getting files from bricked n900

i was wondering. is there a way to get my files from my bricked n900 without reflashing it? my phone is still under warranty and im planning on claming the warranty from nokia. so i dont want to touch anything else because im a total noob. and i just got this phone 2 weeks ago. so i dont want to mess things up further. i just want to get the videos and photos of my son. because i have captured many priceless moments with him using this phone. any help would be appreciated. and yes i researched first (without luck) before making this thread thanks.

Yoiu could've done that if you had backupmenu installed...
Or, reflash the FIASCO image only, this shall keep your mass memory untouched.

How did you brick your phone after only having it for 2 weeks?

I've had mine for 7 months, installed quite a lot (some from Devel), not done any major tweaks or X Term stuff and haven't needed to re-flash yet. *Touchwood*

don't forget that this phone is very user unfriendly, unless you are really used to n900 and linux generally. well, my unit wasn't bricked, but became really slow and unstable and i didn't mess with terminal at all, just installing apps from manager.. i gave up for few months, now it had it's own comeback and i'm using it mostly as car handheld - gps, gaming, music streaming, browser etc..

That is because the device only has 256mb ram and not enough to run many apps at once.

@supermikoman
Do as ammyt said, that's what I did. But if you'll be doing that I don't think you'll have to send it to Nokia, just complete the reflash AFTER getting your files.

@JamesBond@ge
I "bricked" mine in two weeks too. :) And that led me here. hehe

Re: getting files from bricked n900

I got my N900 second hand, so it wasnt brand new, and it went completely crazy on the next day after purchase. In the shop they must have only flashed FIASCO because everything was left on the phone i.e. pics, contacts, recordings, everything... so then I didnt know what to do and somehow I ended up here on maemo.org and flashed it, and its been perfect ever since.

ps. I think I even read a thread about a man who bricked his N900 and then somehow flashed it and got it to work again. :cool: (thats the N900 for ya :p )

Anyways, hope you get you pics and vids off it. Let us know if you succeed.

Csaba

I'd say careless and clueless. In my case, at least. hehe
I was playing dare-"devel" with my phone, pushing on despite the warnings. hehe

I found some apps do not shut down properly and actually still run in the background obviously hogging vital ram, one of the reasons i am very carefull before i install anything from the download section and certainly if it does not have enough of a writeup for field testing i will not use.

Re: getting files from bricked n900

By the way there is no such thing as a "bricked" N900 unless it has sustained component damage ;).

Re: getting files from bricked n900

I think after 2 weeks I couldn't install anything anymore, always missing depencies. The problem was some important library installed by default was gone :P Just reflashed it, becuz I wanted a clean install, also I had to reflash again because backupmenu didn't restore very well and I couldn't boot anything anymore so again a reflash ;)

Still I am happy about this phone and got it since I registerd here :P

yep. i know that my n900 is not bricked. but "BRICKED" is what they call it. i only used the term bricked so that i can make this thread. what do you think we can call our malfunctioning n900? semi bricked perhaps? after all its useless in its current state. but its only temporary. what do you think guys? should we call it semi bricked? haha. a little off topic. lol
