Are there any known issues using FasterN9 1.1.4 on an overclocked device?

* I have only noticed following: after booting my N9 with FasterN9 (1.0.1) it takes really long to open the "Notes" unlike without FasterN9 (starting other Apps doesn't take that long, so there is only a issue with "Notes").

I have my N9 overclocked to 1375 MHz and 1375000 mV (for months and months). I am running Faster N9 version 1.1.14 with no issues at all.

And I just tested the Notes app with no issues at all. Generally, I have found that apps open faster and operate faster, especially conversations app and browser.

I observed this behavior, too. But also without FasterN9 the Notes Application needs very, very long to start after a reboot -- at least sometimes. I didn't get any clue so far what's the reason...

This is true for me, too. And of course a side effect is that the N9 eats the battery charge in high speed. No upgrade from previous version, i.e. several reboots between uninstallation of 1.1.3 and installation of 1.1.4.

I'm in the same situation as Hacker, my N9 doesn't feel like an oven and the notes app runs smoothly (for now).

No malf here :) super fast UI, no problem for now! Just some micro lags while scrolling the event-feed screen but no drama! Great work

Installed over 1.0, no MALF, everything seems ok. Haven't ran long enough to say anything concrete about performance.

But I noticed that there's an extra file leftover from some installation. I don't know if it causes any harm or not:

Code:

~ $ ls -l /etc/init/apps/ | grep -i faster

Sorry to step in here and maybe ask offending/compromising question. Just got my N9 and even have not yet enabled develeoper mode ;)
From first impression, this sounds like speedpatch for N900?

Could someone give me a bit more details (links/key words to posts sufficient), as 1200 posts to read/inpterpret is just too much (for me).
Thanks (and again sorry).

Basically this is the best application for your n9 when it comes to improving response and performance. Just go to first page download the latest version and you are done. 1.14 works Great

Well I've always read that on the N900 not to use the speed patch as it may cause issues with your system. Maybe because its unmaintained etc...

Technically it seems similar as fastern9 is a cgroups mod with i/o scheduler being tweaked too... The main difference I would say is the maintenance of the package. traysh does an excellent job of maintaining it with feedback incorporated into it. Also, there has been no reports of anybody's device being MALF'ed since a long time i.e. since pretty old development versions. Lastly, from what I understand speed patch makes across the board changes for foreground and background apps/services while traysh has a more refined implementation here whereby core apps are given certain priorities, not all background apps have lowered priorities etc...

Usage generally across the userbase varies and for some its possible they don't find fastern9 useful. What I would advice is not to install it on your fresh N9... Instead use your N9 for a week or two with the event feed having feeds to be updated, apps installed etc... After the week or two when you see the lag between scrolling in the 3 main screens, event feed, unresponsiveness while event feed is updating, you should then install FasterN9...

That way if the user experience improves for you it means that FasterN9 is suitable for you... Previous pretty old versions of it had bugs that had the ability to improve the user experience in general but in one or two areas to slow down things... However, traysh has very actively taken feedback on-board and improved it consistently... I would say once it hit the v0.9.7 mark it became a mod that is good without huge bugs and improves the UX for most users... With the latest unstable version too, I've only an issue with the mail app being slow while switching between folders but otherwise no issue; stable versions are slightly more conservative than unstable versions and are generally bug-free with a marked increase in performance...

This is one of those things you don't appreciate in full until you realize what you were missing all this while ;)

Re: [Stable!] FasterN9

Ok after a couple of restarts the overheating has stopped and the performance is great. Still slow while scrolling through txts but that is acceptable. Awesome!

Re: [Stable!] FasterN9

Same here, everything working fast, haven't noticed any 'side effects'.

Today I installed this on my mothers N9 too. She was almost changing back to her old phone, because of the small lag of the N9. She was amazed how quick her phone has bacome, so thanks traysh, she's keeping it :)

Switch your N9 off, than switch it on. When it's ready go one time through the homescreens if you like and then to the bottom in the "app-screen" (side note: the small lag after first scrolling is still there, but for me not a big problem)... If you like you can open a app like "contacts" - it's opening pretty fast, then try to open the "notes" and it will take a while (over 10 sec.).

Ok this is not necessarily a fastern9 bug; I understand what you mean and Notes and Calendar are randomly inflicted with this symptom... I've tried on a clean flash and managed to get Calendar to freeze the system up, when I click on it the first time, for ~10 seconds..

