Re: [Announce] CSSU Testing thread

I just installed CSSU Testing for the first time and I have a few questions. I did search this thread and some others, but I'm afraid the information I'm looking for is buried in an overload of other data, so please bear with me.

1. I installed by clicking the CSSU page, and the system reports I have 21.2011.38-1Tmaemo5.1. But I don't see any updates. I thought the community repos were set during installation, but perhaps the infra migration changed that. Any ideas?
EDIT: It looks like, for now, we need to use the skeiron mirror:
Catalogue Name: Community-Testing - Mirror 3
Web address: http://skeiron.org/repo/repository.m...unity-testing/
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free

2. How do you lock in portrait mode? The applet accessible through the menu bar only allows for autorotate and landscape lock.
EDIT:
Based on the discussion here it seems it might not be such a good idea to use portrait lock. Developers don't seem to like it, anyway:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...it+lock&page=9

3. Where do I get access to the 9 desktops? I installed the CSSU graphic configuration tool but there is no option there.
EDIT: Just under the Desktop > Manage Views

4. Very important to me: How do you enable the task swapping via the keyboard (Ctrl - Left and Ctrl - Right, plus Ctrl - Backspace for task rotation). Do I need to install the modified hildon desktop? I thought this was a part of the CSSU.
EDIT:
a. I think the Ctrl - Left and Ctrl - Right task navigation is not built into CSSU, but is enabled via the Task Swapper application. I tried this and it's nifty, but unfortunately it's skipping some applications.

b. The Ctrl - Backspace behavior can be set in CSSU. For example, to activate the same behavior as Alt - Tab in Windows, you run this command:

gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/key-actions/ctrl_backspace_in_tasknav -t int 5

This is described here: http://my.arava.co.il/~matan/repo/Mo...n_Desktop.html

(Question: Is there a GUI to set up this, a front end for gconftool-2?)
gconf-editor, perhaps? ;)

5. Finally, I installed Kernel Power 52 before installing CSSU. Should this be OK?

Thank you in advance, and apologies if I miss this information in obvious places. I actually looked, and I hope I didn't quit too fast.

If you have autorotation enabled, and use this applet while in portrait mode, it will lock in portrait - despite informing, that it's in landscape lock mode. It's acting like that since few CSSU updates.

Absolutely yes. If you're using KP, you may want to try upgrading into cssu-thumb, which is exact fork of cssu-testing, with addition of thing being thumb-compiled (which make them use less RAM), and compiled using newer compiler (which makes them run faster/require less cpu power). See:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=84829

Thanks for time you've spent to edit your post and add already found answers to your questions, for others with same problems. It's greatly appreciated and nice (yet rare) practice.

Regarding the various missing packages and missing versions, I've fixed the repo today and it's back to T7.2 again.

Also you can expect a new update within the next 2 weeks :)

I see, thank you for pointing that out. It wasn't working like that in 5.1, but I haven't tried yet in 7.2. I'll try this later today.

The way I understand it then is that what the devs don't like is forced portrait lock, which is different from portrait lock? I am guessing that portrait lock just keeps applications that are whitelisted from autorotating when switching to landscape, whereas forced portrait lock just forces all applications to use portrait mode.

I really need to investigate more how this works, will read up on it.

Yes, I was already thinking about doing that! When I first started reading that thread it was sounding like there would be a mild performance loss, but I was unaware that the new compiler actually made code not only use less RAM, but also run faster. I like win/win situations!

That's the least I can do, Estel. I'm in constant awe of this community, and what people like you and merlin (and so many others) have done for it. Hopefully I'll start developing soon for the N900, and give back some of what I have gotten from you guys. Thank you! :)

It seems portrait lock doesn't work for me. When I activate lock while in portrait, it reverts to landscape and locks. This is even without any applications open.

Never mind though, I need to flash this N900 because I got it recently and who knows what was installed on it before. :)

I forget to add that portrait lock works *only* if keyboard isn't slided out. Unfortunately, sliding keyboard out means orientation lock becoming override to landscape-lock, no matter in what position you've locked it.

It seems like good feature for some use-cases (like people wanting to always have portrait when keyboard is slided in, and always landscape, when slided out), but for others, it's just unnecessary limitation. IMO, it should be configurable.

