Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
My n9 slipped out my hand and the screen broke. I can't decided if I should get another n9 or the 808 pureview.
|
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
Good question....
|
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
Buy a new screen from ebay, easily fitted for around £100/$150 depending where you're from.
|
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
808 is aimed to be a camera more than a smartphone :D
|
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
The amount of money it would cost to fix the screen, I could probably get a new n9.
|
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
If it was me I would go for the 808. I'm more of a camera type, that got caught up in the exciting world of modding/tweaking/hacking and hoped that the N9's camera would've given me a better experience than it did.
Symbian would also cover my needs of a phone (smartphone if you wish). Regards Dousan... |

Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
As much as I do love my N9, if I was to be back to buying decisions again now with the release of the 808 just around the corner, it would be the 808 on its way to my pocket.
I admit I prefer MeeGo/Harmattan to Symbian, but only really in slickness, Symbian is still fine for my taste and that camera along with interchangable battery would be enough to sway me over. Also the idea of owning the final Symbian flagship device is nice, as someone that has enjoyed that OS for years. |
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
After owning an n9, I don't think I can ever use any other OS that doesn't have the Swipe UI. The only thing that I feel appealing on the 808 pureview is the camera.

Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
I've really tried to give Symbian a shot with a few phones over the last couple of years (C3-01, E7, N8, 700), and I still have an N810, N900, N950 (and just in the last few weeks, an N9) but the N900 and N9 have just been head and shoulders above any of the Symbian phones.
I really love the keyboard on the N900, but the N9 has won me over with its CalDav support (I have an MfE calendar, and three Google/CalDav calendars on my N9, finally all my calendars on one device, in the same calendar app), Swype, and it's just a really nice phone. It would be nice if the N9 had a few more commercial games... current Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, etc... and maybe some clients for DRM content (Netflix streaming or similar), but for all of Symbian's nice improvements lately, I still lose more with Symbian than I gain with Maemo and Meego/Harmattan. |
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
I too prefer maemo and meego to symbian.
|
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
Symbian is what killed Nokia brand
|
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
It's a hard decision as the 808 has a few features the N9 doesn't have, such as hdmi out and USB on the go. That camera is very very appealing. Had i not bought a second N9 a few months ago as a spare, I'd be getting the 808 to use as a second phone
|
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
Neither. They both suck, Symbian more than Meego.....both not competitive
|
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
I have both, and I prefer MeeGo over symbian.. but...the 808's camera is amazing, so this can be a dealer breaker for people who love taking pictures.

Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
I have had Symbian smartphones for a long time and whilst in some ways I felt the N9 was a step down from S^3 handsets (lack of vpn, usb-otg, expandable memory and less "mainstream" app), I still think once you have an N9 and know you are not the app type, it is hard to move away from it.
I pick up an iphone and try to swipe apps or swipe down the keyboard - its not happening. Swipe UI is ridiculously simple yet powerful, elegant and something that makes the phone stand out in amongst the generic slabs of glass out there. If you are a camera guy, 808 ofcourse but if its a quality nokia handset you want, the N9 - no question. |

My ideal phone would be the body, built in connectivity hardware, and camera tech of the Pureview 808 combined with the N9's OS and inherent better screen resolution support. Granted I haven't tested the 808 yet but it has at least an anti slippery coating and more ergonomic design than the N9. Having swapped my N9 for the N8 has 3 advantages: -my future 808 will feel very familiar and great camera software currently available on Symbian Belle will be ported in no time. -thanks to the N8 I have a lot of great pictures that were a pleasure to take and that the N9 would never have delivered in equal quality and with same ease. -every day after spending some time with my N8 phone I can feel amazed by the genius desktop computer feel they have squeezed in the N900. If I was only to use the N900 I would keep waiting for the never coming update. To take some distance is good for keeping the flame in the relationship |
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
I've also been deciding between the N9 and 808.
I'm coming from using the N900 from launch to August 2011, then switching to an N8 so that I wouldn't have to carry both a smartphone and a camera while traveling or going to social events. I don't use apps - I've always thought the best solution is to have as close to a desktop-class web browser as you can get on your mobile device (nothing has yet made me forget the N900 in that regard). I use a podcasting client, but that's about it. My only source of dissatisfaction with the N8 is that I multitask on my phone constantly and my N8 has become prone to fits of extreme slowdown and unreliability as new software (updates to the OS and web browser) has come to ask more of the hardware. I miss many opportunities to use that wonderful camera because it takes too long to load the camera app and to go from one shot to the next. I just need a more powerful device. I tried the N9 for a few days last week and ended up sending it back. If either the software functionality or the camera had been a bit better, I would have kept the device and lived with the trade-offs. The image quality of the camera on the N9 is pretty good. It's a noticeable step down from the N8 but certainly more than acceptable in good lighting. However, in low-light the performance dropped much more than I felt comfortable with having come from the N8. Unlike the N8, however, I could rely on getting the camera loaded quickly and taking a lot of shots rapidly (a must for making sure that you get at least one shot that is properly focused, a task I find too hard to do on any small device screen). The gaps in software concerned media playback and web browsing. I couldn't watch the videos that I'd taken on my N8. Worse, I couldn't even open panoramic images that I'd taken on the N8 because the files were too large. I could perform both of these functions on the N8, of course. What's more, I found Opera Mobile 12 on the N8 to be a much better web browser than anything on the N9. I could still see myself going back to the N9 if a better browser is released before I get a chance to buy an 808; I'm in the US, so it may be several weeks or even months yet. The limited picture and video viewing will still sting, but I could work around it or come to live with it. The lack of HDMI out will sting, but I could come to live with it. But the browser really has to be as good or better than what the 808 will have. If that doesn't happen, I'll be getting an 808 (and I do not look forward to seeing Nokia Belle's 360x640 resolution on a four inch screen...). |
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
I know it can be a bit confusing chasing internet discussions related to the N9, and keeping track of features/apps without a device in hand, but Opera Mobile 11.5 and Firefox 12.0 are both available for the N9 in the Nokia/Ovi Store now.
Also, I agree with the N8 vs N9 camera drawbacks, but I think that's more of a testament to how great the N8 camera still is, compared to almost any other mobile device. The latest round of Microsoft Mobile Apps on Symbian^3 are a nice perk for document viewing and editing (I have Documents To Go on my n900), but I haven't really verified what's viewable with the read-only Documents app on the N9. I mostly use the N9 (daily) for light email reading, keeping track of calendars/meetings, playing some games at lunch, watching a couple of video podcasts, limited web browsing, and a few phone calls. Funny thing, I still use my N900 at home as a dedicated Skype phone over wifi, since my cell reception is really horrible at home, even though I generally have a great (T-Mobile) data connection on my N9 the rest of the day for everything else. I'm still curious about the 808, and I could still see buying an 808 as a dedicated camera and media/internet device, but probably not as a phone or device for work (mostly because of the current calendar deficiencies vs the N9). All that said, I'm still thrilled with the Qt support across all of the Symbian^3 and Maemo/Meego devices, and I've built and tested platform-neutral packages on the N810, N900, N950, and N9 (and desktop linux and OS X)... and it's always nice to see the UI bits translated to the native UIs for each phone, with the same code. Of course there are benefits to using the N900-specific UI stacks, QML, etc... but it's still possible to reuse a ton of Qt code and target several platforms with minimal tweaks. |

