I would apply the same to any "anti-terror" legislation.

The "effective cost" of any given threat is the potential cost when the threat becomes reality multiplied by the chance of it happening.

The potential cost of being a terror victim is high. You could be killed or seriously injured. We can give it a score of 1 (on the scale from 0 to 1). But the chance of that happening is quite low, in parts per million. Let's be generous and give it 1 in 100,000, i.e. 0.00001. Multiply the two and you get 0.00001.

The potential cost of the impact of any "anti-terror" legislation (say, the "Patriot Act") is hard to quantify as it depends greatly on everyone's personal circumstances. If you run Wikileaks or are a member of Greenpeace then presumably the cost is higher than if you work as a lollipop lady. But everyone is impacted to some extent and we can assume an average score. Let's say one ten-thousandth of the cost of being killed, i.e. 0.0001. But the chance of that happening is a certainty, i.e. 1. Multiply the two and you get 0.0001, which is ten times higher than the "effective cost" of being a terror victim.

These figures are of course hugely inaccurate and, in any case, assume only averages. The chance of being caught up in a terror attack is much greater to for example airport security staff or even frequent travellers. But I hope you get the idea.

So what can the government do to push through any personal freedom restricting legislation? Quite a lot, it turns out. They can hugely exaggerate the danger of being a terror victim. Easy to do, just make sure any incident is reported extensively. Media are willing, albeit usually unwitting collaborators in that effort ("bad news sell"). What else? They can play down both the potential cost of surveillance ("if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear") and the chance of it happening ("it is targeting the bad guys, not you"). It is up to us to see through that BS.

Right is good, the future is good, bureaucrats are good.

Remove rights, future and bureaucrats and we are in a dangerous place.

Brazil?

I have never understood the reasoning behind why no thanks button in Off-topics. And I fear we will never find out.

Skeletoners must be the most brave or crazy(or both) in the olympics. How do anyone even thinking of trying it in the first place. No breaks :D

There once was a skeleton of doom,
Who invited a ghost to his room,
They had a big fight,
Which wasn't right,
Of who should be frightened of whom!

Finally, olympics are gone and the MWC can begin. Expect some quality devices!

4 hours and like 8 minutes until we reach galaxy 9. Be ready, the bees knees.

Not sure I really want a s9. But the choices are very limited. But who am I to say no to a galaxy s9. So maybe...

S9 Plus looks pretty nice. Might wait for the new Note as I miss the pen. Depends on how the Purism phone is coming along. For now, although CIA, FBI and NSA do not appove, having fun with Mate 10!

Man, use the 2nd and announce your right to use it. A cyber gun!

Jolla won’t provide anything really useful so unfortunately I have to buy another I phone or Galaxy soon. Waited too long...and for what? :D

Not even that duel screen device has entered my domain :(

This is just getting silly. Like in 1999/2000, when everybody was cramming cameras into their phones. I could see the attraction of a phone integrated with a camera but could never understand why nobody looked at a more obvious and definitely more useful integration - a phone with a PDA. I had to wait another 4 years for that.

Here the more obvious and useful improvement would be a real keyboard rather than another lens.

Just want to report I just broken my first phone ever.(more than 35 devices) I have cracked my screen (badly)...of my iPhone today, dropping it from my pocket twice.

Will probobly be forced to go Samsung if no highend phones appears before next week.

...or go back to xperia x, n9, n900 jPhone 1 or something else from 2017.

Time has come for my first device 2018! Whooshing!

Re: It's the final countdown!

Sorry to hear that Dave....

Until something decent comes along...
go back to the n900...
at least you won't get a horrible taste in your mouth from having to deal with an inferior or problematic device...
Or feel like you are "settling" for something...rather than enjoyably embracing it.

Why would a phone without a browser or email need a 4G?
And why 1GB RAM? Old phones with a few KB could achieve the same thing!

Cheer up! Is that an issue somehow? Maybe it’s cheaper to get a 1 GB that is already created and built than ordering a special order and trying to squeeze in memory from 1992 :)

To me it’s a far bigger issue that we have on evidence of alien existence.

Re: It's the final countdown!

"Cheaper"? They ask a bloody $250 for the damn thing. What for? A device with the same capabilities can be bought from any supermarket for $15.

I have a sneaky suspicion that it is an Android phone in disguise.
