[Announce] Coding competition 2012 starts June 11th, we want your application!

[Edit: This thread is related to the 2012 competiton which is now finished. Stay tuned to maemo.org for news on any competition for 2013.]
http://talk.maemo.org/maemo/resource...ompetition.png

Hi all, Im pleased to announce that the maemo.org Coding Competition for 2012 starts next week!

Beginning Monday 11th June, and running for 3 months, new applications for Maemo and MeeGo Harmattan devices (and significant updates to existing ones) will be eligible to enter in this years competition. Whether you are an experienced developer or a beginner on your very first application, we have a category that suits you and your application!

Nokia has generously donated 14 N950s and 11 N9s that we will assign to the winners and runner ups across the various categories. There will also be a community bounty made up of individual donations which will also be shared out amongst the best placed entries.

Entry is free, so I would encourage you to check out the competition wiki for further details:

http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo.org_coding_competition_2012

If there are any questions we have a discussion thread for the competition at http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=83761

Thanks for your interest, we can't wait to see what you'll develop for us :)

Ok, im in, with a classic strategy game that will hopefully be (nearly)all-platform. Ofcourse, if it does take off and i get millions of users, i may have to revisit hosting the online part on my own cheap VPS!

Great! I had great time while I was developing my open-source app location2sms for the coding competition in 2011 and I plan to participate again this year.

I already have in mind two ideas for simple apps. I'll also might register location2sms at the updates section because there are several new features since the last coding competition :) .

I had written a GDocs client few months ago (my first Harmattan and even mobile app ever) which after some initial effort I didn't pursue further due to lack of time/interest.

Would this still be eligible to enter the competition despite having "released" an app preview back then?

That sounds great piggz, I'll look forward to trying it out

By the way, while our submission entry page is being updated from the 2011 competition, we added a new 'Participants' table to the wiki. Feel free to add your name to it. It's for us organisers to remember who's interested in taking part so we can reach out directly with any info/updates to the competition and make sure your application is included.

(Edit: I just seen marrat is already on there, good work marrat!)

Awesome, glad to have you back leon.anavi! Sounds like you're going to be spoiling us with a selection of apps and updates - which we love cos we like to be spoiled :D

Hi marrat, it sounds like your GDocs client probably wouldn't be included in one of the 5 categories for new applications if it has been released already I'm afraid. However, if you were to update your application it could be included in the "updates.." category. Maybe it will give you a boost to finish it off or add some new functionality? it does sound like a great application and the type we'd like in our competition so it would be great to include it :)

Ofcourse, as you've already demonstrated your skills with the GDocs client, I'm sure you would have no problems creating a second application which you could enter into one of the five categories for 'new' applications  There's no limit on the number of entries from each developer, perhaps it could double your chances of winning a nice shiny new device :)

only to update category, not to others. And you should also state what are the updates compared to preview.

I'm in too, I have 3 months to write a sync client for Owncloud (and probably for any WebDAV too). The intent, in a first step, will be to have an efficient sync client with a minimal UI. I'll develop it first for my N900, but thanks to Qt I will try minimize the porting effort to N9.
The category, of course, will be "Network".

Re: [Announce] Coding competition starts June 11th, we want your application!

tofe: there is already a webdav client for n9/n950 :) which works well with my owncloud install :)

But feel free to create an other one.

I ve applied too, with KhtBMA, a unofficial battle.net mobile authenticator : http://khertan.net/KhtBMA

I'm having a look at the tutorials at the moment. I'll definitely be needing a hand at some point. The program I have in mind is very simple but I'm keeping the idea to myself until I have a vague clue what I'm doing. I really hope I get to enter.

Re: [Announce] Coding competition starts June 11th, we want your application!

