[USA] Interesting New T-Mobile Unlimited Family Plans

The new "limited-time" plans are more interesting for family plans with more than two lines imo, but the short of it is as follows:

- First two lines are unlimited voice, text, data for $49.99/mo per line
- Next three lines are $15/mo per line for unlimited text and data, but limited to 500 whenever minutes (still unlimited nights and weekends)

The T-Mobile deals site details the options like dropping $20/month off the total bill if 1000 whenever minutes would do for the family or knock $10/mo off each of the add-on lines (so $5/mo for them) if the kids don't need data...

The catch is that it requires a two year contract but doesn't include a phone. However, everyone here would bring their own anyways, and with the AT&T acquisition of T-Mobile looming over us, a two year contract might actually work to our benefit... If any of you aren't on T-Mobile and getting your 3.5g speeds, you should look into it.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with T-Mobile. I just think it's a pretty decent deal (though personally, my currently plan with them is still slightly cheaper for my needs).

Re: [USA] Interesting New T-Mobile Unlimited Family Plans

I think I'll stick to my $15 a month Tmobile plan and pay $1.50 a day for an Internet day pass on the rare days that I plan to be away from my WiFi. Two years is an awfully long committment in this time of quick-changing technology.

I don't think the merger will go thru.

Because Romania is poor country

The phone and unlimited voice subscription * was already offered as a gift.

I have the old $10 unlimited data plan which gets throttled after 5GBs on T-mobile. Be careful with this one though I heard this plan get throttled after only 2GBs supposedly.

It actually says so clearly on that advertisement page.

If that's true, the current deal is basically the same as what you have. Broken down, the costs per line are :

- unlimited data is $10/mo @ 2GB throttle
- unlimited text is ~$5/mo
- unlimited voice is ~$20/mo

Depending on what you want, you can get some freebies. For example:
- unlimited text on the first two lines gets you unlimited text on the additional lines
- unlimited voice on the first two lines gets you 500 minutes on the additional lines

Re: [USA] Interesting New T-Mobile Unlimited Family Plans

I checked into a T-mobile store yesterday to see how this worked and what it would cost me in the end to switch over from my current plan for my 4 lines. Just to get data and smsīs onto 2/4 lines.

I was also considering adding a second line for myself, for a total of 5 lines.

T-mobile wanted a "plan migration fee" of $150 per existing line for changing over to that above plan, so I politely said hell no.

If they donīt want an extra $40/month from me than thatīs fine by me. :)

Yeah, I read somewhere that if you are in contract already, they would charge you. Depending how far along you are in the current contract, they are charging up to $200. Apparently, some people have had success in making a stink about it though and having the fee waived.

Re: [USA] Interesting New T-Mobile Unlimited Family Plans

Would be nice to actually have some competition between carriers in the US.
For example, Virgin Mobile (Sprint) has a pretty nice prepaid offer: 300 minutes, unlimited SMS, unlimited data (but with throttling after a certain traffic) for 35 bucks a month. It used to be 25 a month, but in the spirit of US wireless carriers, they increased it by 10 bucks just because.
So T-mobile should do something similar, maybe even cheaper (I think Sprint has more coverage, no?).

Re: [USA] Interesting New T-Mobile Unlimited Family Plans

I am keeping my plan:
1000 minutes talk time: $39.99
500 text messages: $2.99
Unlimited data: $5.99

Isn't AT&T buying T-Mobile? Why the hek at are they computing with them again anyway?

jschan 2011-08-06 02:53

Re: [USA] Interesting New T-Mobile Unlimited Family Plans

T-Mobile's major competitors are Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. The campaign is a direct competition to their plans, showing the equivalent plans are between $420 to $480 more per line per year. I know it's not as cheap as you might want, but there is competition.

I'm hoping the AT&T/T-Mobile merger doesn't go through specifically because of the competition in place. I like T-Mobile but hate AT&T with a passion.

jschan 2011-08-06 02:55

Re: [USA] Interesting New T-Mobile Unlimited Family Plans

Until the merger ( or is it acquisition?) is approved, it's competition as usual.

The unlimited text and 10 cents a minute prepaid plan. I have this plan and it's great value if you text a lot but don't talk much.

