Right. Well, maybe after all it is just not a good idea to combine these 4 activities under the same umbrella.

If you feel more comfortable having only the Code Competition and the Community Awards here so be it. I can organize the Qt 5 stuff in Qt Project. Not sure about Nokia Store since it's quite off the mark in Qt Project and most of the potential developers are here. Perhaps I'll just open an informal thread and wiki page here anyway, without connecting this activity with the rest, and that's it.

You tell me. I just want to get things done and start.

I'm a web developer by trade, and would happily create a very simple landing page on a domain (e.g. maemodeviceprogram.org) with an introductory announcement and big chunky links to the 4 activities on the different sites - it would give people one place to link to.

Of course, if it were to still be centralised on maemo.org (my personal preference) - then we're better to just link it all here and not bother with a landing page.

I deeply disagree because :
- the Nokia Store awards and Qt5 awards are only related to Nokia N9/N950;
- Maemo.org is the main site, forum, etc for MeeGo Harmattan users;
- Nokia N9 is the unique choice of commercial smartphone to test & run Qt 5 (alpha for the moment). I am happy to have my N9 as a tool to taste the developer tools of 2013.

The Maemo community should be open to the 4 awards being hosted here.

SD why are you trying to move half of the devices out of maemo.org? Nokia has been kind enough to provide a small number of devices for us and Quim was so clear that the devices are for us that he named the program after maemo.org. Please state your reasoning for that, and other people please speak up, we are about to make a big mistake here.

Community apps to the store and Qt5 are perfectly on topic here.

I'm not. Either way is fine. I just don't want the maemo.org forum used as the application mechanism is all. My reasoning is that we've always used the wiki for such programs. And these two programs are not limited to maemo.org members.

That is perfectly fine by me. I just feel moving the program outside maemo.org is not to our benefit. The wiki is a very good solution imho.

Isn't someone registered at maemo.org (and developing applications for Harmattan with Qt 4 or Qt 5) a “community member”? If not, what else is needed?

SD69, in your second answers you say it's a preference of wiki vs forum, but your first answers seem to point somewhere else, unclear to me. I can please you better if I understand what is the problem you really are concerned about.

For instance, if the problem you see is having me (a Nokia representative and not a pure communty member, as you have put it previously) then fine, I have no problem delegating this task to someone else. Really, I have many other tasks in my ToDo and I'd welcome help. If the problem is another please let me know.

Anyway, I will wait for decisions and instructions from the council.

Anyone registered at maemo.org is a community member.

These devices are not reserved exclusively for "us" maemo.org members under these two programs, one of which explicitly says "other communities" may participate as well, as was said previously in the thread. (i'm not criticizing the programs at all you understand, just pointing this out.)

Hey, hey, wait a second. Qgil, please, do not move QT5 and Nokia Store program out of maemo.org. Things presented here by SD69, are his personal opinions - just like You're writing as Community member, not Nokia representative, most of the time - and not necessary view of whole Council.

We have internal meeting today, and we will straight this out, but, one thing is known for sure - maemo.org isn't (anymore?) related only to Fremantle devices.

For now, Council's point of view is that submitting applications for *any* category should be done via mailing list or other way, but *not* via a TMO thread. This *doesn't* mean, that there can't be thread announcing start and details of each category, here, on TMO.

If You want more details, wait up to 3 hours, but I can assure You, that no one want those 2 categories excluded from maemo.org. It would be absurd.

fwiw submissions for Nokia Store & Qt 5 candidates via mailing list sounds like the worst combination? Extra hassle for people to register and extra hassle for all subscribers receiving all the candidates + potential discussions.

That model might work though for the Community Awards since it makes sense that a community champion is subscribed to the maemo-community list and since it's the Council processing and deciding there isn't necessarily too much to discuss.

Submitting projects via wiki page is the best way to have all the information at sight. Complemented with a forum thread that can be followed discretely by whoever cares about the specific activity and can be fully ignored by all the rest.

I hope this proposal finds a balance between all the concerns.

qgil, it sounds fine. As a Council's chair, I've been granted right to speak here Council's behalf, and we already have common answer:

1. All four categories are welcome in maemo.org.

2. Coding Competition is organized already, by appropriate body.

3. QT5 and Nokia Store is organized by You (qgil), so it's up to You to decide best way (which, it seems, You've already did). If You use TMO, mailing list, Wiki or whatever, it's OK for Council.

Honestly, I thing that it's mutually profitable for every party interested, to make QT5 and Nokia Store projects feel like home here. Additionally, Your approach by using wiki for submissions and thread on TMO for announcing/discussion/whatever is logical. I would also suggest announcing it officially on Community mailinglist - but it's up to You and You've probably thought about it already.

As for Community Awards, it have been decided, that:

1. Receiving submissions will start at Monday, 28 May, 00:00 UTC. It will last for 3 weeks.

2. Self-submissions allowed, *only*, via community mailing list *only*. Submissions may contain rationale/"my life story with Maemo/whatever, but it's not required.

