One theory is to wait one month WITHOUT any attempt to register with that number. But this does not always work.
So the only solution for the registration problem is to send an email to support@whatsapp.com asking to "unblock" your number. They will respond you in approximately 10 days saying that they unblocked your number.
DON'T say that you have a N9. Just tell them you have an Android phone and write them your number.
I had the same problem with the registration failure and it was the ONLY SOLUTION. No Wazapp update will fix your problem. And that problem is result of many attempts for registration.

If you want, try to register with a different (brand new) number and you will see that you will receive the activation code normally.

Hope I helped you.

ps: when you will try to register again (after they unblock your number) use a GOOD WiFi connection and not a 3G.

Is the size increase and the colour needed? Keep things simple.

Re: [Announce] Wazapp Public Beta for N9

For people who are facing crashes, can you try this?

Find this in protocoltreenode.py:
Code:

        def readInt16(self,i,socketOnly=0):
                intTop = i.read(socketOnly);
                intBot = i.read(socketOnly);
                #Utilities.debug(str(intTop)+"------------"+str(intBot));
                value = (intTop << 8) + intBot;
                return value;

And replace with:
Code:

        def readInt16(self,i,socketOnly=0):
                intTop = i.read(socketOnly);
                intBot = i.read(socketOnly);
                #Utilities.debug(str(intTop)+"------------"+str(intBot));
                value = (intTop << 8) + intBot;
                if value is not None:
                        return value;
                else:
                        return "";

I installed 0.2.6, registered and now I have three tabs:
  • Chats, that says "No conversations yet"
  • Contacts, that says "No contacts yet. Try to resync"
  • Settings with four options: Sync Contacts, Invert Colors, About, Quit
How can I add a contact and how can I start a chat? Is there a guide/help/FAQ anywhere?

Of course not! The app only syncs you contacts therewith you can use your contacts in "Wazapp". Otherwise you can't have contacts in wazapp. Simple thing. :rolleyes:

EDIT: @Adrenaline

Yes, you are right but this is a usual thing and will not be abused. And only your own phone number.

To find the contacts in your phonebook that have Whatsapp, you need to have both datasets in the same place to do the comparison. So either you:
  • upload your contacts to their server, compare there and send the results back to your phone
  • download the entire Whatsapp user database to your phone and compare it on your phone to your address book. (obviously, that's NOT going to happen)

Of course you could. By adding your contacts manually, like any other IM system does.

Oh, yes, that's right. I thought in a wrong way. But I don't think, that this is a problem. Otherwise you shouldn't use whatsapp if you are afraid of it.

Then I think this App is not designed for you, you too import and have the Phone Numbers of President Obama & Celine Dion stored in your phone. They'll definately get abused! Use SMS & Skype! :confused:

Re: [Announce] Wazapp Public Beta for N9

You are talking like it's like a big problem

Wazapp, like official whatsapp application, just send the phone numbers, JUST THE NUMBERS, without name, mail address and everything else you have stored in your phone.
Then whatsapp server replies you wich of them has registered in their server.

What can they do to you or your contacts getting just the number?
The same they can do just making random numbers!
It's insane!

mämo 2012-06-05 19:20

Re: [Announce] Wazapp Public Beta for N9

Yea, this is not cool.

At the very least, you need to tell people what the app is doing with my private data, where it sends it and give me some reassurance as to how it's going to be used ... before I run the app.

I mean, since this is a 3rd-party app, I don't even know whether my address book goes straight to Whatsapp or gets routed through a relay where the app author gets his hands on all Wazapp user data. I'm not saying that's what tgalal does, but without digging through source code or sniffing traffic I have no way of confirming and as a regular user, I don't have the knowledge to do that.

I understand this is beta, but perhaps a warning during installation and a privacy policy on the website would be a good idea?

Apparently none of my contacts use Whatsapp anyway, so I'm going to delete it. I'm sure the people who gave me their phone numbers would also prefer me not spreading them to unknown places.

As an app, do what you have to do, but disclose what you're going to be doing so people can make informed decisions.

Otherwise it's a slippery slope. Here, it's "just the number", the next app claims "oh, it's just emails" or "oh, it's just names" ... Where do you draw the line?

My contacts are private data and at least I want to be informed before anyone grabs those out of my phone.

He just wanted a working whatsapp client on the N950.

Stop freaking out, you're just becoming annoying.

This app doesn't get the name of the contact
What can they do with the number?
And maybe you don't know, but your friends phone numbers already exists in whatsapp database for sure, and that's the reason you want wazapp.
Or you want to use this app just to talk with yourself?

Honestly, your points are completely unrelated to this thread.

Go to WhatsApp directly and moan at them, also your reasons are pretty stupid.

Peoples numbers and more can be obtained through other methods which is why we all get the stupid cold calls from salesmen. All this does is a comparison of numbers, random pieces of binary.

Take your non relevance to a place where it is wanted, your issue is with how WhatsApp works, nothing to do with Wazapp!

If you don't like it, don't use it, simple as. Then again, you should also not use ANY online service as information about you and your contacts can be access by other services such as Twitter and Facebook..

You sound like you expect someone to find your girlfriend's number and call her. Sharing a number with no contact info is not dangerous at all. Even if they have the number and try to contact your provider in order to get your personal info (name, address, etc), they'd be denied.

BTW, there are millions of whatsapp and viber users sharing their numbers. Are they in any kind of danger? It's not like you share your credit card number, as was the case with Sony and Playstation Network.

