Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

I uninstalled 0.11 and installed 0.12 but this is not working. Nothing happens when I cover or uncover sensor.

qwazix 2013-12-30 22:34

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

hmm, I wonder why it works for me. I'll see what I can do.

In the meantime, please try to restart the service
Code:

stop timenow.conf
killall timenowd
start proximityd
start timenow.conf

and report if anything changes. Something that would be also very useful would be to start the daemon via ssh (/opt/timenowd/bin/timenowd) and paste what it spits out when covering or uncovering the sensor.

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

I installed new version, rebooted the phone, and it doesnt show lockscreen when uncovered but it does blanks display on covering it while lockscreen is active.

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

I guess I got what it is. Could a brave soul change sleep 2 to sleep 10 in /etc/event.d/timenow.conf and report back?

Kossuth 2013-12-31 04:41

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

I dont have any sleeps in my timenow.conf. Here is what it has:

Code:

start on started hildon-desktop
stop on stopped hal
#stop on stopped dbus
respawn
respawn limit 15 3

script
    exec su user -c "run-standalone.sh /opt/timenowd/bin/timenowd"

end script

Could this have anything to do with the fact that I've been using the cantruchds version before?

Edit: Tried purging timenow and resinstalling it and noticed that during install apt reports:
Code:

Setting up timenow (0.0.12) ...
initctl: Job not changed: timenow.conf

Hi qwazix, thanks for quick response. I am sorry but i am not able to find that sleep thing to change in timenow.conf
there is only respawn which have limits 15 3, do you want me to change something in there?

P.S. Restarting the daemon didn't worked for me.

Tried:-
Code:

start on started hildon-desktop
stop on stopped hal
#stop on stopped dbus
respawn
respawn limit 15 3
sleep 10

script
    exec su user -c "run-standalone.sh /opt/timenowd/bin/timenowd"

end script

and it was still the same as before, though like others, for me the sleep value wasnt there in timenow.conf in v0.12, i copied it from v0.10.

qwazix 2013-12-31 10:16

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

wow! I got a bunch of supporting users :):)

please set timenow.conf as follows:

Code:

start on started proximityd
stop on stopped hal
respawn
respawn limit 15 3

script
    sleep 10
    exec su user -c "run-standalone.sh /opt/timenowd/bin/timenowd"

end script
post-stop script
    # clean up
    killall timenowd
end script

and then reboot.

It works for me like that. If it works for other people too, I will push the change to extras-devel. I'm asking because apparently the boot procedure is different for each phone and no solution is universal.

if it fails please change the exec line to
Code:

exec su user -c "run-standalone.sh /opt/timenowd/bin/timenowd 2>/home/user/.timenow/timenow.log"
and post contents of timenow.log directly after boot

respawn

post-stop script

Its still like before for me, it does not show lockscreen when uncovered but it does blanks display if covered when lockscreen is active. Ive attached the log file.

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

@Sohil876: that problem was there on 0.11 but hopefully it is fixed in 0.12, make sure you have 0.12

on the other hand
Code:

/bin/sh: /opt/timenowd/bin/powerbutton: Permission denied
looks suspicious

please run ls -la /opt/timenowd/bin and post here, maybe there's a permission error. I also depend on rootsh so make sure you have that installed (which might not be the best way to do that, I might better add timenow to sudoers)

Kossuth 2013-12-31 11:58

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

My powerbutton file had -rw-r--r-- permissions, and I chmodded it for testin to -rwxrwxrwx and timenow started working, so here it was permission error. I have rootsh already installed.

This worked like charm for me. Thanks for the solution, it was only the permission issue.

Hi qwazix, thanks for your hardwork and quick support. Changing permission is working fine for me but do i still need to change timenow.conf as u said for some smoothness or something maybe?

Yup this worked for me too, though instead of -rwxrwxrwx i did -rwxr-xr-x.

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

I meant the permission change only for testing if it is actually a permission problem and mainly for only to report it to qwazix. I am not enough skilled in linux systems to know if this "enable every and all permissions" has any ill side effects in the long run. Maybe qwazix can advice on more limited permission to run timenow.

hcavjr 2013-12-31 16:58

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

Great. I only changed permission and its now working.

chmod 755 /opt/timenowd/bin/powerbutton

Neither had to restart.

Any changes recommended for /etc/event.d/timenow.conf?

qwazix 2013-12-31 17:27

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

Happy to hear that the permission solved it. I'm not sure if the execute bit is enough for owner, as it is run as root, so I'd advise to just chmod +x /opt/timenowd/bin/powerbutton

For timenow.conf, I noticed that on my device it didn't start without a longer sleep period, probably because proximityd hadn't yet completely started (I also had to add respawn 15 3 to proximityd as reported earlier by pierrem.

