Yeah yeah its another portrait keyboard post.

So now that Jonwil figured out the backends of the stock vkb, he wants to know if its worth to clone the N900 stock vkb and include portrait mode support.

I know there are several portrait vkbs already in the wild like FastSMS, but its slow and others prefer the stock vkb. And yeah we have a hardware keyboard that we can use but there are times when we need a portrait keyboard.

So this thread is sort of an attempt to convince him. cmon guys! :)

I don't even have a N900, but I'll put my support as a dowant... this seriously would have kept me on the N900 when I had it.

great idea +1
nothing more annoying than using my n900 in portrait mode only to realise i need to enter a few letters which means i have to use the full keyboard (which needs two hands) or trying to use the force rotated keyboard which is so cramped

also would it be possible to have a way to activate it without a text field for things like searching in the media player or application manager?

Hi there, +1 for me. The fact that the stock vkb rotates and is semi useable is a real tease, I would love proper portrait vkb support.

Jonwil seems to be very knowledgeable when it comes to reverse engineering. you can check the maemo irc logs to see his progress on reverse engineering fremantle components.

How do I make one (& hopefully could also use on N9 - contract upgrade is 10 weeks away)

Would also be nice to have an option to choose between some different VKB layouts in general.
Somehow the pre PR 1.2 layout worked better for me.

The virtual Portrait Keyboard is definitely the main blocker for N900 being used as an actual portrait phone... almost any portrait app requires the entry of text at some point, and stock vkb is very hard to use, mainly because of the "special characters" button being extremely small...
Also some fixes to the keyboard would be nice, like the "shift" key allowing to enter only one capital letter and then automatically switching back to normal... And T9 option would simply be awesome... (realsportcars may want to help with that kind of "details"??)
Please, this would (almost) complete portrait support on N900!...

Very much in need of portrait vkb. T9 support would also be a great add-on. After all, MTC buses in chennai don't allow me use two hands while travelling :P