CSSU team, any insights about it?

Thank you for pointing that out, Estel. I was already aware of that, but still it didn't work for me. Does this work out of the box in CSSU-Testing 7.2 or do I need to install a package to enable it?
EDIT: It did work out of the box in CSSU-Thumb!

I just flashed my N900 and I'm starting from scratch, though. I'm going to try CSSU-Thumb and see how that works.

I am leaning towards installing KP51r1 instead of KP52 since it seems to be more mature. But if you don't agree let me now. :)
EDIT: I just let CSSU-Thumb install the modified KP51r1 kernel (cssu-kernel). So far so good.

By the way, I found some rootfs images in Nokia's site that have me a little perplexed. I found this after flashing my N900 and looking at the version number: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=89800

Not sure what something like 21.2011.38-1.020 would be, but such a file exists! I would be extremely cautious actually flashing something like that into a N900.

(Where XXX is 002, 003, 004, 005, 006, 007, 008, 009, 010...)

Somebody pointed out those are different versions for specific regions, but I thought there were only 4 or 5 regions (Global, USA, UK, India, and Midle East / North Africa). I figured countries like Germany would use the Global image, but I suppose that's not the case.

Not in the least. The CSSU is a collection of bug fixes and improvements to the software originally supplied by Nokia (and updated by their original "SSU" mechanism). Now that Nokia is gone, the community has stepped into the breach to continue this service.

Supporting the "thumb" commands in the CPU is an entirely separate project, which has nothing to do with supporting Nokia's software. There's no need for folks to install the thumb project in order to use the CSSU. So, it has its own separate thread.

im facing a bug in browser (microb) whenever i try to post a comment or want to write something; it uses triggers cpu usage to 100% but when i finish writing or just discard it, cpu usage goes back to normal again.

and also when im typing and i put browser window in background and open any other application or go to home screen cpu usage goes back to normal. Anyone else facing this problem ?

A new update has hit the repo (21.2011.38-1Tmaemo8)

It contains quite some changes.
Until I find the time todo the wiki changelog, the full changelog can be found here:

http://gitorious.org/community-ssu/m...bian/changelog

The orientation lock is now optional and ham might remove it in the upgrade, you can easily install it again if needed, it's in the Desktop section.
PS: this locks to portrait now if you enable it whilst in portrait ;)

Doesn't seem to work as I expected.

I've updated. After reboot opened Modest, Edit Account, checked "mcenfiadvsetupupdateallfolders" (string problem?), Saved settings.

Now when I press Send & receive account says Refreshing, but Last updated time doesn't refresh and there is no notification for new messages in other folders.

It's been a long time since I've had to reflash the phone; it's been very stable on the previous version of CSSU-testing.

In the excruciating process of trying to figure out how to re-flash, a dead link has been discovered in the Wiki:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_firmware
Code:

2.  Download the latest firmware (.bin) file for your region and save it to  %ProgramFiles%\maemo\flasher-3.5\ (the default path), or wherever you installed the Flasher.
Links to an empty page. That's the place where you get the image for your country. I think we may be so screwed.

Two things you will have to keep in mind:

1. Activate the rotation behaviour itself:

gconftool-2 --set --type bool /system/systemui/tklock/auto_rotation true

2. Make sure you have the required image
The new osso-systemui-tklock looks for /etc/hildon/theme/backgrounds/lockslider-portrait.png (for a portrait background image). If that specific file is not present, it will not switch to portrait.

Hey... I am panicking, too. How is it bricked in your case? I see no signs of any problems, so far, after update of CSSU-Testing; will these problems be evident when I attempt to reboot the device?
[Edit]
I have run "aptitude upgrade" several times, just because RootFS had no free space, and I manually optified gcc and purged hildon-theme-beta. Right now, it works fine, but I am afraid of rebooting. I don't have a memory card, though, so I don't expect any problems in the future.
[/Edit]
Best wishes.

Same here, after late night update in the morning N900 was ringing with default tone, text messages and e-mails as well where on default tones. But in settings every thing was set like before update, so I had to change to diferent tone, save it, and then again choose the right one and save.
