If so, why not pay whatever to get a real Android device? There are literally hundreds to choose from, at all sort of form factors, price points and feature sets, available right now.

Because the n9 ux is better? All that's lacking is some important applications, also this is old news, they said MeeGo not harmattan

Never mind they said its for harmattan too

Could be real cool, not sure how this would work if the App is not designed ground up for N9, buttons and resolution considered.

Wont matter, there will be buttons on the screen as shown in the video.

Also our devices resolution isn't a random one, other android devices have the same resolution, meaning that the apps will easily scale :)

When somebody downloads he same app on different devices, it still looks fine without user modifications.

Vapourware, just like the other claims, until released.

not really vapour ware since its been demoed, but I just have a feeling there's going to be too much legal ******** for it to be released.

"OpenMobile's ACL is designed for both OEMs and consumers."

That's what they state on there website, I probably shouldn't of posted that and given false hope

Please explain further, what will these guys be doing to achieve this? Porting all apps one by one? Or use some sort of an Emulator?

You can learn more about Openmobile's ACL here: http://www.meegoexperts.com/2011/09/...id-apps-meego/

I have been wanting this option for the longest time, but I respect purists who don't want it. It would dramatically enhance the N9's capabilities.

I don't see the light on this ACL idea...just to imagin of who will let us have all for free...i guess the developer might try it, but big tech imperialist's will shot developer instantly...dosn't it.
Maybe porting symbian belle and java kind of would have ben good idea...isn't it.

Why can't Nokia just Port all Symbian Apps to N9/N900, shouldn't be difficult...??

Buy an Android instead if you want the apps and games. You won't get this for your n9s.

There are efforts to port apps into Harmattan, including a current one offering developers a N9 or N950 reward once they publish an app from another OS to the N9's OVI store. But from the sound of things, it is not an easy process, so a mass port of Symbian apps is probably not in the cards.

Openmobile's ACL, OTOH, would transform the N9's app experience overnight. Plus, many 3rd party developers only code for iOS and Android. Also, the newest and most feature rich versions of apps go to Android and iOS first, frequently leaving us with outdated versions, if we are lucky enough to get anything at all.

This can definitely be done--look at how well the Nitroid for Meego effort is going. If/when the ACL makes it to the N9, we will, without question, have the strongest app platform that Nokia has ever produced. And that can only be good news, IMHO. But if it's not your kind of thing, just don't download it. No harm done.

Sweden lost to England yesterday...but now I have new hopes for ACL on my N9 instead! It's good that we're letting them now how much we would love to have ACL on N9.

I hope everyone posts something in the thread at their web page or send them an email. Let's keep the dream alive.

Given the software demos of the ACL working and Openmobile's statements regarding active development of an N9 solution, what is the basis of the pessimism? We've been waiting on this for some time, but the news has never been better.

They demoed hardware accelerated flash 11 on the N900 first, before any droid device.

They demoed alien dalvik on the N900 first.

They demoed sygic aurora on the N900 first.

I am sure ACL will be along any minute now.

Re: Excellents News for every Nokia N9 owner :D

The idea of ACL strengthens the Android ecosystem and weakens the native harmattan ecosystem (because people may no longer develop things that are already available via ACL). I see no benefit. There is a reason why I don't use my Android phone....

If I wanted crappy Android apps on my phone I have bought a damn Android device instead. If it even works it will be slow and eating CPU because android is bloated.. Then people will cry about "how bad HW N9 has"

So no this is not "excellent news"

Excelent news is when we get Qt5 from the FOSS community. And hopefully a last update PR1.3 from Nokia.

Please move this thread to Android fanboys subforum.

If I go to the android market on a device with a 800*600 screen, and download angry birds, it will work and will be properly scaled.

If I then go and buy angry birds in the android market on a device with a 1280*720 screen, it will be scaled properly.

The developers of android apps knows that there are MANY different resolutions using Android, therfore they program the apps to support all the known Android resolutions.

The N9's resolution is going to be one of the many supported android resoltuions meaning the apps will scale correctly.

