How Good Is The n900 Now We Are In 2012?

I've had my n900 for a couple of years now, it's a fantastic phone but I'd like to know how it compares to other, more modern phones now we are in 2012?

One thing that bothers me about the n900 is the poor performance of the web browser. Surfing sites like Facebook can sometimes be painful. I know there are apps out there for Facebook but I never found one I liked as much as the actual site. Viewing videos via the web browser is usually slow too.

Another thing I dislike is the poor performance of the battery. With the Internet on, a fully charged battery would last 3 - 4 hours. I have turned things like GPS, Bluetooth and 3G off, as well as lower the screen brightness.

So how to more modern phones handle websites? Can people give me names of phones that are better than the n900? Price isn't a concern at the moment, I just want to know what's out there. I may just keep my n900 still.

try over clocking.. or turn system sounds off.. remove widgets of desktop.
-- remove cssu -- (Yes, I have 4 N900's and non has it.. and they run great.. well 1 is still new in box!)

Here's a thought.. replace the battery??

I'll give the name of a phone, it's the Nokia N'Fakin900!!

Go to you pommy phone shop, and look.. then take your 2+ year old brick and show them that you want something better then it!! :D:D

Best of luck

For my usage, microb is still the best browser on any mobile platform. However, if you want the best performance with Flash video/games etc, you are better off with one of the high-end Android devices.

Do you mean 3-4 hours of web browsing? If so, I doubt any other device would last much longer. Streaming Flash video in particular will hammer your battery.

I have a few thoughts...

First, as others have said, Opera Mobile and browser-switchboard. Can't recommend you a new phone, I'm sticking with N900.

Second, Scud battery for 10-20% more life, or consider external USB power brick with suitable dumb-charger cable (a Tecknet pack and a Proporta cable is a good combination, both on Amazon).

Third, you'll be lucky to find a laptop that can exceed 3-4 hours of web browsing, never mind a phone, but if you really want to then I refer back to the external power packs mentioned above. I carry a 7000mAh pack, pondering a 12000mAh one. Try and run that out in a day...

Finally, rather than replace the phone consider going SIM-only and then adding a MiFi dongle from the likes of 3; this gets you HSPA+ connectivity via permanent portable WiFi (and offloads some of the power requirement of doing so).

I had a 5800 before, it was great till it started showing signs of dying 1 year after and i had to sell it off.

same thing's happening with the n900 sadly...

1. the main screen slider becomes slugish and icons of previous screen remain on new screen (ie do not update) and the menu background is messed up. restarting device does not help, removing the battery and restarting fixes it. count = 2 times till now.

2. everything is fine, but the n900 is not receiving any messages or calls and i realize this is going on only if i restart by device by chance (then a flood of messages come in). count = 3+

this only started happening recently, device is around ~11 months in use

i dont think im gonna go with smartphones now, not atleast nokia ones

pity this phone has so many features that ill miss

IMO these sound like software issues. Perhaps you should consider a reflash for a clean start?

Is there anything else that you have absolutely no experience with that shouldn't be used?
