Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

I have been happily using my n900 for more than a year with Vodafone Spain with the only common problems of lack of flash 10 and apps.

Last week I got a new Android phone with Vodafone, and I want to use my n900 with a Yoigo sim card, but I can't call/receive calls!

I have tried both GSM and 3G networks, with no success, here are the errors I get:

3G - Call not established
GSM - Connection error

The guy who sold me the device (brand new) told me it was sim unlocked, and when I boot the phone and insert the pin I don't get any unsuported sim/network error, so I suppose that's not the problem.

Is there any way to check for sure if maybe it is sim locked?

Are there any logs to debug this issue? I'm not a linux newbie and I'm comfortable with console and scripting.

Thank you

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

With the lack of any errors the problem more than likely is with the carrier and not your N900. It might be that they've linked the IMSI with the IMEI of the handset at their end - this sort of assumes you got the Yoigo SIM as part of a contract phone, though if not, I'd give them a call and ask what the situation is.

Does the Yoigo card work in your android phone?

I don't think there is such a thing as a carrier locked N900 or is there?

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

Thanks for the answers.

It is quite strange, the Yoigo sim works perfectly in any other unlocked phone... not in the Android phone, as it is Vodafone simlocked.

But I don't have any other different carrier sim to try into the n900... that's my next step.

Aren't there any logs to see the exact problem? Maybe I can enable phone system debugging somehow? That's one of the main GPL advantages, you have tons of logs available, but maybe the phone packages are kept closed by Nokia?

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

I don't know of any specific log file where network status is stored, unfortunately there isn't a whole lot of access to the baseband stuff, though you could install netmon (apt-get install netmon) and check the cell info screen to see if anything stands out on there.

Edit: Just wondering, do you know which firmware version you have? There are some operator and country specific versions floating around, not that this really matters a whole lot since I've never heard of an N900 being locked to a specific carrier so any sim should work in any N900.

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

Hi dchky, thanks for your interest!

I flashed the CSSU firmware a few months ago. It is working fine, excluding calls with this Yoigo sim. I had uboot and Meego, but right now I'm installing multiboot and Nitdroid, there have been some advances in the last few months, which I want to test.

I installed netmon (thanks for the tip) and it seems ok, see screenshots.

I must tell you Yoigo uses Movistar network on GSM, this roaming is normal.

If I use the Yoigo card in my Nokia 5800 XM, it works great in GSM and 3G.

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

One more note, Yoigo had very cheap n900 a few months ago (50€), so there shouldn't be any weird hardware incompatibility.
But this n900 wasn't from Yoigo, it was previous to that offer, I paid 300€ for mine :-( those 32gigs deserved it.

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

Hi guys,

I have some more information, so maybe someone can tell me what my problem is.
I have installed and enabled sysklogd, and now I can see the logs.

I have community firmware installed. I think I'll try to go back to Nokia's firmware if I can't make it work.

I am in 3G network, and I try to make a call. This is the log:

Does sending/receiving SMSs work?
Can you connect to internet via GPRS and/or 3G?

Check also in settings - phone and see what options you have there, especially network selection (automatic?), data roaming (should be yes as you are always roaming apparently).

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

Hi reinob, thanks for your interest!

SMSs do not work, they stay in the outbox forever.
If I call from another phone, the n900 doesn't even ring, but I get the missed call notice!!
GPRS and/or 3G - I haven't tried yet, I need to speak with Yoigo support/search the web to configure the APNs, you need to do it manually.

I have tried different options in settings/phone with same results, no matter which roaming/network options I chose.

I also reflashed FIASCO and eMMC images with latest Nokia release, but the problem is still there, I can't use Yoigo SIMs.

Yesterday I tried a different operator (Orange) SIM, and it worked perfectly. And I suppose Movistar SIMs will work as well, I'll try one as soon as I can.

I have called Nokia support in Spain, and they told me it might be a incompatibility with the SIM card, and to try a different capacity one in a Yoigo store (64k, 128k, but not 256k, that's what he told meż?).
I have tried this morning 3 different yoigo SIMs at a store without success. And the capacity of the card is not specified on it, they told me all the SIMs are exactly the same type.

In Yoigo technical support, they told me that the phone is not properly unlocked for Yoigo, just for the main operators. I tried to explain that this phone is not locked at all, it can't be locked, but this seems a dead end too.

I'd hate to retire my beloved n900, but it seems I don't have much choice, as I need to stay in Yoigo for nearly one more year, as they gave me a n900 a few months ago (I sold that one, crap!)

If anyone can give me a solution I would be eternally grateful.
If you need logs, or want me to try any crazy stuff, please msg me.

Community is my only hope here...

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

Well, if the Yoigo SIM card works on other phones, and your N900 works with other SIM cards.. one thing that *might* explain it would be if the Yoigo SIM card for some reason needs a terminal (= phone) that supports the SIM Application Toolkit.

All phones support that, except the N900 (because it's not a phone :).

The Toolkit is supposed to be only for "value-added services", but who knows what Yoigo may be doing/needing.

In any case, sorry for this suggestion: if I'm right, there's nothing you can do. If I'm wrong, you still need to identify the problem. Best of all: I have no idea how to check if I'm right or wrong :)

Good luck!

reinob 2011-08-22 08:53

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

PS: perhaps you could try installing Meego and see what happens there.

If it works, you could rule out a problem with the N900 itself.. which would maybe point towards the SIM toolkit (I'm not sure, but I think/hope that Meego has that).