3. Submission must contain info, if someone is interested *only* in N950 or N9 (so, in case of not enough devices of preferred type, no prize), or will be satisfied by any type of prize.

4. Community Awards are granted for past deeds, so no future projects/promises, etc are took into account by Council.

5. People that received N950's in any form before (dev programs, etc) can't submit for / receive another one , but they *can* submit for N9.

6. Council will choose winners in it's discretion, in no more than a week time (so winners will be announced no more than 4 weeks after starting receiving submissions) - could be less.

Many active members (till now or until the recent past) don't necessarily subscribe to the mail-list, or actively follow IRC channels etc.
That is generally a smaller sub-set of users, whom aren't necessarily more worthy...
Some will refer to the mail-list details in that thread, just for the purposes of nominating etc.

I'm part the creator of the TFL (Transport for London) app, my app is on the Ovi store here:

I also have a free version coming soon (just a question of releasing it - next week or so). There is also likely to be Symbian app as well.

It may not be most popular app in the world, but the audience is only people living in London and owing Nokia N9's - which is small anyway! But it is a useful app.

On the cards for me is a N9 eBay app and possibly others.

I've been a member on this forum for quite some time, back when there was no such thing as the N900 or N9. In the good old days of the N770, N800 and N810, back when this forum was still called internet tablet talk.

I would love a N950 - it would allow me to work with the command line SO much better!

Only 100 devices - seems a bit stingy on Nokia's part? :D

Hi

I would like to make Proton SDK (http://www.protonsdk.com/) support MeeGo Harmattan. In the process I would also get one game ported to N9/N950. Other games done with Proton could then follow.

But I feel this project doesn't fit in any of the four categories in this program. Is this really so or am I misunderstanding something?

PS. I already made (part of) the Linux support to Proton - I'm guessing getting it to work on MeeGo should be quite attainable.

What happens if Nokia Store and Qt 5 activities participants prefer N9 in higher numbers than initially planned? Should we stick to the numbers agreed (15 N9 / 10 N950) for each anyway or do the Comunity Awards and/or the Code Competition welcome more N950s?

This N9 or N950 choice has introduced more than a bit of complexity. We could have simply said you'll get one or the other instead of taking preferences. I'd rather not complicate it further by trying to alter the ratio now. Also, I don't want to change things after the activities have started.

The coding competition would welcome another n950 if possible. The initial proposal for the competition revolved around the idea of 10 categories which was a perfect fit for the 10 N950s the equal share would give us. Since then, there's been a consensus to lower the amount of categories and we're finding it harder to share the 10 out more evenly. The last proposal for categories and device split we had was roughly:

1. Desktop, System & Utilities (2 N950, 2 N9)
2. Games, Graphics & Multimedia (2 M950, 2 N9)
3. Network & Communications (2 N950, 2 N9)
4. Location & Navigation (2 N950, 2 N9)
5. Other (2 N950, 2 N9)
6. Updates to existing apps (3 N9)
7. Beginners (made up of entries from categories 1-5) (2 N9)

However we have had feedback from beginners that they are a little disappointed that, although they can compete for 2 N950s in each category, that we haven't got a N950 specificaly dedicated to the beginners prize. So i promised i would reach out and ask if it would be possible at this late stage to swap one of out N9 allocation for another n950.. is that something we could still do?

i think it would be really appreciated by new developers as the N950 is very aspirational for them. If it's not possible, we'll understand and look to juggle the categories/device split a little more. Looking at the wiki for the community awards it appears that so far there are 8 requesting n950 only, 19 requesting n9, and 18 happy with either - perhaps a swap in this case would be mutually beneficial? :)

No, just no.

The N950 is a highly desirable device. Why should the number of hoops and jumps to clear to win be lowered just so a beginner can aspire to have a device he cannot target his appz to?

To say the N950s are prizes for the big boys only is like saying the gold medals at the Olympics are for the big boys only.

Thanks for your feedback vi_. It's clear we have a difference of opinion on what the N950 can be used for, but that's ok - all views are good :) Although if i understand your original position correctly you argued that the coding competition should have N9s only and no N950s, that view point wouldn't be so good :p;)

A huge part of what we aim to do with our coding competition is to get beginners onboard - it grows the development base and keeps the platform current and fresh for everyone here imo. We all start somewhere, and from little acorns giant oaks can grow :) If we can use an extra N950 as a carrot to encourage some more developers to start developing for our devices, then i think we should. It's a little unfair to suggest we're lowering the criteria for obtaining one - don't forget the winners will have proven themselves as developers to the community and would surely be worthy of the 'official' developer device ;)

I think I know what you mean about the gold medal analogy, but i don't believe keeping the n950s in the hands of the 'big boys only' benefits the community, Let's spread them around a bit more imo, but still (as far as the coding competition is concerned) to developers who deserve them..

So we'd like to keep our request with the council to see if it could be possible to add 1 extra N950 to our allocation, in return for a N9 from our allocation. After taking all views onboard I'm sure they will give us a 'yes' or a 'no' and whatever the response we'll take it from there. No harm in asking :)
