Forcing maximum brightness or disabling auto light sensor?

I want to be able to set a specific brightness level and make it stick without it fluctuating due to ambient light levels on my N9.

Sometimes, my N9 is simply not as bright as I want it to be and I can't do anything about it other than shine a torch to the light sensor. :(

Is this actually possible?

A simple search would let you know that there are already solutions...

Here is your solution guys:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Disable_the_ambient_light_sensor

Once you've disabled ALS, it won't dim the lights anymore.

Have fun!

Re: Forcing maximum brightness or disabling auto light sensor?

TO DISABLE ALS:

in /etc/mce/mce.ini

under [Modules] > list of modules to load,
change "filter-brightness-als" to "filter-brightness-simple"

then reboot.

------------------------------------------------------
You need to be root to do it, I edit files as root through SSH over Wifi using WinSCP on my PC. The latest version of SSH for N9 disables SSH root access, I had fun re-enabling it. See here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=79645

Or you can use Nano:

1. open xterm
2. devel-su [enter] then your root password [enter]
3. nano /etc/mce/mce.ini

then use the arrowkeys on the virtualkeyboard to navigate the file, and make the change.

once done, ctrl+o then enter saves the file
ctrl+x closes Nano

Similar solution to the N900 answer after all...

Re: Forcing maximum brightness or disabling auto light sensor?

wow. so easy. alright, trying it out now.

Update: I've just tested this and it works brilliantly. It will give you 5 distinct level of brightness using the brightness bar in Settings and does not fluctuate by ambient lighting changes. The maximum brightness is brighter than iPhone4's max brightness level while keeping the color temperature and saturation intact. (it's slightly warmer than iPhone4) The over-saturation mode is gone also. So you get max brightness without over-saturation. I really like this!

Hey. This is fantastic. Been trying to figure this out. Great job. Only issue is i'm not able to edit the file. It seems like it's read-only. I used file manager and file box and same thing. Is there an editing program i'm supposed to have to be able to do this?

Re: Forcing maximum brightness or disabling auto light sensor?

You can also set it manually to a specific value via the terminal:

Quote:

echo 255 > /sys/devices/omapdss/display0/backlight/display0/brightness

you can set manually values between 0-255.
I tested this and value 1 is much darker than the lowest point in the Settings slider bar. Also, I'm not sure if it's just my eyes but value 255 seems to be a tiny tiny bit brighter than the maximum accessible via the Settings bar. (while using filter-brightness-simple module in mce.ini)

http://forum.meego.com/showpost.php?...4&postcount=13

by the way, anyone know how to manually access the over-saturation mode also?
(the mode which is max brightness + more vibrant colors for outdoors which N9 has)
This mode seems to look better in direct sunlight or similar situations...

I had "filter-brightness-simple" in mce.ini and bumbed into troubles after PR1.1 update.

After screen saver turned on, I could see the clock in black backround. But when I double tapped or pushed power button, I had completely black screen. Another push on power button brought back the clock on screen. Felt like screen was off except in screen saver mode. Reboot didn't fix that. After reboot screen was on, but when screen kicked on, same situation again.

After putting back "filter-brightness-als" and rebooting everything was ok again.

Re: Forcing maximum brightness or disabling auto light sensor?

Well, I'm using filter-brightness-simple with PR1.1 and I have no issues with the lock screen etc.

Re: Forcing maximum brightness or disabling auto light sensor?

Thanks, that encouraged me to try again filter-brightness-simple. No problems this time.

EDIT: Nope, reported too early. After a while (longer time no usage) blank screen happened again. I have to go back to filter-brightness-als. That sucks.

Noticed also that there were new mce.ini in /etc/mce directory, mce.ini.dpkg-dist. I suppose this is a new one which has not been taken into use because old mce.ini was edited. Can anyone confirm, I don't remember whether that was there already before PR update.

I took that one into use, it seems to contain different color profiles.

Re: Forcing maximum brightness or disabling auto light sensor?

