All,

Can someone please explain to me how Gorilla screens work. I have started noticing new scratches every single day on my delicious N9. They wipe off with a rub but reappear later. I keep the phone away from all metal and sharp objects. It even has its own pocket in my coat.

If I knew nothing about screen technology i would assume Gorilla is a step down from old school screens. It took a year for my N900 to have any visible scratches yet its not been a week and my N9 is starting to look like a chopping board.

Can any UK folks post links of recommended screen protectors. I like the sound of the Skinomi brand but cant find it in the UK.

The non-scratchproof i8910 has but one tiny scratch probably from a fall after 2 years of use, so I thought the N9 would be just impossible to scratch, but now I am worried. Also I believe there is no oleophobic coating, it gets very easily dirty, and it hasn't got that "gliding" feel of the Galaxy S.

Re: Has anyone Scratched the screen on the N9 yet?

Hi all!, got my 64g N9 last week and would like to thank everyone for the abundance of useful info found here!

TBH, I'm not the most careful of users and already it got flicked onto the ground, not exactly my doing (gf) but I myself do manhandle it quite a bit - putting it in my jean pocket and what not.

Imo I dislike the rubber cover that came it with, feels really odd in my hands and ruins the whole "fits naturally" feel.

Scratches and dings don't really bug me that much although the shiny back plating where the camera sits tend to get scratched up the easiest and it shows up quite obvious.....

Caring for your tech is always good, but so is not stressing over something not worth stressing over. Nokia did say the N9 would age gracefully anyway with the full colour polycarbonate body and all.

I guess... just try not to drop it, hard and enjoy using it more. :D

That guy does not know how to handle a knife, lol :D

My carbon steel (TM) potato peeler eats Giralla Gloss for breakfast.

Without special effort I have already some scratches on rounded edge of the screen are easy to spot by eye and feel with fingernail.

This is exactly what i have done! Maybe there is a defect in some phones! It just doesnt look like a scratch as it buffs away! but maybe it was always there? anyone unboxing should smudge it up and check for us if they see any marks!

I still have not got round to going to a Nokia repair centre - tried on sunday but the one i know of is no more!! so will try O2 at the weekend and see what they say!

Can you submit photos for comparison?

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a screen protector that actually covers the entire front glass area. How stupid are some of these cuts that only cover the screen. The whole point of our phone is to Swype near the outside of the screen area, I don't want to be feeling the edge of a screen.

I've gotten three off ebay, those at least had two tabs for easy application.

Protectionfilms24.com pulled the same crap, and I couldn't even use it because of the stupid design that made it difficult to apply the screen protector (tab is so easy to break off).

I've also received the Nvisible guard... but I didn't realize this is the water/soap application type. I've never had any luck with those types, too sticky/rubbery feeling or screen distortion.

I wonder how screen protectors would even lay flat on a 2.5D screen!

more than likely they will say scratches are not covered but worth a go! Still not convined it is a scratch though!

Yea i Have this issue too. I hate it cause you really cant see it unless your look at it. im in the US with my N9 with the New Zealand warranty so not much I can do. I ordered the Invisishield for the front of my N9.

This is sounding like a common problem! I tried taking mine into o2 as this is now a repair point where i live and they were pretty useless! I said i would talk to Nokia before commiting a send off as i don't know if Nokia UK will have these screens or if its a known problem! whos to say a screen replacement will last long!! it may just come back!

Can you put a pic up? i would be interested to see the type of mark yours has?

If enough of us can put these pics up it will be good ammo to send Nokia!

Maybe if you REALLY push hard on it, it may scratch, not sure.. but I did play with it a lot with keys and no scratch on that screen.

Amazing.

it must have been some thing with a really fine edge.new keys at a perfect angle could do it.

For me I never put my phone in my pocket. I have a holster that has microfiber material inside. So I really think its a defect in some phones

I've got two or three small scratches. Guess it's due the fact I've kept the phone on my nightstand upside down and tried to grasp it during morning - failing to do so and moving it around for a few times.

Doesn't bother me that much at this point.

Scratched my N9...

It's actually quite easy to scratch it - I scratched mine with a rusty pair of scissors.

You just need something with uneven surface and rub it against the N9 and it will scratch.

The demos you see on video on using a sharp knife to cut it won't scratch because the knife despite being very sharp have a smooth cutting surface. It would get scratched if you use a rust knife on the other hand.

Hope this make sense and be warn...

I'm buying a screen protector for my N9...

Anybody know a good one?

Re: Has anyone Scratched the screen on the N9 yet?

Email from Nokia:

Thank you for the clarification.

With regard to your concerns, we would like to inform you that since the Nokia N9 is unavailable in the UK, then the answers to your inquiry are:

1. The phone is covered by the warranty in the UK if and only if the country where you have imported it from is a member of the European Union. Even if it is covered by the warranty, if the parts needed are unavailable in the UK, then we will be unable to repair it. The best option in the matter is to contact the Nokia support of the country where you have purchased it and send it there (to a relative or friend) to have it repaired. We would also like to inform you that we will be unsure if it will be covered by the warranty as it is a harware issue. Nevertheless, we strongly recommend contacting the country support of your phone to know if it will be covered.

2. We also suggest contacting the country support of your phone for any alternative regarding backing up.

3-4. Please refer to our answer on your first inquiry.

5. Since your phone is from another coutry, it cannot be sent to us via UPS or Freepost and Care Points may be unable to repair your device as the phone does not exist in the country.