@Khertan: if you are talking about MeeDav, I saw this project, but it looks like it only allows you to browse your WebDav files. It doesn't do a local sync (like Dropbox), which is what I would like to do.
If the local sync is already implemented, well, it seems a bit unnecessary to start a new app from scratch; in that case I'll simply look for a new app to code :)

Indeed, there isn't any sync. But think of a separated sync folder, as there is probably like me people already syncing folder between computer with a volume larger than the memory size of an n9. My synced folder size is greater than 200Go :)

Oh, yes, sure I do. Syncing between one folder on local side and one folder on server side has to be there. And it will :)

I'm glad to hear that my project is still a need ! :p

I am not sure about the new apps yet. But I have couple of ideas for small apps in my mind. All depends on how much free time for MeeGo apps development I'll have this summer.

The updates will be related to my open source project location2sms :) Recently (19 May and on 19-20 June) I launched couple of updates for MeeGo Harmattan devices and Symbian at Nokia Ovi Store. The update includes:
- Button for sharing location via e-mail
- Shorten URL of Google Maps (using is.gd) included to the SMS/e-mail content

Now I am working on support on multiple map engines. Soon Bing, Nokia and OpenStreet Maps will be added. I will fix screen rotation issue for MeeGo Harmattan devices. I have in mind features like save map image, save location info and panic features which could be added later. I also consider porting location2sms to Windows Phone, Android, Tizen and iOS (eventually BlackBerry 10).

You can watch a short video about location2sms version 2.1.3 at YouTube.

Thanks to several contributions location2sms is localized for several languages: English, Bulgarian, Turkish, German and Romanian. I am always looking forward to support new languages so I'll be grateful if someone of you can help me translate the app to Russian, Spanish, Portuguese or any other language :)

So far from location2sms has more that 73 000 downloads for Nokia Store :)

I'm in. Added myself to the wiki page.

Re: [Announce] Coding competition starts June 11th, we want your application!

Hi folks, doesn't 3 months fly by! Just an update to remind you all that this weekend (Sunday, midnight UTC) is the last date for submission to the coding competition! Yes really! So if you're working on something, please remember to get it built and submitted in time :)

At the moment we have the following registered participants and submitted applications:

Desktop, System, and Utilities: 24 (7)
Games, Graphics, and Multimedia: 27 (5)
Location & Navigation: 7 (0)
Network & Communications: 19 (4)
Other: 13 (3)
Updates on existing apps: 15 (6)

So we have 105 registered applications on the wiki page, but only 25 submitted entries so far. Remember your application entry must also be submitted! We have 14 N950s and 11 N9s to give away so it's definitely worth entering

In addition to the device prizes, we have just under Eur 700 collected from community donations we'll share out to those who just missed out on winning a device.

It's really easy to enter your application, simply take a look over the wiki to make sure everything seems eligible and enter via the submission page. (Details on how to enter are here)

Also, if you've seen any applications recently announced that you like please remind them to take part. We want to make sure everyone gets a chance to be recognised and maybe win a prize too

Thank you, it's nice to know your work is appreciated (my app is meeBay fyi), for me it was much less than 3 months because I work fulltime, hopefully I am able to complete my app an give people a full ebay experience which includes my ebay functionality.

Is there a Wishlist wiki page? It could be easier to read to pick an idea to work on, than 7 forum pages.

This is a 2012 competition thread, not 2013. You are not expected to put anything into beginners category for a competition that already finished. Thread title is misleading — sorry! :)

When such competitions exist, usually people are expected to submit entries that are developed during the time. Everything that was already ready before falled into "Updates" category, if I recall correctly. So, if it's ready, congratulations — and if not, go ahead and make it.

Re: [Announce] Coding competition starts June 11th, we want your application!

Yep sorry king Ralphred, as gryllida mentions ^^ this thread is related to the 2012 competition which has already finished. I'll report the first post and ask for a subtle thread title change so it won't confuse anyone in the future.

Im not aware of any plans for a 2013 one as yet, though it might be best for the current community elections to be finished first before making plans. If there's enough interest in having one, Im sure there will be one :)