The bottom one on the attached screen shot. 10 cents a minute for phone calls, free unlimited text messages, $1.50 a day for Internet.

Re: [USA] Interesting New T-Mobile Unlimited Family Plans

T-Mobile seems to have put the N900 in a corner.

If you try to change plans, it asks which phone you have, & does not list the N900. If you then select "I don't have a T-Mobile phone", you get a message that you can't change plans if you don't have a T-Mobile phone.

I'd really like to get the day-pass data rate. Right now, I'm on the pay-per-MB mobile web data rate of $1.99 per MB, which is even more insulting considering that 4g isn't available in the area.

They just support phones they don't carry well on their website. You should try calling in, but if they ask, don't tell them you have a smart phone but that it can use data.

Just tell them you have a Nokia 6301 or any other dumbphone. It ainīt harder than that.

Re: [USA] Interesting New T-Mobile Unlimited Family Plans

1. What benefits are there in staying with T-Mobile until the merger? I was thinking about switching to the AT&T $10 1000 text plan with 10 cents a minute for better service, but would rather keep my $15 unlimited text plan for the value (I'm capable of going over 1000 texts). One benefit is 3G speeds.

2. Will AT&T continue to honor T-Mobile plans after the merger for those who had it? AT&T currently has a $20 unlimited text plan but that's more expensive.

3. Once the merger is complete, will the N900 be able to get 3G on the AT&T network?

No. AT&T has stated that following the merger, they'll be turning off 3G to T-Mobile phones so they can repurpose that band for LTE. Owners of T-Mobile 3G phones will be encouraged to "upgrade" to new AT&T phones.

I wonder if the N9 will be able to take advantage of the new AT&t $60 unlimited prepaid plan (unlimited talk, text and data), they say only works with feature phones

Re: [USA] Interesting New T-Mobile Unlimited Family Plans

You may have to pick up a feature phone and use it for the config, and potentially change your N9's useragent to the same as your featurephone.

On the N900, at least, that's easily doable. I don't know about the N9.

Be careful with that plan as GoPhone SIMs lock to the phone in which they are activated. Also, according to AT&T customer service, all GoPhone phone + SIM kits ordered from att.com come already locked. The locks automatically break after six months, but that's a long time to wait to use a better phone.

Sushhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
I have been using the walmart straight talk on my n900 for a while and works superbly, tried the sim on my friends new iphone 4 (amazingly it activated thru itunes ), so certain that the N9 would work if I ever can get one.
Shhhhhh.

And I use a GoPhone SIM in my N900, N950, and Blackberry 9700. I purchased the SIM on eBay and activated it in my N900 though. The SIM may have been locked to my N900 for the first six months; I couldn't tell. I didn't have any other GSM phones during that time.

I'm just warning people what might happen if they activate a GoPhone SIM in a cheap feature phone and then try putting the SIM in an N9. Finding the SIM had locked to an unwanted phone would be a let down.

More on topic, I rather wish T-Mobile would stay independent, as I like the direction they've been heading with their plans. If they'd offer similar deals with far fewer minutes--and establish a new roaming agreement with AT&T--I might just be convinced to sign two years of my life away.

ohh ok I get your point now, I myself was with Tmobile for a very long time worked for them too. I moved to a rural america and I just could not justify myself paying tmobile about 25dollars for a gprs connection(they did not even have the edge) while att or its subsidies were offering 3g. I would go back to them once they flip the switch for 3g on the places I work and play.

I highly doubt they can lock your phone just by inserting their SIM..

I'm not saying the phone locks. I'm saying that according to numerous online sources and AT&T's customer service itself, GoPhone SIMs lock to the phone in which they are activated. The activating phone will continue to work with other SIMs, but the GoPhone SIM will work only in that phone for six months.

I completely agree with you, the even more plans they had for a while were affordable plans for those that text but dont make many calls. Basically, exactly what I would like to see more from other carriers.

Why would they do that? I mean, what if your phone break and you want to switch the phone? If it doesn't work, they will end up with a pissed customer and lost money.

I just got a family plan for 4, unlimited minutes on the first two lines (women in the family), and 500 per line for remaining two, unlimited text, and 200 Mb of data on each line for $130. I think that is pretty good. I did have to go from month to month to their 2 year contract. No changeover fees, perhaps because I was month to month
