First Time Using Linux..GRUB command line problem
so it seemed like the only way to get my n900 flashed was to use linux..i installed ubuntu 12.04 everything seemed to go fine...i got to the point where i saw my username but was unable to enter my password...i powered down my pc to do a restart...on powering up i got the option to choose which os i wanted to use win7 or ubuntu...i choose ubuntu...it then went to a screen (im guessing a bootloader screen) where something came up about press TAB for options and when i did a whole set of options came up...but the problem is i dont know what next to do...
all im seeing is grub> and i dont know what to enter.... help please |
Re: First Time Using Linux..GRUB command line problem
Just use <Enter> to start your Ubuntu from Grub, the bootloader. No need for any options.

Re: First Time Using Linux..GRUB command line problem
nope..hitting enter doesnt work...
this is what im seeing: "GNU GRUB V1.99-21UBUNTU3 Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possibl command line completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions." makes no sense to me...need to get this working |
Re: First Time Using Linux..GRUB command line problem
So you do not see any list of possible systems to start?
If you just see a grub prompt, then the install of the boot loader had failed. |

Re: First Time Using Linux..GRUB command line problem
Did you try to just wait like 10 seconds or 30 seconds for the possible autostart? Though i do not know the default setting in Ubuntu.
On the other hand you will not need to go through all the linux newbie blues just to flash the phone properly, just start the CD or DVD and do the essential steps. |

You need this procedure https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 and installation disk as well.

Re: First Time Using Linux..GRUB command line problem
Why the heck You think that only way to flash N900 is using Linux?
BTW, for Linux, You can use liveCD/LiveDVd, no need to install, if You don't plan to use it casually. |

Edit: You're right. Looks like there is a host of options now. http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_t...nd_Workarounds To the OP restart and don't press anything except the down arrow key. The options should show if not you need to fix your MBR or set up your chainloader. I will guide you on how to do that but first can I ask the behavior of you PC on boot right now, is it still as you describe in the first post or do you get no options and it boots straight into ubuntu? what happens exactly. |
Re: First Time Using Linux..GRUB command line problem
i did something ill explain...
placed all the necessary files on my usbstick/flashdrive. booted up linux. dragged the files from the usb onto the linux desktop. right-clicked open terminal here. (terminal opens with desktop path) then i typed: sudo dpkg -1 (flasher name).deb (hit enter) here is where it gets funny the flasher seems to start installing and a pop up of something along the lines of "maemo flasher tool property of Nokia etc" comes up with "Configuring Tool" in red at the top. However im unable to click "ok" and the flasher just stalls at that point. i also tried to open the terminal and did the same commands but i get "package in use" no matter how long i wait nothing seems to install...suggestions? |
Re: First Time Using Linux..GRUB command line problem
supergrub usb-stick or -CD is nice to have available when booting Linux fails.

Re: First Time Using Linux..GRUB command line problem
Yeah, the windows maemo flasher wiki was updated some time ago now. I have always flashed the n900 on my win7 64bit without any problems, where my ubuntu partition gave me no end of grief.
@RobertHall, have you tried the windows flasher? |