Thus if it works for you, leave it as is. I will introduce the longer delay as well as fix the permission thing in lucky version 0.13 in a few days.

I might ponder using sudoers instead of rootsh too, but as they say if it ain't broke...

Happy new year and thanks.

Thanks for your response, I noticed that screen displayed with timenow goes off faster then displayed with power button, which makes it little difficult for me to operate media controls, can you guide me where i can change display time?

Thanks buddy and Happy new year, Have fun!!!

please don't change settings.ini in /opt but rather in /home/user/.timenow
it has precedence.

Will give it a try after new year party, Cheers!!!

I changed the value to 15000 ms even which was given as max value there but it didn't work for me.

Not to mention that the /opt version will be overwritten on update

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

@qwazix
Please add a sudoers file and add a one-line post install / post-remove script. Depending on rootsh is really not the best idea.

qwazix 2013-12-31 23:33

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

Ok, but in two steps. First I will push a fix with only the permissions issue, so that I don't annoy the users any more with bugs, and then remove dependancy on rootsh with a nice big warning to save the old .deb in case things go south.

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

Thank qwazix again for this absolutely great app and its ongoing developement and superfast support. In my opinion this is one of the greatest single improvements on such a great phone that N900 is. Maybe the idea of using the proximity sensor to sense the removing from pocket is already used somewhere else, but I havent heard about it anywhere else, so in my opinion this is true innovation. Once again thank you very much.

Great app, however it works for a couple of days then it stops working. It needs a reboot to start working again.

Kossuth 2014-01-12 07:33

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

I have noticed this behavior lately also, but I cant say did it come with the latest versions by qwazix or had I already seen it on the cantruchs fork. I dont have to restart the phone, all that is needed is in terminal to "sudo gainroot" and "start proximityd" and it start to work again.

I havent got the time to properly troubleshoot the situation, but it seems that restarting the timenow.conf does not solve it, only restarting the proximityd does it. It also seems that the proximityd is alive when I restart it to get it workin, because I can also stop it without errors when timenow stops responding.

Is proximityd part of timenow or is it standalone part by someone else? Is there use to try to check any logs or that kind of stuff about the communication between timenow and proximityd?

qwazix 2014-01-20 15:29

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

Proximityd is not part of timenow, it's the same proximity daemon that powers shortcutd, timenow just depends on it.

Kossuth 2014-01-20 18:11

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

BTW since my last post I havent experienced any glitches with timenow, so I havent had any chance to investigate the problem I had for a while. As I'm not sure that it is even related to timenow, so I consider it now cured. Will inform of any new events.

Kossuth 2014-01-22 07:25

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

Ok, now I got timenow in error condition, so it does not show when the proximity sensor is uncovered. I tested that the proximity sensor works during phonecall, so that the screen is blanked when I raise the phone to my ear (and cover the proximity sensor) and the screen lights back up instantly when the sensor is uncovered. I will not try to fix it by restarting the proximityd, so if anyone has any commands/ideas to test where the problem is, I'm open to suggestions.

qwazix 2014-01-24 22:43

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

I can't think of what to test but a start would be to check if proximityd is actually running

Code:

ps aux | grep proximity

Kossuth 2014-01-25 11:09

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

Yes, it is actually the proximityd that has stopped/crashed, because it doesnt show up on ps aux. Should it actually be on some daemon watch, so when it crashes it tries to restart it at least couple of time. Is there a file I could check for the watchlist or its log?

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

Have problem with mine. Doesn't show up when i cover the sensor and the display never goes to automatic lockscreen.

Kossuth 2014-02-16 18:48

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

@Breeze5
The proper function of Timenow should be as follows:

1. You lock the phone with the slider switch next to the headphone socket

2. Screen goes blank

3. You cover the proximity sensor with your finger or by putting the phone in your pocket

4. Nothing happens

5. You uncover the proximity sensor by removing the finger or taking the phone from your pocket

6. The lockscreen is displayed automatically

7. The screen goes blank after timeout or if you cover the proximity sensor again

Could you Breeze5 tell exactly what happens and what not?

Breeze5 2014-03-15 11:59

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

I allways have to write "start proximityd" to get it work and when i leave my phone display on it never goes to mode "Automaticly lockscreen". So i have to do it every time manually with the slider when i put away my phone.

Breeze5 2014-03-15 17:14

Re: [Announce - #MCCXII] Timenow: Proximity enabled lock screen

After unistalling timenow i have the same problem with the screen stays led for 5 min.
Anyone has the same poblem?
