I only get the problem of orienation locking to landscape if I swipe to close the app whilst the movie is playing. Otherwise the orientation is opens up as I've previously set it i.e. automatic.

I can confirm that.

Re: cuteTube for Harmattan

I am getting an error: "Cannot play video due to network error" It only started within the last few hours. It only affects Youtube playback, as Daily Motion videos play normally. The regular Youtube web-based service works fine, and Youtube is not down according to a web search. Other videos from Vimeo app are playing normally, too.

I've tried closing and restarting the app, killall cutetube, rebooting several times, switching between cutetube player and other players--nothing works so far. Conky did show Cutetube taking up a bunch of system memory during one trial, and the killall command worked, but the playback issue remained. Any ideas? I will uninstall/reinstall as a next step, but I'm headed to bed now.

I did activate the new Tweak B from N9QuickTweaks that enables screen rotation for QML apps, but I'm not sure there's any relation to the issue.

Any ideas? Is anyone else getting this on Harmattan Cutetube?

EDIT: uninstall/reinstall didn't solve the issue with Youtube playback. I tried repeatedly clicking on a video (as in click, see what happens, click, see what happens, etc.) to investigate. When I did, one of several things would happen: (1) once every 10 trials, the video would play as expected, (2) 2-3 times out ten, the program would crash or freeze (screen non-responsive), (3) 6-7 out of 10 times "Cannot play video due to network error" or "cannot play due to format" or something like that.

Is there still a plan to bring portrait orientation playback to the N9? I read a comment by thedead1440 talking about it--are there any new details on a version with this feature? I would dig it . . .

Yes. The update is currently in the final testing stage. The changelog is:
  • Portrait video playback with access to comments and related videos.
  • cuteTube set as default handler for YouTube/Dailymotion video URLs.
  • Option to set a network proxy.
  • Some minor bug fixes.

Hacker 2013-01-22 10:54

I am still getting some duplicate entries in the event/notification view. I don't have this issue with my Daily Motion account, but I do see it with my Youtube account. What's strange is that the feed starts correctly (with one correct entry) but then starts generating a second, then a third, and even fourth or fifth copy of the original entry.

I tried to run a search on this topic, but came up empty. I know Marxian improved this problem with version 1.4.0, so I did some exploration.

Once I got the duplicate entries, I cleared the Cutetube videos from my event feed using the long press menu. Next, I opened Cutetube, went to both my YouTube and then Daily Motion subscription vids, and rebooted my device with Cutetube still open. After start-up, I reopened Cutetube, went back to both my YouTube and Daily Motion subscription vids, and the correct entries appeared on the event feed. I then closed Cutetube. Even with Cutetube closed, the YouTube entries on my event feed began to duplicate, then triple, and then sometimes even quadruple, until there were four identical entries from Cutetube. I wasn't using Cutetube (the app was closed), but the duplicates kept coming spontaneously.

Is there a terminal command or other approach to fix this? Does anyone else have this issue?

The method used to retrieve videos for the event feed has been overhauled for version 1.5.0. It's been in testing for the last few weeks, and there are no more duplicate entries. :)

The event feed is updated by a separate process, so closing the application does not stop the feed updates. To do this, you need to disable the event feed updates from the Harmattan settings application.

Hacker 2013-01-25 23:37

Update! Version 1.5.0 is now in the Nokia store. Thanks, Marxian.

EDIT: The portrait orientation playback works great. Big win.

Re: cuteTube for Harmattan

while Portrait playback is a welcomed feature, I find it rather "fiddly" for my own usage.

For example, while I am lying down watching a video on landscape, an "accidental" flip on the device made it goes to portrait mode. So if I rotate it back to "landscape", it will be in minimized mode until I press full screen again.

I wished that "full landscape" mode (on video) can be the default viewing behavior until I pressed the "minimize button", then I can go portrait or landscape mode which ever way I want.

slarti 2013-01-27 12:19

I get a crash every time I play a youtube video in portrait, pick the 'related' tab and click on any video.

I agree. Portrait viewing is a welcomed feature, but use cases are too limited to make it the defult behavior.

Fix is on its way to Nokia Store. You can get the fix now by replacing

Code:

/opt/cutetube/qml/harmattan/VideoPlaybackRelatedPage.qml
with the replacement QML file from http://ubuntuone.com/7AY2PHlEwisCqFu3M5gFxb

Root permissions are required.

For the dupicate subscribe, only appear in bottom, if i unsubscribe it, the last 2 will become dupicated.

I've never experienced a duplicate subscription, and the code looks correct. Is 'VideosEngadget' the last subscription in the list? If it is, it might be that the API is showing the wrong value for totalResults in your subscriptions feed (one too many). This will result in cuteTube fetching another page with only the last subscription in it. The totalResults value can get out of sync if a a user's channel is deleted and the change isn't reflected in the API.

The background images are in

Code:

/usr/share/themes/blanco/meegotouch/images/backgrounds
for the 'light' and 'dark (plain)' theme and

Code:

/usr/share/themes/blanco/meegotouch/images/video
for the 'dark' theme.

Can u add vimeo??????