Custom themes at times can cause it as its reading from the theme the styling and may slow the first time... Sometimes the system may be indexing and both calendar and notes need that lag to read from their .db... So I wouldn't put it down to fastern9 just yet, try it for a week or more and this symptom randomly disappears... I haven't had it in quite some time now... My bet would be smartsearch is more likely to cause this than fastern9...

I can confirm a slightly higher idle consumption in 1.1.4, but it is not dramatic. It is still the best version so far.

Awesome work, traysh!

using 1.14 for abt 2 weeks, no issues detected.
I had some prb in the beginning with the alarm clock (alarm ringing, cannot be turned off), however it solved... with patience.
Battery life is ok, UI is fluid, no hangs - perfect.
10/10 recommended.

Re: [Stable!] FasterN9

Installed 1.1.4 everything is awesome and all but I'm getting bugged with the music stuttering(again). I was about to try making that text file that traysh linked 20 or so pages back but I couldn't really find the music store file. Nothing about it in /opt. Only place I could find anything slightly related to it was in /var/lib/dpkg/info which doesn't sound right. Another problem with it is that I don't even know what kind of extension I'm searching for.

Re: [Stable!] FasterN9

I have been using v1.1.4 since it was released and no tracker issues... People should stop blaming things they know nothing much about and should stay in their "home threads" like the wazapp one...

kai_en 2013-01-10 11:48

Anthony, u must have done a combination of things to get your tracker screw up. I m using both 1.1.4 and wazapp and gad no problem thus far. Please reset and if u still have problem using these two apps, then u might have a case.

mpy 2013-01-10 12:52

Re: [Stable!] FasterN9

Where does the wazapp app save the picture?

You can check, if this folder is included in your ~/.config/user-dirs.dir or somehow your config file is screwed up (happened to me once or twice, with no obvious(!) reason). Here is my version:

Code:

# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're
# interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run
# Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
# homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
# absolute path. No other format is supported.
#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs/Downloads"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs/Documents"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs/Music"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs/Pictures"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs/Movies"

Another config to check is ~/.config/tracker/tracker-miner-fs.cfg; especially the entries IndexRecusiveDirectories (here are the the symbolic names defined in above file used) and IgnoredDirectories are important.

mpy 2013-01-10 13:34

Re: [Stable!] FasterN9

I think that should be no problem. But in any case, you can make a backup before:
Code:

cd .config
cp user-dirs.dir user-dirs.dir.bak

You are comfortable with the command line, I hope...

I don't use Whatszap, so do you know where the picture is saved to? If not, you can try
Code:

cd
find . -name "saved.jpg" 2> /dev/null

if you know the name of the image, if not try
Code:

cd
find . -mtime 0 2> /dev/null | xargs ls -trd

which lists all files modified in the last 24 hours, sorted by time, newest at bottom. The command may take some time to display any output!

mpy 2013-01-10 16:27

Re: [Stable!] FasterN9

Sorry, what do you mean? The post above includes some hints, if you don't know where wazapp saves the picture which is not showing up in the gallery.
Do you know to which folder the picture gets saved? (The thirst time this (yet unanswered) question!)

mpy 2013-01-10 17:14

Re: [Stable!] FasterN9

Ok, then make sure, that $HOME/MyDocs/Wazapp (case sensitive -- I assume MyDocs is written with capital D also on your N9?!) is included in the line beginning with IndexRecursiveDirectories= in /home/user/.config/tracker/tracker-miner-fs.cfg, otherwise append it at the end.

Here is an example, probably copy&paste is no good idea here:
Code:

IndexRecursiveDirectories=&DESKTOP;&DOCUMENTS;&DOWNLOAD;&MUSIC;&PICTURES;&VIDEOS;$HOME/MyDocs;$HOME/MyDocs/.sounds;$HOME/MyDocs/.documents;$HOME/MyDocs/.videos;$HOME/MyDocs/.images;$HOME/MyDocs/.camera;$HOME/MyDocs/Wazapp;
# Above this is one line, only one carriage return at the end, not inbetween.

I think the tracker reads in the new config automatically, but I'm not sure. With a reboot your on the safe side.

That's because you have modified the theme or icons of the device not due to fastern9 ;)