If you have any other concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us again as we are more than willing to be of assistance

Re: Has anyone Scratched the screen on the N9 yet?

From Nokia Denmark

At this point, we have not heard about any issues of the kind that you are describing.
But since the repair procedures in Denmark are different from UK in that all repair matters are handled by the retailers, I would recommend you to contact your specific retailer, to get more details about whether they have had any complaints about similar issues.

Since the repair procedures are different, it is not possible to directly ship any particular parts from Nokia DK to Nokia UK.
If you plan to return to Denmark at any point, you will have the opportunity to get your device sent in for repair through your retailer. Otherwise, I would recommend that you contact a UK Nokia service point so they can tell you whether they are able to repair it themselves or if there are any other service points in the UK that have the option to do that type of repair.

I would greatly appreciate if you could participate in a short survey about our service. The survey will greatly help me improve my services going forward.

You are always welcome to contact me again if you have any further questions, or if there is anything else I can assist you in.

Best regards

Amalie Andersen

Noticed several scratches on my N9 yesterday after 2 weeks of very careful use. Its been in my pocket but I've always been careful of it...

Still waiting on the screen protectors i ordered from ebay which are now too late to have kept it in pristine condition - very disappointed with the scratches...

Nokia were great to include the rubber skin case, why did they not include a screen protector pre-installed too? Would have cost pennies and would have fully protected the device, if it was factory installed then there would have been no effect on the overall device appearance...

wow, are they very noticeable? I know gorilla glass is not scratch proof, but I though it was scratch resistant? I'm hesitant on getting one now if you say you were very careful with the phone.

I have my N9 for about 3 weeks now. After some days I recognized some scratches. Don't know where they came from. I didn't use a knife ore something. Maybe some kind of sand in a pocket but the scratch is little too deep I think :-(

http://www.philzstift.de/bilder/scratch.jpg

Do you think you can fix them somehow? Some guys around here fix carwindows, would that be an idea?

Hello friends,

I bought my n9 last Saturday.Today I've a few scratches on screen :-(
I'm very dissapointed.. All scratches are in the left-top corner..
When the screen is clean, almost I can't see any scratches.

Any ideas?

I have a small scratch near the center, I had it in a pocket with my ipod and guessing it scrapped up against the screen. However it is really hard to notice so I guess it is really no big deal.

Hey guy, i may have found something to fix your Gorilla Glass screen. While being paranoid about my own from reading all your misfortunes and looking for potential fixes, i found this:

Anyone dare to use Rain-X on their N9 screen? I use it on my car windshield and it makes it real smooth :) This not to make fun on this issue as I've discovered a swirly scratch at the top left hand corner (I think it came like that and I only noticed it 2 weeks after I had it) and a small vertical one more toward the centre.

This guy used it on his Samsung and says it works ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq_VTnUWbnU

is there not a polarised layer on top of the glass? wouldnt want to remove that!

Re: Has anyone Scratched the screen on the N9 yet?

I'll throw in a good comment for the screen. Had mine for over a month and no scratches yet. The metal strip on the back is scratched up though. I don't baby my phones in any way, no screen protector and ending up in my pocket with coins or keys is uncommon, but not unheard of.

There are some good batches out there.

Re: Has anyone Scratched the screen on the N9 yet?

Can't remember where I read it, the polarizer filter is not on the surface. Not sure if the N9 glass has other coatings on top.

Edit:

Did a search ... it was on the Lumia 800, so I guess it would apply to the N9 as well.

"The Corning Gorilla glass makes sure the display won't get scratched either. Under that tough cover hides a polarizing filter that reduces reflections and improves the image quality."

http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_lumia_...view-686p2.php

Ok, more info from Nokia Conversations:

"In ClearBlack Display phones, the polarizer is placed between the window and the touch sensor. The goal of this layers is to stack the optical performance with an air-gap solution. By putting the polarizer between the touch and display, engineers can block reflection from the captive sensor grid. To envision this, tilt a traditional touch screen phone in direct sunlight…see the grid of tiny dots? That’s the capacitive sensor grid."

Just tried rain x. it cleans the screen well but didn't get rid of the 3 small scratches on my n9. As an added bonus it made the screen significantly more finger print resistant. I haven't notice any negative effects of the rain-x but it didn't serve the purpose invented.

You're one daring person :) Thanks for the feed back. I was hoping it would work for very superficial scratches.

Perhaps something more industrial strength and plenty of elbow grease could be in order:

or

I couldn't see myself doing this though.

Hi guys...

I've also realised recently that my N9 screen had a scratch and that's after 1month+ of careful usage.
I have a N8 too and both phones have gone thru the same kind of environment as I carry both together.
They are either in my pocket or in my carrier.
Note that both had no screen protector and look at the scratch (see image) I have on the N9. N8's screen is still beautiful.

Really cannot understand why and how that scratch could have appeared on such hardened glass?

I'm sorry to hear that....

First accessory I'm buying is a suitable case.
Included case it not the best for protecting the screen.
There's better options that don't affect usability.
Although I haven't seen any yet that don't look gaudy.

I'll prolly also get an all-body screen protector.
As the metal plating on the back can easily scratch.

Re: Has anyone Scratched the screen on the N9 yet?

I got a scratch on my screen last week from putting it back in my pocket while sitting down - the metal stud of the coin pocket of my jeans must have done it. Next time an air hostess asks me to put my N9 away for takeoff or landing I'm putting it in a bag :(

The scratch is deep enough to feel with a fingernail, too, so I'm not sure it'd buff out.