Can someone please post complete instructions (step by step) for noobies like me:) I've downloaded Nano app and got to the needed directory (etc/mce/mce.ini), but I can't figure out how to use arrow keys to navigate to the part of code that needs to be changed. When I hit the arrow (< >) keys, it just inserts "<" or ">" instead of moving through code.

Please, help!

I'm on PR 1.0

I have the filter-brightness-simple now working, at least most of the time. Every now and then I get the black screen effect when double-tapping the lock screen (once in couple of weeks or so).

If you want to see the effect, do

echo 0 > /sys/devices/omapdss/display0/backlight/display0/brightness

To get screen back "echo 7 >...". When my screen suddenly turns black, something has written 0 there. Don't know what triggers that.

^ If it's reproducible.....
Or you have a rough idea under what circumstances it's likely to appear, make sure you report it.
http://harmattan-bugs.nokia.com/
Check that it hasn't already been reported first of course.

If you get enough people watching the bug & voting, & Nokia devs can identify root cause/s thanks to good feedback.
Then it's likely to be rectified for 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4 (if that happens).

Re: Forcing maximum brightness or disabling auto light sensor?

Hi everyone, just get my nokia N9 today and after setting up everything, this topic actually the last thing i would like to enquire about.

I am a very low educated on scripting or develope person and seems having very hard time to understand about all this.

I manage to turn on the developer mode and typing on terminal(handset)

devel-su
rootme

and that is the furthest i could go and i don't know what's the next step.

my question is:
1. is there any platform or software i need to install for my laptop?
2. is it possible anyone could show step by step so is easy for a noob like me could follow it?

Hope there's someone who can help me about this as really irritating that the light been dim everytimes in low light conditions.

Awaiting soonest reply. Thank you.

Rgds,
David Lee (The noobies)

I know it's not an officially supported feature.
But it may still be of interest to them, & may result in them finding a bug that affects other things.

Another thing that sort of helps is the standby screen clock. It tells you when the device is locked. Double tap, and the screen will go black, just swipe like you would regularly to unlock. You will still see nothing, but your N9 will be unlocked. Push and hold the power button until you feel the vibration. Wait 30 second for the shutdown cycle. Then power it back on. Hopefully it will restore your screen issues. My issues seem to be either rebooting the device then locking the screen, it will go blank. This is really frustrating, and is making it hard for me to want to continue and use the N9. I have to reboot the thing like 10 times to get the display driver to finally stay on once I unlock it. Does anyone have a fix or better work around for this? I'm kinda desperate here because I love the phone, but this annoyance could be a deal breaker for me.

This is caused by "turning off brightness als" :)
Still no fix?

My low-power mode clock is very dim. I remember doing a hack a while back to make it dimmer so it wouldn't light up the whole room at night but now I can't remember how I did that. Any ideas?
I would like to revert back to normal brightness now that I have a colored clock.

I tried this and now my phone won't connect to the internet, it says it's in flight mode even though it's turned off. Bluetooth is also stuck on. Nokia suite and Nokia software updater won't recognise my phone, so I can't reflash the firmware. Would anyone be able to help me with this?

What exactly did you do? I saw the exact same post on lost root password for SSH thread; both these are distinct threads so please explain what you did and what have you tried to do to fix it...

Well, I read in one of the comments that you had to enable the root login before disabling the auto brightness, so I did that first, I was just wondering if anyone had this problem on either of these mods. I edited the /etc/mce/mce.ini file by changing filter-brightness-als to filter-brightness-als. When my phone wasn't working correctly, I changed the file back but it didn't help with anything.

In case anyone else arrives here looking for this command line as I have, here's the command that worked for me:
Code:

echo $BRIGHTNESS > /sys/class/backlight/acx565akm/brightness
Of course $BRIGHTNESS should be replaced by the desired number between 0 and 255.
I think the /sys/ folder structure is different since I switched from stock to CSSU Maemo.
