You are right, the picture is not that great.

I watched a TED talk on YouTube a few months ago about the very same subject. It was quite interesting, they did a survey and asked people their opinion on comparing the status of this or that say 30 years ago and now. On pretty much every subject (powerty, health, education...) the surveys showed consistently that people always thought things got worse. But the objective figures showed the exact opposite. It just goes to show that perceptions can be deceptive.

That is becouse the ones that was asked are black holes. Consuming. More, bigger, faster.

Someone has to. Imagine going through life singing "Everything is awesome" all the time. What a nightmare.

Seriously, though, in terms of objective, measurable factors like public health or wealth distribution, the world has definitely moved forwards.

But there are other measures. Just yesterday, I heard on the radio about a study some guy whose name escaped me did in the US. He measured several things, of which I remember only one: counting how many drivers stopped at a STOP sign at an intersection. He did the count over a few weeks and logged it. Then came back a year later and repeated the experiment. He kept it for 15 years and the results are quite astonishing: people's consideration towards other people is in a steady decline. (I'd like to repeat that this was one of many experiments, he did not draw the conclusion from just one STOP sign.)

You may dismiss it as a hearsay and you would be right. I cannot provide a reference, do not have a name or any other details. All I have is, "I think I heard this somewhere". But my personal experience is pretty consistent with that study, even though I do not have any log of objective numbers to support me.
