to portrait (480x800) then scroll to desktop 3 in portrait mode and rotate back to landscape. That seems, so far, impossible to achieve with one image set.

I will look more into it tomorrow because I am dead tired and the heat is unbearable ;)

With next update, you'll be able to choose desktops scrolling direction (in portrait mode) - horizontal or vertical :).

Hi arcean, there's no words in any language for your work and this recent portrait mode solution. As many others in this thread, I join them to thenk you and encourage you to go on this track. I really appreciate very very much your development. As warhawk007 said, you are a genious and some thinking heads at Nokia should take note of it. JUST GREAT!! I'm inloved with "my new N900": it becomes competitive again. Can any other model do the same you are and the community is getting with it?

No need to use sudo command if you are running sudo gainroot.
Either use sudo apt-get as normal user, or use apt-get after running sudo gainroot

Perhaps a little late in discussion but this wallpaper works in both portrait and landscape. My current.

@ OP and the community: I cannot thank you enough. From the point when the standard response was "whatever needs to work in portrait works in portrait" to "whatever you want in portrait works in portrait", this has really been a happy journey!

He is conflicting with hildon portraid, cause he is already oriented in portraid mode, than with the phone in portraid mode, he go on the wrong orientation...

Anyone know how to solve this? Or have a better idea in how to quick dial directly in the desktop? :D

This is just great. Thanks for all the developers. Your effort turned my n900 into a far more useful phone.

In that case the wallpaper is an easy task as long as it makes sense in both portrait an landscape.

In other words existing abstract images are perfect :cool:

Amazing work!!! :¬) No probs so far for me, only a request which i think a few have asked for already is an alternative portrait wallpaper.

I guess the best solution is when setting wallpapers if we could choose a cropped portrait section of the same landscape image.

This way you could use a higher resolution source image which is resized for landscape and then a manual crop and resized from the original image for portrait, so theres no loss in image quality

I suppose if you have 8 or 9 desktops thats alot of extra wallpapers to store in memory.

I am using a bunch of solid colour wallpapers, which works really nicely. Does anyone know if there is any way of automatically switching wallpapers at timed intervals or after I unlock the screen so the backgound colour cycles. (actually, just a command to select a wallpaper from the terminal would be fine as then I could script it).

Awesome work by the way - totally revolutionised how I use my phone.

couldn't recover the original hildon-desktop following
sudo apt-get install --reinstall hildon-desktop; killall hildon-desktop
kept getting an error message along the line "file can not be downloaded"

eventually found @
hildon-desktop_2.2.140-1+0m5_armel.deb and downloaded it with microb
install with AppMan returned error thus

exit shell and reboot N900
