Re: What apps are you missing for the Nokia N9?
I was reminded of this thread about the missing apps around the N900... and upon reading a huge part of that thread it hit me...
Will this thread end like that one where a lot of those apps, ideas and notions won't change a thing? Not being negative; it just brings forth the question of why this is being asked, what will come of it and ultimately why hasn't this been done before the N9 even came out? |

Pandora never had an open API, but they had a web interface that could be parsed and replicated by 3rd party apps like pyRadio. Even when they required encryption for the stream calls, pyRadio could keep up with the key generations. But a change made on Pandora's side in early January broke all that. It's always been a closed box, they just finally locked it. No pandora app for anyone unless Pandora writes it themselves. |

Re: What apps are you missing for the Nokia N9?
How about something like 'EASY MEASURE' - iPhone App... It measures distance to objects seen through the lens of the camera? I'm not sure if we have anything like that for our N9

What is different between now and Oct 2009 is Qt, the toolkit any developer willing to cover these requests will work with. There are 180 million customers out there with a Nokia device with Qt inside, and there is a statement from Nokia saying that Qt is at the core of its Next Billion strategy. There is also a better framework for monetization via paid apps or in-app advertisement, which are the business models of many apps requested in this thread. And there is the Microsoft partnership. If an app is available and successful in Nokia Lumia devices it is easier to discuss a port of other Nokia devices. If this list brings actual apps... this depends ultimately on the interest of the brands mentioned and / or other developers capable of developing alternatives. At least having a public list will help. I will present this list also to the people at Nokia going after apps. (and this is why having a clean list in a wiki is a lot better than a very interesting but long forum thread) |
Re: What apps are you missing for the Nokia N9?
Hi qgil,
I would like * http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/pwsafe/ - Password safe ** I had it on the N900, with read-only on a MacBook. Hate to switch again but I am open to any good suggestion on this. As a geocacher, I am happy with the progress on AGTL. But WhereIGo caches are impossible. However, there is an open source possibility * http://code.google.com/p/openwig/wiki/InstallationGuide - OpenWIG ** Runs on JavaME The N9 claims to play Apple LossLess music files. However, it does not play the m4a files I encoded through iTunes on my MacBook. They played on the N900 after installing OggSupport. Or am I missing something here? Thanks for this effort, Rob |