Hacker 2013-01-28 09:09

Thanks, Marxian. I replaced the /opt/ file you provided, and the way Cutetube works for me now is that, if you select a video from a list by pressing the description, it takes you to the info page of the video, but does not play the video. On that page, the related video tab loads data and works as anticipated. The trouble is that if you play a video in either orientation, the related videos button is totally nonresponsive, though the comments button works as it should on that same page. Weird. I did find that, if you got to the working related videos page as descibed above, then the videos would load without crashing.

More not-so-good news: the YouTube event feed issue with duplicating entries is still happening on my device, though I still find the Daily Motion videos on the event feed to be totally free of the duplication error.

I hope that this helps you troubleshoot.

Yes, that's the correct behaviour.

I can't reproduce that. The related videos are working as expected for me. The new file doesn't change very much (just one line of code). The behaviour should be exactly the same as before, aside from fixing the crashing.

I'm struggling to explain that. I haven't had any duplicates in the last few weeks of testing. When the video feed is retrieved, the current date/time is stored and this date/time is used for the next request, so if the feed is first retrieved at 12:00, the next time the feed is retrieved, the server will be asked to return only videos uploaded after 12:00. Can you tell me which country/timezone you are in?

Re: cuteTube for Harmattan

Integrated cutetube player is quite cpu intensive as if the dsp is not used. Just wondering since playing a minimized video with OVP didn't bring the device to a standstill. Also, while playing a video in portrait, there is quite the lag when scrolling the comments.

Hacker 2013-01-28 22:38

Thanks for prompt reply. I'm in Houston, TX, USA, which is central standard time.
Given what you've said, I'm beginning to wonder if my unstable version of FasterN9 may be playing a role in the event feed duplication issue, because it does cause some small issues with 'refreshing' different apps, causing them to re-label already read text messages as being 'unread'. Maybe it's screwing with the cutetube file used to update the event feed. I'll try different setups.

As for the related videos, I'll just wait for the store update, since I can access the info on the first info page. Thanks for checking this out.

cuteTube uses the same API as OVP, so it should use the same number of CPU cycles to play the same video. The backend used is gstreamer (I don't have any control over this).

Scrolling will be affected whilst the video is playing, as the video playback is using up CPU cycles. There's no way to avoid that, other than to remove the feature. That's the approach that Nokia themselves took with the stock player by not allowing video playback to continue when the application is minimized. They took the view that it's better to maintain performance and avoid user complaints of 'lag'. The only way to have your cake and eat it is to throw more hardware at the problem.

I have taken a small step to reduce the number of CPU cycles used when cuteTube is minimized during playback. The progress bar and position label are now updated less frequently (every 10 seconds, like the stock music player). It doesn't make a huge difference, but it's better than nothing. The change is included in the update that is awaiting QA approval.

Thanks. In the meantime, I'll do some additional testing with different timezones, to ensure that this is not affecting the fetching of results.

I'm sensing a mix-up about how the related videos behave. In the video playback screen, tapping on a related video results in that video being played, rather than taking you to the info screen. The info can be viewed by tapping on the 'Info' tab, which will be refreshed to show the info of the currently playing video. If you press and hold a related video, you can choose either to play it or add it to the queue.

An issue with the Store client, I think. I have only made small changes to the QML code (fix crashing problem, enable reply to comments in video playback, reduce updating of progress bar when minimized). Nothing that could affect the installation procedure. s/installing/uninstalling ?

Marxian , I noticed that the buttons "i like " and " unlike" do not work. For example, when I click the button it seems that the counter has incremented a number(1876+1=1877), however, if I go out and I go back to the page number as the first (1876).

Of course, but for a normal user without terminal, that has purchased the app in the store is required to reboot. In such case, this issue should be fixed.

I'm unable to reproduce this on my device: http://youtu.be/tI8nP7obVMQ

It seems that something on your device is preventing the process from being terminated when you attempt to close the application.

The reason you are still able to launch the application from the terminal is because the command is different. When launching from the desktop file, cuteTube is launched via /usr/bin/invoker with the --single-instance (or -s) option enabled:

Code:

/usr/bin/invoker --type=d -s --splash=/opt/cutetube/resources/splash-app.png --splash-landscape=/opt/cutetube/resources/splash-app-landscape.png  /opt/cutetube/bin/cutetube
This ensures that, if there is an instance of cuteTube running, that the top-level window of that instance is activated when the user taps the desktop icon. Executing the binary from the command line will create a new instance regardless.

The like/dislike action works, but the change is not currently propagated to the item in the list. If you back out of the list and reload it, you should see the incremented counter. Also, if you have previously 'liked' a video, and attempt to 'like' it again, the API does not return an error, so cuteTube will respond accordingly by confirming the 'like' and incrementing the counter. However, the additional 'like' will not permanently be added by the API, so if you view the video some time later, the 'like' counter will have return to it's previous value.

Thanks for the thorough response. I have been opening and closing the app now 20 times in a row and I can't reproduce it either. However, it happens randomly. Let's say I open the app and watch a couple of videos and close the app. It opens again with no issues and I watch couple more videos. This time however, when I close and try to open the app again it doesn't open.

I have no clue what the issue could be.

The app not closing is an old bug that is hard to reproduce at times no matter how hard you try but when you don't expect it then it'll pop-up :D