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

Hey Ramoncio!

Did you finally get to test your non-yoigo-working n900 with a different network operator sim card?

I see you reflashed the unit completely. Do you know any other friend with a yoigo simcard that could try starting the phone with his? Maybe a faulty SIM card could cause this strange n900 compatibility issue.

Good luck!

I'm not sure if this can be the cause becuase as ramoncio said Yoigo itself offered nokia n900s some time ago as part of their catalogue.

Hello Ramoncio,

i've looking at some other topic related posts over the internet, when I came across this:

http://tabulacrypticum.wordpress.com...ng-live-maemo/

Specially comments by thegman and close.

They were talking about n900s with problems to register sim cards, and that they solved it by using some paper folded between the camera and the sim card. It seems you are not alone, good luck!

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

Hi iTor, big thanks for your interest, I thought this thead had fallen into a deep pit. :)

Sorry reinob, I didn't get your last answers, and I thought this was a dead end.

I still haven't solved my problem, so I'm using an ancient Nokia 3120 until I can fix this.

My n900 works with Movistar, Vodafone and Orange, but it doesn't work with Yoigo SIMs, I have tried 4 different SIMs with no joy.

I have contacted Nokia Care in Spain this morning, and I've been speaking with a very nice agent (thanks Carlos) who has plenty of N900's for testing, so I think he'll eventually come up with a solution, so I just sent him a link to this thread.

I don't think this might be related to the sim reader, as I get no errors during PIN verification nor network registration, and netmon correctly displays the registered network, both in GSM and 3G, but I'll have a look at those links anyway, thanks for pointing them out.

I'll update this if I ever find a solution, I still haven't lost my hope.

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

One more note: when trying to receive a call with the Yoigo SIM, the phone doesn't ring at all, nor display any message, but I get the missed call in the call log!!

And when I'm on GSM the caller gets the voice prompt: "Movistar info: this option is not available" , Yoigo uses Movistar network in GSM, as I already commented. This is quite weird, as callers might think I am a Movistar customer, but I'm not.

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

your problem is nothing to do with your devices but your Yoigo SIM....
perhaps your Yoigo SIM networks is not compatible with n900.....
remember n900 compatible networks is....

2G networks : GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G networks : HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100

anything beyond that than it will not work on your n900....also 64k,128k & 256k SIM does have it differents....

ramoncio 2011-09-15 14:01

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

Hi pusak gaoq, thanks for your answer!

But I'm afraid my problem has something to do with hardware, at least that's what the Nokia Care guy told me this morning, as he had two n900 working with Yoigo sims in his lab.

At the Yoigo shop, they told me they were positive that Yoigo doesn't have different capacity sim cads, they all are exactly the same. At least there is no sign of capacity on the sim, as I've seen in some others: 64k, 128k, 256k...

And if you read my last post, I commented that I tried 4 different Yoigo sim cards without success, and my sim works ok with another phone, so this should rule out any problems with my sim, and the other 3 Yoigo sims I have tried.

Last curious note:
- Data connection works in 3g with my Yoigo SIM!!!!

I hadn't tried that as I had to search Google and add the APN manually (curious, the Nokia Care guy told me that in his n900 this was configured automatically, but not in mine) and I never imagined data connection could work, since calls and sms don't.

This looks as a radio stack problem, but I've read that this should be fixed reflashing the phone with latest firmware, as it contains the radio.

I'm going to send it to a Nokia Service Center, as I've been suggested this morning by the Nokia support guy. Too bad, I would like to know what the exact problem is, but I'm afraid they will reflash it, test it, and replace it for another one, so I'll never know what the heck happened with my first n900.

Next monday I will ask around the office to see if someone has a Yoigo SIM. If I find someone that has one, I will give it a try with my N900 and see what happens...

I will report back.

I'd like to close this thread with a last update.
I sent it back to Nokia for the second time (the first time they didn't do anything at all, and sent it back as it was) and they told me that it was IMEI blocked by Yoigo, or something like that, as if it was (maybe) stolen!
It might, as I got it from eBay from a guy from Benidorm.

@ramoncio,

Wow. Sorry about that!

I'm not sure if it's possible at all to modify your IMEI by software. If so, you could buy a cheap Nokia, reprogram your N900 with the new Nokia's IMEI and then bin the cheap Nokia.

Re: Problems to make calls. Is there any log to look at?

I have some old nokias in a drawer, I didn't think about changing the imei, good idea.

But don't be worried for me reinob. Last month I changed to a new phone provider (Jazztel movil), and now the N900 works fine. :)

In fact I've been even thinking about the option of using it as my main phone and sell my SGS2, which I've been using as main phone for nearly a year, as my n900 didn't work with Yoigo.
But there are a few deal breakers that are keeping me from that:
- Teamviewer - more router friendly than vnc
- Whatsapp - most of my friends use it. I'm trying yappari now, but it doesn't seem to register.
- Viber - a few very good friends use it
- UFC.tv - I like MMA :)
- Lack of app development, compared with other big ecosystems. What happened with alien dalvik?!?!
- Nice big super amoled screen
- power and speed

So I think I'll keep them both, SGS2 as main phone and the n900 for work, as a small laptop with 3G/wifi data connection to my linux servers.
And my next phone will have hdmi, so I can use it with ubuntu for android. http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android
Maybe Sony Xperia acro S, rugged but very nice.

By the way thanks for keeping up with the thread!
