One-Way Mars Colony Project Draws 200,000 Volunteers

http://i.space.com/images/i/000/025/...jpg?1358923242

A group that's looking for the first Red Planet colonists received applications from more than 200,000 prospective astronauts vying for a spot on a one-way trip to Mars.

The non-profit Mars One Foundation hopes to send teams of four spaceflyers on one-way missions to Mars starting in 2023. Its initial 19-week application window closed on Aug. 31, with a final tally of 202,586 volunteers.

The only requirement to apply was to be over age 18. Those selected to move on to the next round will be notified by the end of this year. Over the next two years, a selection committee will narrow down that pool to up to 40 candidates, who will then begin seven years of astronaut training. A public vote will determine which four will be the first to go to Mars, never to return.

The applicant pool is quite diverse with more than 140 countries represented, Mars One said in a statement. Nearly a quarter of the aspiring Martian settlers are from the United States. Ten percent of the applicants are Indians, the second largest group in the pool.

Mars One, based in the Netherlands, will face some major technical and funding challenges in the years ahead. It has not yet picked a spacecraft or rocket for the long voyage. The project also estimated it will cost about $6 billion to send its first crew to the Red Planet and $4 billion for each of the following missions.

The group started raising money through its application fees, which ranged from $5 to $75 depending on the applicant's country of origin. Mars One also hopes it will be able to raise funds with a reality TV show tracking the astronaut selection process and training.

Martian hopefuls who missed the deadline or were too young to apply this time around will have future chances to be considered. Mars One says it will start regular recruitment programs as the search for future Red Planet crews continues.

I'm not. Would be really cool to hang out on Mars. I would never give up what I have here on earth. Maybe in many years when I'm 70 yeas old. ATM I'm preparing a Battle with the UFO's. They will attack any day now!

There are cheats, use Google, but you're a loser, you play by cheats, if you are a MAN enough, you would play the whole game without cheats, I reached 49% and without cheats at all

Don't have time to play, not even with codes. Great graphics though. I have some old GTA lll on my phone. The progress from that is nice.

What I've heard it is a pretty violent game, and at least in Finland it's rated 18+ which means, you have to be that age to play it.
Don't know about Lebanon, though... could be our violence standards are a bit different.

On another note, yes now it is proven that video games cause violence; when GTA V came out people were fighting for it in the quoeue and many people got hurt around the world, also in Finland.
And in England one bloke was stabbed almost lethally gecause of the game. :(

Could you provide links to the scientific studies that show this proof, please? Whilst I am aware that some (few) demonstrate a link between aggression and violent video games, one needs to remember that correlation is not the same as causation.

Re: It's the final countdown!

True. I find it highly likely that the people queuing to get GTA were already a biased selection sliced off the far right end of the gaussian distribution for violent tendencies :)

I will give it away soon enough, together with that Playstation. I'm not so much into gaming but I like to test games to see the graphics improvements. Will be intressting to see if Playstation 4 Can take it to next level.

The game is very violent. But Im looking at the graphic and the cool cars. So it's fine...

I do know it's 18+ but in Lebanon they can give porn to 5 year olds.
And Akkumaru, how? The graphics are way better than any other game till now. Sure, there are some glitches and texture problems but rarely, look at the countryside, and IMO, Trevor is the most HD-looking character in the game

P.S I finished it today morning..

Akkumaru 2013-09-22 10:29

oh my AMD you sure are dedicated to the game :p and I think it doesn't have amazing graphics because I am used to playing on 'ultra' + mods :p if you don't know what those are, well, it's exclusive to PC gamers :p Take crysis 3 or Skyrim + mods. God they're beautiful. Damn rockstar release the game on PC! Then I'll mod it to make it have 'amazing' graphics!

Actually I do have a laptop for gaming (NVIDIA GeFore GTX 560), I do play Crisis 3, it's similar to Far Cry 3's environment tho.. Well, but I am saying it's amazing according to a huge game like GTA which does not only focus on 1 fact like vehicles/shooting, but it focuses on heists, peds, vehicles, weapons, environments, several weather conditions, a huge map, free play, planes, parachutes, blimps, helicopters, boats, submarines...etc. so it's pretty normal to have -not- perfect graphics. And according to GTA IV, there is a HUGE improvement in graphics and now the game feels much more alive!

Ofcourse, GTA 5 is an outstanding improvement from GTA 4. I am really liking the system where you can change characters ;) Also, what you said is pretty much true, it's an amazing sandbox. Know what else is a better sandbox? MINECRAFT! XD

Yes, Minecraft, with the gun mod and LB realism texture pack, oh the good days..

I once built an MEA Airplane with that game, a full realistic one, with the mod that makes you actually steer and fly it.

Besides OpenCiv, name a good, opensource (from day one) game with astonishing graphics and a sizable following where I can kill hookers and rob banks... saying this out of curiosity.
