Buying a new body for a new phone - just how is that a solution???

My N9 is 3 months old, although I only bought it 10 days ago. I what I thought maybe a tiny crack starting from the mUSB opening and heading toward the AV jack. But it was only 1mm so didn't dwell on it. Now after reading this thread I've just used a torch and magnifying glass and found that it's definitely a crack - which has progressed right on to the AV jack cutout. Not the end of the world but certainly a pisser...

I've bought one.. a cyan one for a change as I've been using the black one. Anyway, m thinking of reporting to Nokia care as well when I get chance before I switch to cyan just in case :). Having seen how easy it is to swap covers, I'm even thinking of getting a white one as well but read that USB cap is prone to breaking during this process..

maemomd, you have lost, get over it. The intention of my last post was to get an original Nokia housing as a replacement for the [fake] housing he obviously got now.

My N9 also has some chips on the mini USB cover and the SIM cover. Of course I haven't exactly been gentle with my N9 - I ditched the silicone cover a couple of weeks after I got the phone.

That's BAD!!!

Until reading this thread I never realised the polycarbonate had any added finish - I thought it was simply bare polycarbonate.

So much for innovative Nokia design...

I wonder if it's more apparent (worse) with the Chinese versions for some reason?

most pics I've seen are on the crappy sim tray and usb cover. How about the body of the phone itself? how many have experienced the damages? I saw a discolouration of one.
This thread made me purchase the cyan version thanks guys :)

I was not able to find a replacement Usb door cover that was black. But you can find the replacement cover for Lumia 800 and because Lumia 800 uses the same design as N9, it should fit.

I'm not sure the Doors and covers are Polycarbonate, because this is strange, I think the body is, but the doors and stuff are just normal plastic, what do you think?

Re: Finish on Black N9 chipping away at edges....

I'm not sure either pal. TBH none of this makes sense - I would expect the SIM and mUSB covers to be either polycarb or a similar plastic with the solid colour right through.

As for that eBay seller and the SIM adapter - 10 quid??? Yet another piss take... :(

Earlier in the thread, check it out, sim/mUSB covers are metal/magnetic.

Re: Finish on Black N9 chipping away at edges....

This is what the back of the N9 currently looks like - the two "patches" that can be seen are stickers that were applied to the device by the Malaysian local telecommunication authority and another by the local distributor for Nokia. I've since removed both of them (at different times, resulting in different shades) after confirmation from Nokia Malaysia that warranty is not dependent on the stickers. In general, I'd say that most of the phone is holding up very well with the exception of:

1) SIM tray cover
2) Micro USB cover
3) Chrome bezel surrounding lens

loool@ebay I was doing some research on what polycarbonate is, and polycarbonate is a thermoplastic. So I think they took normal plastic and glazed it over with the polycarbonate,(EDIT: User said covers are actually metal). according to wikipedia thermoplastics form a glaze. the glaze seems to be chipping off or the protection over the glaze is chipping off. Maybe the actual poly.
Cds, dvds are made from polycarbonate.

Re: Finish on Black N9 chipping away at edges....

As per Wikipedia:
Properties and processing
Polycarbonate is a very durable material. Although it has high impact-resistance, it has low scratch-resistance and so a hard coating is applied to polycarbonate eyewear lenses and polycarbonate exterior automotive components. The characteristics of polycarbonate are quite like those of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, acrylic), but polycarbonate is stronger, usable in a wider temperature range and more expensive. This polymer is highly transparent to visible light and has better light transmission characteristics than many kinds of glass.

This should settle that there does exist a coating. But I dont expect hard coating to chip off in a couple of months. If it does then it is unacceptable. That's not something that's expected.
I do also own a pair of carl zeiss spectacles made of polycarbonate, I've been using them for over 2 years now and still very minimal scratching. (I do not use anything delicately)

And in this case I think the hard coating should be transparent as opposed to being grayish...

Keep it in the silicone case? Is your locale rather humid?

Re: Finish on Black N9 chipping away at edges....

Mine is starting to chip where you open the USB cover around the opening where you open the cover (the round blob thing) and on the cover + on the sim tray.
My N9 has been in silicone cover from day oneon
I live in Denmark it might be humid, but think it's more to do wirh the moisture from your hands. I think I read it somewhere here on TMO.

Regards Dousan...

I think it might be in this thread i read it ;)

Re: Finish on Black N9 chipping away at edges....

I saw this first time live last week:

My colleague's 6 months old 16 GB version has flaking in USB-cover, it has been mostly sitting on the table unused minus calls of course, and has been always in very dry conditions. It's a work phone in a very well ventilated building. I haven't checked yet whether it is made in China or Finland, and I suspect it wouldn't matter since it is USB-cover that has the issue currently.