Your making an elephant out of an ant in this situation.

Actually there is this nice "By registering, you agree to Whatsapp's Terms of service" that appears in almost every registration screen, and links to Whatsapp's terms of service. So actually I do tell people. So it would be your problem if you're one of those who just agrees to any terms of service without reading :P. But at least don't complain afterwards.

It's a big problem for me. I would punch all the friends that sent my phone number to a company that use the laws from California and USA and not the ones from Europe, much more restrictive with privacy data. But I don't want to lose my friends so I just blamed on them and I asked to Whatsapp Inc for removing my phone number from their databases.

I don't use my real data in any service with a bad privacy policy. I removed most of my data from facebook (wich policy I didn't accept until they changed it because lot of complaints). And I don't use untrusted facebook aplications (wich are the most of them XD). Well, I use paypal, who now give your data to a lot of financial companies :S

Whatsapp's privacy policy is the worst I saw. It can even change without notice the users (that's illegal in my country, Spain) , and it is considered accepted if the user continue using it after the change. They say that the user is responsible of re-reading from time to time their privacy policy and search for changes from the older one. wtf?

In PeterBornx Java Port I used a false IMEI and a alias phone number from fonyou.com to my real number. In Yappari I have to use my real IMEI but I continue using not my real number.

I tried to register a completely false phone number but the free SMS services I tried didn't work.

You can do that in Peterbjornx Java port. (works in N900 and PC and anywhere where you can run a .jar).

In Yappari just contacts with international prefix are added to your contact list.

But two of them will add synchronization with Whatsapp servers.

You can second my wazaap issue asking for an option to not sync: https://github.com/tgalal/wazapp/issues/17

By the way, you don't get any contacts in wazaap contacts list maybe because you need to add international prefix to all of them. Thats a need of whatsapp protocol.

Okay honestly, its still a pointless discussion, if the policy and terms didn't apply to the EU's strict privacy laws, then WhatsApp WOULDNT BE IN THE EU!

But surprise surprise, it is, meaning it passed the EU's prying eye with no issues.

As for conversation and data, you do realise the all texts/ims/facebook chats/skypes/everything is monitored and if need be can be accessed by anybody with authority to do so such as Intelligence Agencies or Local Police with warrants as well as other random agencies.

Go start a thread in the off-topic section about how you hate that all your data is being 'stolen' It is a price we have to pay to use technology, its not exactly like they can ruin your life, its a phone number :P

If you don't understand a basic IM app like this, you should put down your current phone, and go get a Nokia 3310..

How about you get off your butt and google what the app is.. Instead of expecting somebody here to spoon feed you..

ALSO compared to using normal 3G for Data, WiFi actually uses much less power when left on in the same manner due to a number of power saving methods built into the protocols.. Don't post about things you clearly don't understand.

No, they don't and it isn't. Well, maybe now they do, after I inadvertently stumbled into this. Apparently none of my existing contacts use Whatsapp, so thats why I see "No contacts yet. Try to resync". I wanted to try out this app after all the hype around here to see if I can suggest it to some close friends as SMS or IM substitute. I expected to be able to add those friends manually.

OK, I misunderstood the underlying technology and I know Wazapp is simply relying on the Whatsapp platform. But that's not the point.

What I don't understand is what you all get up in a huffy about someone asking for proper disclosure. I'm not saying the app shouldn't do what it does. I'm not trying to piss on your parade. All I'm saying is, include a dialog that says
"Running this app will upload your phone book to Whatsapp servers. Tap to agree."
Not something buried in 10 pages of "Terms & Conditions" legalese.

Is that too much to ask? Would it make the app any less useful for you guys? You are basically arguing "No, we MUST do this sneakily under the hood, without telling the user. We will absolutely not be upfront about it."
Why?

Maybe it would give some people pause and lead them to not sign up. But this is a 3rd-party app - tgalal, why do you care? You're not making any money from people using or not using the Whatsapp platform via your app. So what if a few drop out?

I actually did some digging and found Path did a similar thing not too long ago and they ended up apologizing profusely:
http://blog.path.com/post/17274932484/we-are-sorry

That story actually caused quite a bit of uproar and a lot of other companies got caught up in it and changed their policies:
http://allthingsd.com/20120215/follo...up-their-acts/

Finally, even Apple now requires apps to get explicit permission before accessing contact data:

Say what you want about Apple and the iPhone, but in this case, why not follow that example?

You can do that in Peterbjornx Java port. (works in N900 and PC and anywhere where you can run a .jar).

In Yappari just contacts with international prefix are added to your contact list.

But two of them will add synchronization with Whatsapp servers.

You can second my wazaap issue asking for an option to not sync: https://github.com/tgalal/wazapp/issues/17

By the way, you don't get any contacts in wazaap contacts list maybe because you need to add international prefix to all of them. Thats a need of whatsapp protocol.

Completely defeats the point of the app, if this is the functions you want, go use Skype/MSN/FB Chat/Other Traditional IM...

The main point of this app is to take that extra step of having to manually type in an email or username or even a PIN out of the equation, and allow your phonebook contacts to be straight away available to chat to.

Its how the app functions, honestly if you don't like the way it functions and you want to add friends manually, then use the MANY alternatives that function that way.

mämo and malkavian, this is the way the official app works, if you have a problem then go to whatsapp, the aim of this app is only to replicate an already existing app.
