How come there's no leaked talks or screenshots this time around? Like with the Legendary PR1.2? Weird

My guess for the surprise is stock FM radio client. I just hope they make everything a little bit faster (especially the browser). It would also be nice to be able to change the browser user agent from some menu setting. Then all I need is something akin to Google Sky Map and I'm all set for the next 3-5 years to come..

How come?

Why should anyone be blamed because an unofficial source might have been wrong about something?

Re: N9 PR1.3 by end of May'12

I now see why so many people are so angry at Elop for abandoning Meego. I just got my N9 3 days ago and the OS is wonderful. Could use some polish here and there and features that add some user friendliness (ie. email client select all/ gmail threads) but I now see the vast potential of this OS and it is sad that it has been abandoned.

Please excuse me if this is a stupid question but is the OS and drivers for the N9 open sourced? Meaning some company could take over the development of the OS.

Re: N9 PR1.3 by end of May'12

No, not open sourced :(

MeeGo is opnesourced, meego-harmattan isn't.

Its actually sad. My friends love my phone but because its Nokia they dont want to take a risk of getting one.

Because I came from the n900 to the n9 it was easy for me to mess around and get wazzap and other stuff i wanted through this site... So even if they wanted this phone it would be hard to recommend to THEM. There's alot that needs to be worked on and if they cant get the popular applications i know they'll end up frustrated...

i totally agree on the friends love the n9 part. they are coming from all other platforms and at least 2/3s of them said they would get one if it was still supported. once they've used the swipe ui, nobody even asks about specs and ghzs.
my girlfriend said yesterday, that she intuitively swipes around on every other touchscreen device. and she has been using my n9 for 2 hours in total maybe in the last 6 months.
nokia you are such ******s for not supporting this great phone.

sorry for OT

Re: N9 PR1.3 by end of May'12

Meego actually has very few to do with Harmattan and the N9.
Harmattan is supported (a little) by nokia folks (ie not any more in the Tizen/Meego project)

didnt nokia state/promise that they would support the n9 "for years"?

just got my phone a couple days ago and its so much better than my last phone (htc amaze). even with the downgraded specs. a few updates/polishes would make this phone perfect.

Did you upgrade your Amaze to ICS or were you only running Gingerbread? I thought that the Amaze was a little better than the Sensation, but both are "clunky" compared to the N9.

I was hanging on to my Sensation (the Amaze is gone) in case ICS made it suck significantly less. However, I was enjoying the WiFi tethering on the Sensation on T-Mobile. ICS breaks the free tether so I'm debating to update and see how it is or just ebay it now.

And yes, agreed, a few updates/polishes would make the N9 perfect.

Problem is nokia doesnt want to have a perfect n9 because the board i a bunch of idiots. PR 1.3 is the last. Harmattan team has left the building. And my guess is also that 808 is last symbian device.

before i sold my amaze i promised i would try ICS before hand. i S-OFF'ed it and installed the ICS leak and i still didnt care for it. i just got tired of android un-stableness and the fragmentation. ive had sooo many android phones (mostly HTC), since the G1 days, and 1 WP7. ive had quite a few of the androids with dual cores and 1gb of ram and none of them ran as smooth as my n9 :D
i had the sensation right before my amaze but i had screen issues and i hated how it always had low RAM, then i bought the amaze from someone on XDA and loved it for about a month then started hating it cause its so heavy and bulky lol, and the lcd panel made blacks look so crappy. the N9 is actually the first phone ive had with a amoled and im loving it, besides the blotches of "ink" (thats what it looks like) when looking at the screen in the dark.

didnt mean to take that off topic but yeah :P im very happy with my N9, much more than i thought. i also feel cool to be one of few in missouri with it, ive actually never seen a Nokia smartphone in my life besides my N9. they are pretty rare in the US, until the lumia series gets even bigger

1.3 is seriously the last? im really hoping not.. this phone has a lot of potential, and nokia knows that. it has sold more than the lumia series. i guess microsoft has gotton too far up their *** or something. even though i like microsoft i hate to see nokia drop everything else for it.. pretty lame

Re: N9 PR1.3 by end of May'12

I'm hoping 1.3 won't be the last. This phone has so much potential. After using it for 1 week I can see why everyone here is so angry at Nokia for abandoning Meego Harmattan.

I came back to Nokia on the Lumia 900 and was impressed with the hardware that I decided to buy a Nokia N9. Now I own 2, one black n9 and one white n9 and the lumia 900. I've since switched to using the white n9 exclusively and in the process of learning how to use QT and QML so I can create apps I'm missing.

Why can't Nokia just do 3 operating systems? Sure the updates might be slower due to reducing the programming team, but at least give the customers options on what they like. Most likely Microsoft just gave them a bunch of money to guarantee that they only develop for Windows.

mikecomputing 2012-05-27 09:07

Re: N9 PR1.3 by end of May'12

Ofcourse I dont have inside info. But everything point PR 1.3 will be last. Except maybe some security update etc.

BUT this does not mean N9 is dead. I am sure we will see more apps from FOSS and CSSU.

but in nokias case everything seems to point to EOL..

reason I beleive this is:

git logs i harmattan core componentz nothing new since mars
nokia has removed n9 from many homepages
price drop, this is good for enduser cause you get a GREAT device very lowprice, soo go get one before to late:)

and dont forget n9 will be alive without Elop and his Microsoft fanboys.

My very very very big guess for the surprise is :

- THE FIX of the INFAMOUS 'tracker' BUG that render the device unusable (randomly appear without any logic reason, clearing contacts, messages, gallery, music, videos ...).

Obviously, another fix for the mail client 'fenix' (this client is a joke, never see something more unusable) :

- It always pop up the message 'The program fenix is unresponsive, would you like to kill it yes/no ?' between every message/folder changing.

- Searching a message start after every character typed, taking ages to reply some results when using IMAP with many messages (in this case I think it's better to leave the user entering the full string he want to search, then just push on a 'start search' button to avoid the actual behaviour).

- The anniversary dates reminder (no need to details here, every one can see by himself how the implementation is lame, even a re****ed men can do better ...).

There is many others, but I don't want to rewrite the kilometers of report all users made on the bugtracker.

I wait and pray like all of others N9 owners ...

A++

Would be nice if they fixed the multiple contacts bug - theres NO way of automatically merging contacts - if you use mail for exchange and have contacts on your phone, all contacts are doubled up and no fix.

Re: N9 PR1.3 by end of May'12

Bit OT, I was wondering is there any way to getting the solutions for "fixed" - status, bugs before next update?

For example:
- idle
- accuweather

Many of them I thing would be easy to fix, and who knows when the update is comming.

Re: N9 PR1.3 by end of May'12

I just want the cellular connectivity freeze bug to be fixed.

I have actually no other choice to use another phone because I actually got smoked after I missed several phone calls from my boss.

Performance improvements would be nice too. It sometimes take up to 10 seconds to show up an email accessed from the lockscreen.