TBH developers would benefit from this as they would get a few thousand more people buying their apps! Its not like we will be able to go and buy paid apps for free. We will just have access to the Android/Amazon Market and will be able to download and install free apps, as well as purchase the paid ones.

Meaing Google will also get money from app sales, so no real reason for them to hate, also theres no legality issues as Android is mostly open sourced, meaning legally this can work.

As for porting Symbian, nobody wants an OS that has been designed for buttons and then just messed with for touch support on our N9's... Also Symbian apps are not the focus for developers so we would ONLY get the old apps, and none of the new games/streaming services/social apps.

This will (if it happens) make our N9's pretty much the perfect device as App's is probably the largest area the N9 is lacking.

Things like Instagram, a DECENT Facebook and Twitter app, updated Firefox with the UI or even Chrome Browser, BBC iPlayer ect..

Our ecosystem is dying anyways, many apps will not be ported to the N9 as theres no commercial viability in developing apps for us! So this will give our N9's the ability to last until they break, as wtithout this, in about a year there won't be any new apps for this device and people will move onto another device. This ACL means we will have the latest apps and we can carry on enjoying our beautiful UI of the N9 for much longer!

But this doesnt run a virtual machine so no, the CPU WONT be overloaded, it just runs a compatability layer, that then alows the apps to run, theres none of the Android system running on our devices!

Also your points are stupid, having Android apps is not a bad thing, The harmattan app system is already dying as theres no commercial viability in producing apps for it.

Yes majority of apps in Android are just as useless as majority of apps on iOS and most platforms, but there are a few that are VERY useful that will never make their way to Harmattan...

So stop your Android hating mentality as its not relevant here at all, we aren't talking about running android in the background, its just a compatabiity layer. Devices with our N9's hardware managed to run Android apps perfectly fine!

I understand its your opinion, but if you don't want to use ACL then don't, nobody is saying that you HAVE to use it.. You don't need to post about a topic if your not interested in it, go and post something more useful on a thread you actually care about..

you're missing the point. Once something like ACL becomes available, it will affect all of us, even if we (our some of us) don't instal it. It will affect us because, as I wrote above, it will weaken our own ecosystem even further. If you want Android applications and don't mind the firm google grip, get an Android phone. I don't use one because I want to keep away from google. I chose the n9/n900 knowing that they'd have less developer support... but they were free. Buying and using them is a statement against a world of apples and googles. There's no point in letting google in through the backdoor now.

qwazix 2012-06-16 11:17

Re: Excellents News for every Nokia N9 owner :D

It will also remove incentive from developers to try new things. I for one prefer to code for the N9 as I know my efforts will be appreciated. Once there are a million apps, the excitement about new apps will vanish.

On the other hand the user inside me wants ACL more than the developer doesn't so I say bring it on. (I would trade it any day though for a Fremantle compatibility layer, possibility to install anything from maemo extras - I think extras has more valuable apps than the android market)

ps. I like how the N9 dictionary contains the Maemo distribution names :)

Because there's a torrent of quality Harmattan apps being released daily that will simply dry up with ACL???!
Be realistic, the only people making Harmattan apps now are the people on this forum, and we're not going to go all Android any time soon. Any commercial / mainstream app development has totally gone, and with good reason.
People making generic Qt apps are most likely going to meander off in a BB10-wards direction, and, oh look, they've already got an Android compatibility layer!

Re: Excellents News for every Nokia N9 owner :D

the reason people are skeptical is because dalvik is just a modified version of java, and java runs in a virtual machine.

You can just download and install the .apk directly. No Google there. But I agree native apps would still be the reference. :)

I see no reason for this renewed optimism with ACL. DO you know how long ACL has been talking about porting to Harmattan? About as long as the N9 exists. Maybe they will be another Alien Dalvik, Peregrine or eBuddy.

It is bad cause it hurt QT. But you dont care about that, However I do care. I want more native Qt Apps! Thats the difference! f those people ported some apps to harmattan instead of this ridicilous project that NEVER will integrate well on Maemo6.
