Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
According to the election timetable, there are only two days left (until 23:59 UTC on September 15) to make nominations for the next term of the Maemo Community Council. There have been just two nominations too far. To nominate yourself (or someone else), please send a declaration email to maemo-community@maemo.org.
This may be an important election and council term. There will be a referendum that authorizes future councils to change the governance structure of the maemo community. |
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
Only two?!?
Comeone guys, make nominations (or nominate youself), SD69 is absolutely right, these are important elections. |
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
@SD69 - so, with only two nominations, what is the procedure?
|
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
Seeing that there were not enough nominations I tried to nominate myself at the last moment. But the only mail account I have set up on the N900 is not the one I have registered here so the mail awaits moderation. I hope it is not too late.
As I say in the mail, I don't feel I will have the time required to give as much as I would want to maemo.org, but seeing there are not enough nominees any combination of efforts is towards the better. I surely don't want to take the place of anybody who wants to devote his efforts for this community. |
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
BTW i've tried to find a list of candidates so far and failed. Do you know if such list exists and where?
|
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
i just checked the relevant messages here,
http://lists.maemo.org/pipermail/mae...r/subject.html and saw that near the closing SD69 nominated himself because the candidates were only two. The strange thing is I never got a reply to my email (that it was accepted as not spam) |
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
I would have hoped that every person complaining about the council would have run, to do better...
|
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
I really don't get it, lots of members posting for maemo future and only few nominations. Why is that, shyness, laziness or what?

Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
Hi,
I want to confirm my nomination by Rob Bauer for the Council Elections. The brief introduction follows: I am 33 years, old, married, have two kids, and are currently located in Belgrade, Serbia. My professional occupation keeps me the world of propitiatory software development and have no commercial interests in maemo. I have experience with Embedded Linux development of arm based devices, but my main expertise is security and cryptography. I have mixed feelings about Nokia's behaviour in the past, but overall I don't regret buying and owning 770 and N810. I've will try to summarise the reasons for accepting nomination. As we all know Nokia has decided to focus its corporate politics on partnership with big corporations such as Intel and Microsoft. The relationship with Intel has shifted the company support to meego, and much of the community contributors, have moved in that direction. At the time, it looked as next logical evolution step for this project. We are still eagerly awaiting to see the results of this direction. In February, another significant event occurred: Nokia has decided to completely change its corporate and product strategy with partnership with Microsoft. The composition of the above events caused/will cause maemo.org to loose its primary supporter - Nokia, which used to provide funding, infrastructure, software and hardware development. During the last month it was confirmed that Nokia funding of maemo.org and infrastructure will end at the end 2012, causing a widely debated "The End is Coming: What do we do next?" debate. Some have argued that the most prudent way is simply to let the nature do its work. Some have argued that we still have time. Some have argued that we need an instant action. Each group of opinions have valid points. I've belong to the third group, and have accepted the nomination out of stubborn determination to just let things go down. I think maemo and its community deserve to survive. In order to achieve that we can not afford to wait and see if Nokia decides to reverses its decisions. Before the end, we have to workable plan, that can be fully put in effect, once the Nokia completely pulls out. This plan should cover funding, infrastructure, software maintenance for existing hardware and future project goals such as introduction of a new hardware and cooperation with other free software communities. I am very happy to see project such as Cordia HD going forward and the initiative they have in providing alternative hardware platform. I hope more community members will find the motivation to help this project, instead of useless arguing for the sake of arguing. Best regards, Momcilo Majic |
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
Based on what was posted at maemo-community@maemo.org, the candidates are:

Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
Oh, crap, I didn't see this thread until today. Are the nominations still open? If so, I would like to nominate myself too. Is it still possible?

Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
Yeah, bloody spam. I am willing to bet this was the reason for the low number of nominations. Maybe an extension of the nominatino period is warranted?

Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
I would like it if I nominate myself. I have loved this community from the first day and I love my N900 too. I do have my own opinions about maemo.org and the ecosystem on whole, however I feel I am too young and inexperienced. Council member sounds like it involves a lot of politics. I feel politics are not my thing though :/

Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
less nominations number is mainly due to meego community ,people were meant to serve both maemo and meego but most of our Mods been shifting /planning to shift towards the new arrivals ( meego & win 7 ),i will not go into details.Anyway ! i would have nominated myself if i was too famous for that job ..besides my love for maemo/maemo community is undoubtedly immense .
lets set Go Council !!! Be a new future !!! |
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
AFAIK if we don't have enough candidates by the end of the period, it is automatically extended.
@Texrat - please clarify on the above. |
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
http://wiki.maemo.org/Community_Coun...ection_process
The period is only extended if we have less than 3 candidates. With 3, all of them are appointed to the council. With 4 (not sure whether sjgadsby accepted the nomination) we will have a vote to elect a 3-member council. |
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
I remember from somewhere that Texrat would nominate himself under certain circumstances, can't remember what... did he make it?
I would have wanted ejasmudar, Estel, and prankster in the Council. I don't have Karma points so can't really nominate. (wait... I got 3, just checked it and linked TMO account to maemo.org, dunno how much more I'll get.) |

Yes, it is just that some of us just decided to go for it just because there was not enough participation. 5 people are always better than three

Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
I was very surprised (and ashamed a little, really) to read that some people would like to see me as Council candidate. Excuse me, if I have not stand for some expectations - I though (and still think) that there are many much more appropriate people to do it.
It was even more shock, to see today how few candidates we have, and how people decide to nominate themselves just to give Community a choice. Yea, Texrat is perfectly right, that there was a time - just judging on all "future" threads, it was out of my assumptions scope, that there will be less than 10 skilled candidates. Especially, that beyond nominating Yourself (which form I don't really like, honestly) there was an option to nominate someone else. By the way, my assuming fail may prove by itself, that I'm not right person to candidate ;) Although I respect (and personally like) every person that nominated themselves/were nominated, I'm little worried of situation, where we lack huge contributors of code, or hardware specialists (MAG, joerg_rw, freemangordon, I'm lucking at You! ;) ). It was also one of factors, that made me to decide of not putting my name into hat. sure, eloquent and communicate "Public Relations" Council members are needed, but IMO not at 100% of Council squad. Just to make things clear - this is not meant to depreciate people. that actually nominated themselves (and become Council members, as it seems) - they at least did it, instead of just talking about it (like me). So, new Council got IMO full mandate to perform hard work in these stormy days :) By the way - looking at amount of work that so (surprisingly) few people need to do, I would like to offer my help @ every possible thing that I'm capable of. I'm really interested in supporting Maemo, even more without honors of being Council member. It's not complimentary declaration - really, ping me if I could be of any help, including "dirty and boring" monkey-like work. /Estel |
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
Unforunately, TMO is under heavy spambot attack these days, and I am sure this is the reason this thread remained unnoticed by the time SD69 made his post. And yes, Texrat is right in what he said about the rules, but in bigger picture we need active 5 person council, who cares about maemo/n900 future. And if the price for such council is bending or ignoring some rule/deadline, I would pay it. I would propose extension to nominations period till 20th of September. Or at least those nominatios made yesterday and today to be accepted as valid.
@estel - good engineers are rarely good managers, and even so it is better to spend their time in development. |
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
Thmubs up for extending nomination period.

@Texrat - please advice if it is possible for current council to decide on extending nominations period by a few says and if it is who and how should proceed. Of course the above question is valid for other council members too. |

For all those who want to nominate or help with the future of maemo.org, thank you for speaking up. I would think we will be able to find a way for you to contribute. We need people to manage package promotions, organize and manage the repositories, etc. Basically, I would like to reduce the budgetary requirements by having trusted community members handle the tasks performed by Nemein and previous distmaster. Feel free to PM me with your skills (which can be more than SW development - we needs things such as website design and reorganization). (Not on forum - I've been at openhardwaresummit.org and at maker faire this weekend - limited availability). |

Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
Dont be disappointed ,just extend the date and see the response as if that delights you !!
|
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
i personally would appreciate if more thanks holder people come to the council and also those have been currently available time to time for the community work .Please we only have 2 duration left for our community term ,officially in sense of budget etc .So lets not ruin this ? i am no developer ,all i can do is block those spammer who been recently smashing threads over and over ,i dont know if i can stand in a cue ,but as an enthusiastic N900 user & lover ,i would like to do anything ,council asks me to ,only if i am capable of doing what so ever .
So either extend the date please so that we get the best out of our community as an active COUNCIL or if the council members have already been selected then i hope they will work in the best interest of the community and also i would like to see that there are always 5 or more than 5 members working for the community . people are expecting a lot from this community so lets be nice ,all of us !! i hope i was clear ,though english is not my native language . |
Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
Given the circumstances (spam attack and, more importantly, Gary's death just before nomination periods end - many people got other things in their head, than sending last-moment nominations...), I think extending period is sane and legit thing to do.
Ho ever, I can't disagree with Texrat - there was enough time, and honestly, *we* (interested members) just failed, because one reason or another. Anyway, no matter of election path, I'll help as much as I can, and I won't be disappointed or demotivated. It's a pity that my skills are limited, though - I don't seem to match any important "skill group" mentioned by SD69. At least, if "is quickly adaptable/learning fast" isn't a proper skill :p (somehow, that's also what I've in mind, writing about "we need coders in Council, not talkers"). /Estel // Edit No matter of decision, please make it quickly, because if - by any chance - we're going to extend nomination period to 20th September, on 19th evening, we may be more than disappointed by outcome :p |

So guys, please, lets make it clear - either you will make this final effort (as a council members) to mail those from the council who don't participate on TMO anymore and persons nominated so far to get their opinion on extending nomination period, or you will make a decision by yourselves quickly. Texrat, SD69, I am really sorry to put such a pressure on you, I know both of you live with the idea behind this community, FOSS as a whole and all of the Maemo, Meego and mobile Linux stuff, but I think we (as a community), developers who contribute, ordinary users, etc. , should have a council members who are enthusiastic, energetic and interested in the future of TMO, CSSU, Maemo 5 and n900. Because it seems to me that hard times are coming. |

Re: Maemo Community Council Nomination Period Ending Soon
Personally, I would like to have clear, straightforward information about decision. For me, SD69 post sounds like they're not going to extend nomination period - I'm totally ok with that decision, but I would like to know for sure, that it *is* decision. thanks in advance.