Symbian will still be around when it'll be gone :D that is, when m$ will have folded its mobile phone planes & decided... to buy Blackberry or WebOS just like they bought
that bunch of m0##0ns never created anything of value if they are serious about getting into the mobile phone market, they'll have to buy an OS... or let the NOKIA engineers rewrite it completely ¦-))))))))))))))))) to the OP i'll get a 808 PV with my contract renewal this summer & wait for the N9 (N950?) successor probably for the contract renewal in two years  |
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
i hate symbian, n9 is much better.
i never used symbian^3 but i couldnt after n97. i would get the European version of the lumia 900. i have been using the lumia 900 for att and the screen is so nice. its easy on the eyes. typing is better (faster, more accurate) if you have big hands. overall, besides Bluetooth sharing and multitasking, its a great phone. when will nokia come with a business windows phone? All i ever wanted was an e7 with harmattan. |
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
It really depends on whether you actually are interested in photography, if you are and snap quite a lot then I'd say pureview(rather, i'd suggest you can buy a proper cam itself ;) )
In either case, have you tried using pureview? I find holding the devices in either hand will help you make the right decision :D |

All the hands-on reports of 808 camera use that hit the web in the last day or so have now really piqued my curiosity for the 808. |
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
Got my lumia 800 yesterday. What strikes me, and is rather surprising is how similar it is to the N9. Better or worse, I honestly don't know. Much better email, contacts, browser, but swipe and multitasking sort of stick in my head.
Nokia comes with several pureview phones now, and they hah confirmed Carla is coming. I have decided to pass the 808 for now. Except for the camera, it's minimal upgrading from the N8. |

Also Pureview 808 is nothing close to N97.. The N97 didn't even have a gpu!... You can't really judge the 808 pureview because of your N97 experience.. Btw, I had an N97 (and still have it turned off in the drawer).. And I have an N8, and they are both VERY different phones (software-wise and hardware-wise of course)... |

The Belle FP1 update is supposed to bring features such as new set of widgets, improved browser with HTML5 support, Dolby Headphone, new version of Nokia Maps, improved notification bar and multitasking view, and the Microsoft Apps. The update will also increase the clock speed on the Nokia 700 and 701 from 1GHz to 1.3GHz. That's one hell of an update pack if true |
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
nokia belle has many great apps from n9!
|
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
if u can go for 808 ..try it...u already have N9....get difference..
|
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
i have a n9 and recently bought a used N8.
I find the N8 more usable than the N9, especially with a better camera. To be honest, the 808 at $699 USD is way too expensive....you can get a used N8 for under $200 USD. yes, the N8 is slower and less ram and shitter camera than 808 but still worth it in my opinion. the N9's hardware is fantastic..looks great...and love the curve display and calendar capabilities. but as of now, my daily has been the N8 and the N9 has been collecting dust. |
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
Only thing I really miss from my N8 is the camera but I'm learning the way to relative contentedness with my N9. I'm not a huge app user, the phone does mostly everything I really want, my calendars are all sync'd up (needed goosync on my N8). I love the contacts and IM contacts integration. I wish I could just dial and search like the N8 though.
I missed google maps but that gap is being broken down now. I'll probably eventually get the 808 just because... |
Re: Nokia n9 or Nokia 808 Pureview
there is no stardict app for pureview, that is sad
