suspend/hibernate functionality
 

I am originally a zaurus user, since owning n800 and 770, I found myself addicted in using the internet tablet, mainly for its superb lcd and opera. BuT i do like one feature that zaurus provides: suspend. PresS the power button, it will suspend the z, and recover very quickly with another press the button. For n800, the power button provides less useful features, i will always turn off it to save power, which then will take at least 30 seconds reboot. any simple solution to provide the suspend functionality? Thanks.

I was also a Zaurus user, and the functionality can be had here, too.

In a nutshell, I think the trick is to enable "Soft poweroff", by uncommenting the last sections of /etc/systemui/systemui.xml. To get functionality exactly like the Zaurus, edit /etc/mce/mce.ini and set the PowerKeyLongAction to softpoweroff. That way, holding down the "Power" key should do the same thing as holding the "Cancel" key did on the Zaurus.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't done much editing of mce.ini, but one of the first things I do when I reflash the N800 is to edit systemui.xml to enable Soft Poweroff, and move that item to the top, so that I can put it to sleep by pressing Power, Enter.

I still have my Zaurus even though it's been relegated to a network troubleshooting tool....

THe same type of suspend feature can be had on the IT, Ald is right on track.

I'm still a Zaurus user. I still have my Zauruses, SL-C3200, SL-5500. But recently both of them haven't been charged for quite long since I can use n800. Their integrated keyboard design is great! I'm often annoyed by the IT's unwanted appearing of the software keyboard in some circumstances.

How, exactly, do I uncomment the relevant section, once I get the file open?

Also, do I understand correctly that this new "sleep" state is power-conserving, yet quick start-up?

Soft-poweroff doesn't /really/ save you much (if any) power over the built-in power management: which is why it's commented out by default.

It's mostly useful to give yourself some piece of mind, but is basically the same as the screen & key lock.

It's not the powersaving that is important, rather than the fact that it can be invoked with longkeypress, thus giving user a one-key solution to putting the tablet to sleep and waking it up again.

(What an awful typo: "piece of mind", I'd be turning in my editor grave if I wasn't now an IT consultant ;-))

Agreed - that's why I've got it mapped to short keypress, although there's no reason lock keys & screen couldn't similarly be locked.

Now, when we've got more flexible power management (see recent thread on maemo-developers) and GeoClue, I'll be able to get my tablet to mute all sounds and go dark when I press the key at home, or go offline, go dark and keep alarms enabled when in a hotel.

Ahh. How about it dimming the lights, close the curtains, go online and connect to that "special" site when you're in the bedroom?[*]

There's so many useful things waiting to be done with GeoClue...
