Even overclocking doesn't help Firefox, FasterN9 will NOT be able to improve FireFox as its slowness is caused by the coding.

You need to get Mozilla to work on the speed of the browser, there's nothing FasterN9 can do.

Not to mention the Firefox for MeeGo isn't even an official client. It was built by someone else. Mozilla doesn't love us enough :(

It is official. Mozilla did build it for us officially and then put it into the Nokia Store, as well as Nokia developing a flash player plugin for it officially.

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

afaik its not a mozilla per se build. it was built by romaxa who pushed it thro' nokia store. if you look at the publisher of the app the name is "Firefox" instead of Mozilla or Mozilla Corp.

i did read somewhere that romaxa did it with Mozilla's knowledge but they didn't provide support hence the engine running it is quite old leaving Firefox to always have speed issues.

Flash was supposed to work on the stock browser but due to Nokia's abandonment and only due to the effort of some truly committed Nokia devs did it turn up as a plug-in for Firefox. If not for their efforts we wouldn't even have it as a plug-in.

Ahh, I didn't know the nokia store firefox was posted up by romaxa.

Its a shame we can't get Flash to work on the stock browser, it would be so much more usable :(

Then again Fennec with an updated/current engine would actually be better tbh. Hopefully Romaxa can do this :)

Yeah I'm with U there, could've been nice if the Native Browser had it, it's better and faster browser than Firefox and Opera given to us, as a matter of fact if I experience site problems with the native browser, only then I use Opera, not even Firefox....

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

The engine is not old - it uses the latest codebase. However the UI is not updated much, in comparison with what Mozilla does to the Android branch.

Hmmm, I wonder if it would be possible to rewrite their UI using QML, unless romaxa already has done this.

Just assuming that if it was in QML it would be a hell of a lot smoother then it is.

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

This was proposed for Mozilla, since they already decided to use native UI on Android instead of the XUL UI. But apparently they weren't too interested yet. And previous projects of embedding Gecko as a library were dropped some time ago. Romaxa proposed another approach, embedding Gecko in a separate process, and using IPC to communicate with the UI layer. He published some work on this here:

http://romaxa.info/fennec/IPCEmbedding/

This can work well with Qt UI. If someone wants to help with that - please go ahead.

Hmmm, well im not gonna pretend to know how to code using Qt, but I have 3 months of summer that I have nothing else to do, and I wouldn't mind learning how to, just need to ask Romaxa what I would actually need to do in order for me to create a UI and then him to link it to his Fennec. Anybody got any contact methods for him?

aarggh!!

I've installed the newest version (0.9.7) and now everytime that i put my phone into standby, it wont wake up again. the screen just stays black.

any way how to fix this?
using N950

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

Installing 0.9.7 and destroy wazapp, wazapp doesn't work well with this version. And also, everytime a reset my N9, I have to re-install wazapp because doesn't work anymore.

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

I've run a vnc server on the device, and connected with my laptop.
Seems like if I change the "brightness" of the n950, it will bring back the backlight.

So in other words: the backlight of the screen will set to 0 everytime I've put the phone on standby.

Edit: somehow, now that I changed the screen brightness manually 1 time, it just magically works!

Maybe it has to do something with N9 QTweak? I disabled the automatic brightness before. Could this be related?

Could be. But I had problems with the backlight flickering. I adjusted the brightness manually (just one time) and everything was ok after that. I use N9 Qtweak but did not disable automatic brightness, so I do not think the problem was due to the N9 QTweak hack..

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

Ok, I am trying 0.9.7 version again. Happy to reflash if there is a problem, but fingers crossed it will be good this time. I never got to try it properly due to problems with uninstalling 0.9.4 and 0.9.5.

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

Had to uninstall 0.9.7, because I needed to take some videos. Fastern9 made the video stutter, pretty regularily every 15 seconds or so. After uninstall video recording worked smooth as silk. Maybe check if you could make sure the camera app gets cycles... I have been using these scripts since 0.9.3, I think. Great work!

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

I've just installed 0.9.7 yesterday and no problems for now - and a huge improvement in UI smoothness. I used other versions before nut never had any problems with installing/uninstalling. Traysh - if you want/can tell us what is it the script does that'd be cool - very interested in that :)

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

Testing out 0.9.7 again, hopefully won't get the same media bugs as before :D

Will update post to see if I get any bugs

Im getting reboot loops!!! :(

Strange, I held the power button down, turned it off, turned it on again, and it booted fine :s

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

Could problems with this script encountered by some people be by any chance firmware related? I was playing yesterday with my gf's N9, on which she has a slightly different firmware (we both have pr 1.2 though the exact firmware name vary), and could observe some differences compared to my N9 - more "greenish" tint to the screen color, faster rotations of the home screen (with homescreen settings app) - so it seems firmwares vary slightly IMO.

I wasn't sure if it was FasterN9 who did the message problems or the operator (just changed at the time I used FasterN9) and now uninstalled because I wasn't the only one ;)

Hi,
I feel like living dangerously and want to install this FasterN9.

Where do I find instructions on reflashing the N9?

How do I download the actual file to the device?
do i need first to put it on my Ubuntu and then transfer it to the N9 ? if so what after? how do I find the file and run it?
Yes I am a beginner.....
:o

Help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

So, that PR1.3 is partially released already. How soon do you guys know if we can update it straight or we have to unistall this Fastern9 and wait for it to work with PR1.3?

lifeintheblitz 2012-07-03 00:02

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

I think I would uninstall FasterN9 first, before updating to PR 1.3. Just to be safe. :) In fact, if PR 1.3 is as smooth as some people say it is going to be, I might not use FasterN9 at all, unless the next version makes PR 1.3 even fasterrrrrrr!

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

I noticed that after installing FasterN9, apart from the fact that the phone indeed works faster, the calendar day number icon stopped updating. That's the only issue I'm having. Apart from that the script works great.

koe 2012-07-03 10:12

Re: [Testing needed] FasterN9

DarkSkies, you can check it by typing "status xsession/calendar-icon-update" in terminal.
to start, it's "start xsession/calendar-icon-update"

Seems to work with PR1.3...

Yes looks like it's working with PR1.3 just fine.

And for those wondering, no, PR1.3 didn't make the UI any smoother.

imo, it really did :)

I would like to update to 0.9.4 before installing PR1.3 but cannot find the download. Any idea where to download?

EDIT: Disregard, I had 0.9.3 installed so I upgraded straight to 0.9.7.
