Re: What apps are you missing for the Nokia N9?

a bit off topic maybe but ????

What about Repos..the n900 (wich i also own) is filled with repos..i have enable the possibility for third party apps on my n9..but ther arent many repo's..

Maybe i'm not searching the web right (i only have the n9 for about 2 months now)..anybody on the repo stuff please let me know??? thanks in advance..

As for the apps there are a whole lot i would love to see on the n9 like...

Tune wiki
Music Gear
Thomson key
smssend (send sms commandline)
wifi eye (or any good nice wifi scanner)
a couple of sniffers maybe..
stkeys(find router info and/or key)
brightness applet (if this is possible)
quicklaunch (again if this is possible)
extra decoder support
ytube ( i like cutetube but to me ytube does a great job)
a s*** load of theme's and icon packs (keeps your phone looking sick) plus i'm used to the fact that i can pimp my n900 to the maxx
Pierogi ( the best remote to me that is)

i wish i could do this all by my self but since you asked lol..No i can only develop in XHTML and javascript (css of course) so this list goes beyond my knowledge...Thanks hope i could help..

First I tought this cannot be done cause those apps(gallery/music etc..) is closed source.

But then I realized it maybe can be done in a dirty way:

1. Remov the original .desktop files and replace it with a cusomized one that instead starts a "pincode app"

2. If succefully validated: spawn the correct app.

Drawback with this is if people has access to the terminal they still can start ithe apps from terminal (or via ssh)..

I am to lazy to check if possible but could be an idea for someone who is willing to tweek...

And in the case of sendsms console app this can be done very easy using qtmobility and python scripting. I think the is already some kind of testcode for it somewhere...

I was reminded of this thread about the missing apps around the N900... and upon reading a huge part of that thread it hit me...

Will this thread end like that one where a lot of those apps, ideas and notions won't change a thing?

Not being negative; it just brings forth the question of why this is being asked, what will come of it and ultimately why hasn't this been done before the N9 even came out?

Pandora never had an open API, but they had a web interface that could be parsed and replicated by 3rd party apps like pyRadio. Even when they required encryption for the stream calls, pyRadio could keep up with the key generations.

But a change made on Pandora's side in early January broke all that. It's always been a closed box, they just finally locked it.

No pandora app for anyone unless Pandora writes it themselves.

Good question and I wish I could foresee the future in order to answer firmly.

What is different between now and Oct 2009 is Qt, the toolkit any developer willing to cover these requests will work with. There are 180 million customers out there with a Nokia device with Qt inside, and there is a statement from Nokia saying that Qt is at the core of its Next Billion strategy.

There is also a better framework for monetization via paid apps or in-app advertisement, which are the business models of many apps requested in this thread.

And there is the Microsoft partnership. If an app is available and successful in Nokia Lumia devices it is easier to discuss a port of other Nokia devices.

If this list brings actual apps... this depends ultimately on the interest of the brands mentioned and / or other developers capable of developing alternatives. At least having a public list will help. I will present this list also to the people at Nokia going after apps.

(and this is why having a clean list in a wiki is a lot better than a very interesting but long forum thread)

Hi qgil,

I would like
* http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/pwsafe/ - Password safe
** I had it on the N900, with read-only on a MacBook. Hate to switch again but I am open to any good suggestion on this.

As a geocacher, I am happy with the progress on AGTL. But WhereIGo caches are impossible. However, there is an open source possibility
* http://code.google.com/p/openwig/wiki/InstallationGuide - OpenWIG
** Runs on JavaME

The N9 claims to play Apple LossLess music files. However, it does not play the m4a files I encoded through iTunes on my MacBook. They played on the N900 after installing OggSupport. Or am I missing something here?

Thanks for this effort, Rob

Thanks quim, I will stick to the world around Qt. Whatever Company or Platform will use it as their main framework... I just uploaded my next application to ovi and I hope the most developers from the maemo/MeeGo world will do this, too.

But since I only develop for devices I'm personally own and using I hope the next billion strategy contains devices which fulfils my personal needs. The N9 64GB is currently on the lowest level from the hardware side. I'm already carrying 50GB data every day with me. *keepingFingerCrossed*

Because the page doesn't update itself, someone has to do it (in my first post I recommended the wiki as first option).

My time today flew away in maemo.org continuity discussions + Qt 5 Alpha work. Tomorrow and Wednesday I'll be in Linux Collaboration Summit, quite afk.

You know the adagio: "It's a wiki, anybody can edit it". :)

But if nobody does, I'll go.

Something like VLINGO would be great. I used it a lot on my E7, especially when walking on the street and looking down and typing wasn't the best way to get a quick text out. Walking and just speaking into the phone "Text James Smith, Message, Don't worry I'm on my way" was just superb.

I know there is that Quick Voice Keyboard app, but it is not the same as the example I mention, and on the occasions I've tried it, it just doesn't work.

So, VLINGO. Not exactly Siri, but it would be a big step forward :)

P.S.: Clock indicator (with seconds) in Nokia Drive application.

P.P.S:Skype video call support is meaningful for me and does not present in standard N9!

Why do I have a feeling that this whole this is only going to show fruits to Windows division of Nokia? MSFT had a leaked presentation about identifying the popular apps, is this some kind of survey that we general users are unaware of.
I read and do understand what Quim posted few posts back about how this might help but I still cannot see how N9 would benefit from this? Maybe Meltemi (next billion), and we have seen how well code once deploy everywhere worked as the count for Maemo and Meego apps went.

There is a lot of people at Nokia being paid for bringing more apps to Windows Phone but I'm not one of them. I'm being paid (among other things) for bringing apps to Qt and my main motivation when asking here is to have more apps for the N9 at the Nokia Store.

If this also helps bringing more apps to other Nokia platforms then great. All the better for developers and users.

Windows Phone doesn't seem to be in your scope. From what I remember from the Meego Conference you are still very much QT oriented and you were big on phone gap. I don't see your actions as anything but trying to help the N9 become and flourish into what it can become.

I can't speculate about 3rd party projects. My goal is to have all the info in this thread well organized in that wiki page and then go to the guys at Nokia that are talking to these companies. As customers you could also contact them, showing them the URLs expressing the interest.

If any of these developers have already a contact with Nokia, then this effort might help getting the discussions into results. If not, then maybe that is a signal for them to contact us.

Btw, i remember shazam was showed off on Qt on N900 way back Maemo5 times, and there was a lot of talking and how it is easy to port and so on. and than was meego and introduced and same story here, only talks. I wonder, when talking would stop and doing would come... (shazam is just an example, i'm talking about those millions apps i hear everytime but never see them, while google talk less but do more)

** There is no password management application for N9 using the same encrypted password file format as any popular open source desktop password manager application like Password safe, Keepass or KeepassX. It would be much easier to keep passwords synchronized between desktop and phone, if both could use the same encrypted password database file.

Seconded but also if commercial pressure can be exerted, a LastPass client with browser integration would be cool too. I use that on macs, iPad and Ubuntu and it syncs flawlessly across them. It's the only solution I've found that works.

Hello ,
Do you think we should focus more on universal apps , not too specific ?
We should definitely vote.

1.
*Skype video call - skype.com (Cross-platform )
** The most popural Video chat service.

And for me personally

2.
* Song tracking/recognition app - shazam.com , soundhound.com
(cross-platform)
** N9 is missing such app that could work both with the radio or mic recordings.

3.
* Recorder.
** SImple app that can record not only the mic but the conversations.