My 7 months old 64 GB version made in Finland kind of shows some level of flaking after over 7 month's usage. This unit was bought from Nokia flag store in Helsinki the very launch date of N9 in Finland.
It has been both in and out of silicon cover with high humidity at times. I have some dents on it, and I scratched one dent hard with my fingernail to see if anything comes off.
It looks like there is a very thin paint layer on chassis, but it does not have that weird grey color to it like my colleague's phone has. Beneath extremely thin layer of paint it is just black plastic and no grey paint. The bits I'm able to scrape off fall so small, that I can't tell whether any whitish coming off is from my fingernail of actual paint.

But in short; it looks like both black 64 GB and 16 GB versions of N9 have been painted.

Demati 2012-05-21 11:33

Re: Finish on Black N9 chipping away at edges....

My 64GB black N9 still looks pristine. I keep it in the silicone case 90% of the time and have used it daily for 6 months. We haven't had alot of humidity around here so may that has something to do with it.

Re: Finish on Black N9 chipping away at edges....

Btw i can assure you that the treatment that N900's got can also chip away if you drop the device... revealing black plastic.

The matte layer has indeed worn off. How? It's my own fault because I hadn't removed the cover since a few months and it definitely hasn't coped well with the sweat and heat while inside my pocket (I live in a country with a very warm weather).

Clearly, Nokia haven't tested it under this extreme weather condition. :(

I have the same problem.. not so extreme.. but on the back, it's definitely going towards the matte finish turning weird and spotty. I use it in the case most of the time.. and I remove it only to clean the dust and wipe it. I live in a very hot climate as well.. and now, those spots on my phone are not going away at all. They are not oil spills or stuff like that.. the polycarbonate's finish really is wearing off. Also, I think the case is scratching the front edges of the phone every time you take it off or try to put it on.. because the case is so tight. There are permanent scratches on the phone now. My N8 is with me for 2 years and it still doesn't have a single scratch on its freakin' strong body. (and I dropped it many times on the floor in front of iFags to win challenges saying they can't do the same with their phones :D)

Gonna keep it in my case the whole time.. damn, I really wanted to show it off around without the case. :(

Thinking of buying the glossy white housing and replacing it.. but too expensive.

libaax 2012-05-21 14:11

Re: Finish on Black N9 chipping away at edges....

The polish on the body of the n9 seems to have worn off. I had my n9 in a case all the time for 6 months. The back of my n9 looks so dry that its about flake any second.

I wonder does the white n9 suffer from paint chip or is it only the black n9?

guess ill be buying a case for my phone asap then. i just bought a black one :o its definitely a grease magnet and i dont even really have greasy hands.

im also thinking about buying a white housing kit, they have them for about $40 on ebay now, thats not too bad considering buying a white n9 is much more expensive

I also have a Malaysian (China made) N9, 7-8 months old. The PC body seems fine, but the USB/SIM covers have ever so slight chipping. I played around with it, Im certain they are made of steel and painted over. Never noticed until bumping in this thread. Seems like a legit problem. Yay.

Well, Nokia is going 6 feet under any time soon, so its not really gonna change anything anyway.

Looking forward to the Android-Ubuntu quad core combo :) Ubuntu is amazing. When that happens, goodbye Nokia. You were awesome right until you made a pact with the devil.

Re: Finish on Black N9 chipping away at edges....

I'm quite worried about this happening to mine now! the usb cover is looking very greasy, the top and bottom have greasy scratch type marks where the case has rubbed off the matt finish and the back of the phone looks patchy with a line where its been pushed up against the case. it looks like the moulding of the case where it's raised has made a line!

I really think Nokia should replace the cases of affected phones! this should be covered under warranty! annoyingly I live in the UK so won't have much leg to stand on!

I may just buy a white housing kit and fit that!

Re: Finish on Black N9 chipping away at edges....

I really think the best way to keep your N9 (black, cyan, pink matt versions) in the best possible visual condition is to simply carry it without any sort of case or cover...just try to avoid contact with keys and sharp objects and donīt place it on anything oily or greasy...
Iīve been carrying my black N9 without any case or cover for the last month and it definitely looks alright...not as before, when everytime I took off the silicone cover I had to clean and wipe the phone as it looked pretty bad...

Unless ubuntu is on the actual phone, would not care for this. As a former Android user before my n900, the system is still very flawed, even though ICS is much better than the previous crap versions. Any mobile OS that needs so much power to not be laggy is not optimized.

Re: Finish on Black N9 chipping away at edges....

The durability of the paint on this phone is awful. It seems to be covering a black plastic shell underneath.

Here's where it is chipping on my N9:

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/8571/cimg2132m.jpg

I think the simple act of pushing the USB door down (fingernail impact) causes this damage.
Anyone know what can be done to fix something like this? I'm thinking of using a touch-up paint pen for cars...
